Nihlith Posted May 6, 2021 (edited) There was a wad I downloaded that had experience points and money where the player started in this space age base with a choice of maps to go to and you would get rewarded back at base once you completed your missions and new maps would open. I can't remember what it was called but it was very intricate and I thought it was hard. Of course there's always Daggerfall. I hear it's on steam. I could also mention 2D RPGs such as the old Ultima series or, in a different genre, the Elite/Frontier series. Even some games from the 70s could be classed as open world, such as Colossal Cave Adventure and the original Zork.
