Whats with the randy being "greasy" thing?

A couple a doomtubers said that randy pitchford is "greasy" which i dont get. 

Even Civvie 11 had a whole skit in one of his duke nukem videos about randy being so greasy. 

 

Whats the deal?

Well, Randy is (was) in charge. A lot, if not all of gearboxes dickmoves are based on randys decisions. And in the end he got blamed for everything, even things he couldn't actually change.

Here's a decent primer on all the bad stuff Randy's done. It's true that he takes the blame for anything Gearbox does that people don't like (not unfairly imo) but he's also generated plenty of controversy all by himself, not the least of which being his (alleged) involvement with child pornography.

Randy Pitchford has a very long and sordid history as an absolute greaseball both in his personal and professional life. There is no low he won't stoop to if it means fattening his bank account. Every single controversy throughout the years that involves GearBox Software has been caused by Pitchford or made worse by his involvement. He has a remarkable ability to take the most scuzziest option possible when it comes to making any business decision, no matter how rudimentary. An absolute nightmare when it comes to PR, it's astonishing he hasn't been ousted by his own company. Pitchford is a perfect example of why the mainstream gaming industry is run by morally-bankrupted fuckwits who blow their noses on $100 bills from their overinflated salaries and wipe their arses with employee complaints that were filed to the Human Resources department. Basically, he really fucking sucks.

 

Jim Sterling made a solid video back in 2019 perfectly outlining Pitchford's downward spiral and history of destructive bullshit if you're curious.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he also quite recently( i.e. a few years ago) refuse to pay Bobby Prince Royalties for his music in DN3D and sued 3D realms with some bogus lawsuit. Did anything actually come out of that, or was there a settlement

im not sure about the thing with bobby prince but if i wasnt mistaken the 3d realms lawsuit was because they started to make another duke nukem game (with would later become bombshell if i am remenbering right) without gear box permission (they sold the duke nukem rights to them when they were making duke forever)

I think it was called Duke Nukem reloaded. According to Wikipedia and Friedrick Shrieber, it was killed by Gearbox due to it being a prettier and better game than DNF ( which isn't saying anything). Another example of Gearbox being shady/scummy.

Apologies, it seems I was thinking of the wrong project. I remember that project became Bombshell( like you said). It's sad that they killed that game and something mediocre came out of it .

to be fair i wouldint expect anything more from it most duke nukem games are kinda meh with the exceptions being duke 1 and 2 and duke 3d

ive seen some people saying Manhattan project is good but i think the originals were a lot better

There is literally nothing to be said about the guy as a person himself; you literally need to rely on facts known about other people (e.g. his offspring) to even have a "Personal life" Wikipedia section. You don't know the guy under the business suit. That's how you know how greasy he is.

Civvies reason is whenever he looked for photos of Randy, he looked physically greasy (as in wet and oily) in all of them. The meme of using it to refer to his shady behaviour spun off from there.

Alleged child pornography. He went to trial for it, but at the end he was exonerated. Look at the Wikipedia article.

Yeah, it's a real shame because Gearbox started up as a really decent developer. I mean, they made Opposing Force, which I think is the best expansion pack ever made. Aside from Brood War. But they also made Brothers in Arms, and I think Borderlands was pretty enjoyable. They really started being shitty after Borderlands, and most of it was Randy Bo-Bandy. He is a greasy piece of gristle, and nobody seems to be able to catch him on anything. Probably because he's too damn greasy.

 

I wouldn't blame the employees themselves, although I'm sure there are a few that are culpable, but it seems like most of the mismanagement started from the top down. Again, they made some really good games, and most of the employees that have complained were the ones making the games. 

 

The ones being accused of grievous actions were/are in management. Under Prickford. The people making the games were or are doing a really good job. I haven't really played a Gearbox game in years, but I assume the people still making the games are still making playable games. It's the people in charge of that company that need to get fired, or worse.

 

And honestly, I wonder if the last time Randy made something for a game, it was working on Half-Life: Opposing Force. And Half-Life is one of the most easily moddable games ever, because it was based on idtech 2. You can do some really fancy things with it, but it's a pretty simple engine.

 

Anyway, yes, he's a greasy POS. Not because he's physically greasy, but he probably is. But because everything he does seems like he's trying to slide out of any culpability for his own actions or decisions.

 

And I wouldn't bare any ill will towards the people who worked on DNF or Aliens: Colonial Marines. They were bad games, but they were just trying to push Randy's bad business decisions out the door. Those games had been stuck in development hell for years, it's not the Gearbox employees fault they sucked. They were told to get them out the door, Randy paid a shitload of money for the licenses. What can you do?
