It's a chimera. Two independent file formats together. I had to use JPEG instead of PNG since PNG headers make it incompatible with Doom save game.

(i also had to create save game compatible with doom1.wad and doom2.wad at the same time; one loads E1M9 the other loads MAP30)

I agree; this was, as mentioned earlier, a planned feature for DooM.  This is similar to Wolf 3d's secret level being a Pac Man maze, and the Commander Keen playing Pong.  As I recall, only a few subroutines were made, and it didn't really go anywhere, so it was removed.  Nice touch putting it back in!  :)

Even though this is a bit of useless information, I find it funny that cjxl, in converting the JPEG to a newer format, can recover an exact JPEG including your save game via the corresponding djxl tool. :P

I wish to see LGR cover this on his Blerbs channel.

 

Also, should that Asteroids level in later versions of the Zandronum PWAD Doom Center be also mentioned on the DoomWiki's Automap Asteroids page.

totally missed this thread... this is truly legendary. I really hope Romero tries this doom 2 astroids, since it was apparently already a planned feature that got scrapped
