Comments:I don't have the time or the brainpower to get to grips with how immense UDMF is as a format so I went for simplicity instead. Enjoy this super hip techbase (squarebase?) as you ponder, why is it so hip to be square?

I'm having trouble getting GZDoom Builder to load the Square "IWAD". I've downloaded the .cfgs in the devkit, but my only option seems to be to add square1.pk3 from the 2.1 official release under Square (ZDoom). But it gives an error saying it can't load the resources from the .pk3, so I don't have any textures or actors or anything. What am I missing here?

Are you getting this error when you’re attempting to open up new levels, or when you’re trying to test them?

Build Time: 10 hours (plus lots of time afterwards for tiny fixes)

A wee bit rushed in places, might still have bugs and balance issues aplenty. Please play and comment!

 

v2 Changelog:

 

  • Fixed the super obvious z-fighting on dam in first area that appeared in GL.
  • Made dam explosion sequence slightly more dramatic and added in Square dialogue!
  • Added a custom texture for the switch that triggers the explosion.
  • Some enemy and item adjustment. (No difficulties yet still.)
  • Added a sector fade to underwater sections.
  • Increased waterfall speeds.
  • Random texture alignment fixes.
  • Corrected swimming sign alignment.
  • Adjusted various sector heights to make platforming a little easier.
  • Made the north circool-aid a secret.
  • Addressed the sector color bleeding in the eastern area. Might still need work?
  • Added a ton of seaweed/coral and grass tuft decorations.
  • Whole map is a tad brighter.
  • Automap cleaned up.
  • There's an ultra-secret now.

Comments: Probably the most stupid and random idea I ever had for a map. I wanted to add more rooms and stuff but I wasted too much time so I made something short instead.

Btw the Doom Builder config is missing the default texture sets, which you can enabled with this:

Comments: Finally I made a map for my own game. If this doesn't get in the first map slot then my crops will surely die.

 

DUWNLODE: ba-sqCustardv5.wad

 

EDIT: It wasn't custardy enough, so I changed the grass into cheese and water into buttermilk. Fixed some texture misalignments too.

EDIT the 2nd: v3 has improved ammo balance, item placement and fixes a couple minor texturing errors.

EDIT Part III: I reached out to the original voice of Square (I know them as me) and they agreed to record a custom voiceline just for my map! Whoaaaa!!! (If you ask, I'm sure they'll be happy to do the same for you)

EDIT 4 Modern Warsquare: Fixed a missing texture, misalignments and changed some enemy placements, ammo balance, and a switch.

Posted an update to my map above. I've been finding so many tiny fixes to make and have spent a crazy amount of time on those, way more than 10 hoursHopefully the extent of the fixes is still in the spirit of these being speedmaps!

 

I streamed all the maps so far last night! There's some fabulous stuff in this set. I offered a little bit of critical feedback for a few of the submissions and hopefully this is helpful to all the mappers. Apologies if the feedback seems a tad harsh or negative, I was a little tired while doing this, but overall I really thoroughly enjoyed myself. There's nothing here I disliked!

I realised while I was making my map that it might be a good idea for me, as one of the devs, to package up and release a bunch of the textures from the game that were pruned from the final release to keep filesize down. As a result of this pruning, there's a few annoying gaps present in the current texture roster of square1.pk3, so I've put together a PK3 that fills those in. Simply load this as a resource alongside square1.pk3!

Map Name: Manifold Square Garden
Author: Peccatum Mihzamiz
Music: E2A6 (from Adventures of Square)
Sky: PMSKY7, a custom sky I made combining two skies from Adventures of Square, plus some work of my own.
Difficulty Settings: Yes. Also added a lot of co-op stuff as usual :). I didn't balance a lot for difficulties 2 and 5 because I am not used to working with them.
Build Time: 10 Hours, plus an ungodly amount of bug fixing etc.. I didn't implement several things I wanted to do because I ran out of time.
Known issues: There is a slime trail that shows up on the North Western stairs from time to time, the waterfall doesn't co-operate completely, and I haven't gotten spawning in ammo on map spots to work yet.
Comments: Wow this was fun, and much more difficult than I thought! Learned new things like spawning things, blowing stuff up and sectors moving because of that, etc.

If you're like me and you haven't been keeping up with your calendar then you wouldn't have seen that it's the 29th?

"But Pineapple?", you may ask me, "Weren't maps due the 28th?"

YES!! They were! But I haven't finished mine. So uh... you know the drill...

 

As far as excuses go, I turned 21 on the 27th, so I didn't have the motor functions to work on my map. I do have only 2 hours left on the clock, so I'm estimating that my submission will be live sometime in the next 12 hours. Until the clock strikes... er... 31? any of you's who still wanna have a map in this set are free to crank out a map as quickly as possible. The 10 hour limit is a maximum. I'll take your 1 hour maps if you give em to me. (and if they're beatable).

 

YOU HEARD IT FOLKS. SUBMISSIONS WILL BE DUE BY 11:59 PM EST. THE OP OF THIS THREAD WILL BE REMADE ON THE 30th TO INCLUDE THE FIRST RELEASE OF SPEED SQUARED. And after that, we'll be hitting Warp 6 baby!

Speed Squared - RC1 pk3

 

Unceremonious, I know, but I have a few other things I need to tend to before the big release with all of the cool fireworks. I'm posting the wad a few hours early so that any minor bugs can be caught before I spend a few hours creating the release thread that'll take this post's place... in a few hours (maybe days, we'll see if I get busy).

 

You'll need to load this pk3 with the square1 pk3 as well as the extended texture pack posted above.


Please let me know if you have any issues/feedback with this version before the fancy release later!

Anyone downloading this for play, be aware that 1. Map 6 (E1A6) cycles back on itself currently. and 2. Music is missing from "Spillwedges". We've caught these already. Hope y'all enjoy! This was a blast!
