LateToDOOM2020 Posted May 29, 2021 So I just installed DOOM1 and 2 setup on DOS BOX as well as GZDoom on a new computer but there seems to be an odd issue on both ports. When I try to run and turn at the same time I end up running forward and not turning.. making it impossible to play. Has anyone had this issue before? It makes it not playable and I don't know what causes this but many people have played doom so I'm sure someone has had this issue. Turn left uses my left arrow Turn right uses my right arrow Move forward uses my forward arrow Shift is set to run Does anything seem wrong with this? Thanks to anyone in advance. 1 Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted May 29, 2021 I stopped using the arrows when I got GZDoom but I never had that problem on my DOSBox emu 1 Share this post Link to post
Archvile Hunter Posted May 29, 2021 It's a typical issue with cheap keyboards not being able to handle certain combinations of simultaneous keypresses. Try holding down both SHIFT keys simultaneously and typing out: "THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG". A high-end keyboard will have no issues typing out every single letter, while a cheaper keyboard might miss several keystrokes. You will either need to find a keymapping that prevents jamming, or obtain a good mechanical keyboard to avoid this problem. Additionally, I would recommend using a mouse to look around rather than the arrow keys; it is much more comfortable to play with a mouse than with clunky tank controls. 4 Share this post Link to post
idbeholdME Posted May 29, 2021 (edited) Yep. As explained above, basic cheap "office" keyboards will beep at you when trying to strafe run to the left using the default mapping. Basically, the keyboard can't process all the inputs due to too many active keys on the same line of the underlying keyboard matrix. Doom was the reason I got a mechanical keyboard. ZeroTheEro Posted May 29, 2021 I had an Armageddon keyboard that had ghosting issues when I was straferunning the old way, and it stopped happening once I changed keyboards. 1 Share this post Link to post
Pseudonaut Posted May 29, 2021 Looks like your options are to get a new keyboard or, even better, start using a mouse. If you're concerned that the latter is "not legit": 4 Share this post Link to post
roadworx Posted May 30, 2021 every time someone thinks doom is meant to be played keyboard-only, romero cries 2 Share this post Link to post
1Destro3456 Posted May 30, 2021 If you don't want another keyboard use the mouse, it's easier, it's less expensive (assuming you already have a mouse), Doom was always meant to play with mouse, it's just that people back then didn't use it, not sure why though 0 Share this post Link to post
BeefGee Posted May 30, 2021 so first of all, I agree with everyone else. It's most likely your keyboard not accepting certain combinations of inputs. Try it with another keyboard and see how you go (or just use the mouse). 9 hours ago, 1Destro3456 said: If you don't want another keyboard use the mouse, it's easier, it's less expensive (assuming you already have a mouse), Doom was always meant to play with mouse, it's just that people back then didn't use it, not sure why though why was keyboard only so popular? well the main reasons: (1) computer mice weren't actually ubiquitous back then, a LOT of PCs didn't have them, (2) a mouse was relatively expensive and only the most expensive didn't suck (remember track balls?), and (3) a lot of PC games (most?) were keyboard controls only at that point, so inertia played a part as well I'm talking about PCs that ran DOS here (which is what Doom was built for). This was pre-Windows 95, the OS which became the true precursor to modern PCs. 1 Share this post Link to post

You can just leave your hands in place and play instead of having to constantly move your mouse hand. I also find the mouse pretty pointless without freelook, which sprite based games are absolutely unsuited for. But to each their own. Nevertheless, telling someone asking about a keyboard control problem to just use a mouse is not really helpful. It's a perfectly valid control scheme and I've been playing that way for many years. 2 Share this post Link to post
LateToDOOM2020 Posted May 30, 2021 (edited) Well that is some sad News I was thinking it would be some weird configuration issues. I Try to avoid the mouse because I have a laptop setup and the keyboard is already here in front of me but I guess if the keyboard is not working then A mouse or a better keyboard may be the solution anyways. EDIT: Now I have noticed this issue with another game... I Ended up needing a cheaper keyboard as funny as it is. Edited May 31, 2021 by LateToDOOM2020 0 Share this post Link to post
LateToDOOM2020 Posted May 31, 2021 I can run backwards while turning left but not run forward turning left. Quite odd And it makes me question if its my keyboard. Just thought Id mention this odd situation. Thanks for all the information and help! I guess Ill set the run to "toggle run" and it should be a fix! 0 Share this post Link to post
