Lord of all demons

Doom Netflix original series

Recommended Posts

Since I'm on this here forum I want to ask you all this, should they make a Doom Netflix original series, how long should it be, what monsters should be in it, that kind of stuff, I think that would be great

No, if the result is one of these many half assed netflix series.

Probably i'll give a shot if something like Castlevania or The Witcher will come out...

Given Netflix' track record with shows, I probably would not start watching it till both the reviews were good and it had finished the second season and had been renewed for a third - or was a confirmed limited run. Their propensity for cancellations makes me reluctant to committ time to any of their shows.

Thinking some more, I just don't think Doom would work as an ongoing show. It needs to have a defined beginning and end. So a confirmed limited run show, say 12 episodes, could work.

I rather have Hulu do a Doom tv show then Netflix. Netflix is like hollywood, once they touch something they turn it into a pile of pinky shit. Netflix no, Hulu maybe, let hardcore fans of Doom make it themselves, yes.

I think it would be a bad idea, considering nobody's made a decent Doom movie yet, so a series might be as far removed and unrelated to Doom as Doom 2005 is.

I mean Netflix is cool and all and I can see stuff like The Last of Us, a Silent Hill series or even a Metal Gear series potentially

work out well, but I don't find it necessary for Doom. It's not Netflix material to me, unless you just want

more cringe content beside the Doom movies.

Not everything has to be "also on Netflix".

DOOM lore doesn't need to be any more confusing! We already have enough timelines and Netflix will either make things more convoluted or come up with something totally unrelated to the games. Hell to the no! No! NO!!!

Regardless of the company behind it, I have mixed feelings, because I think the idea of a DOOM show animated or otherwise sounds fun, but it would take a rather deft hand to take it and make it something not generic or too self-serious in essence. I think Doom is best handled with a careful level of absurdity to it, not comedic, but something of a genuine embracing of its elements silly or not. However when you are talking about a property that is not intentionally tongue-in-cheek nor has consistently well defined story elements, balancing absurdity and intensity without leaning to deeply into camp is a difficult task. Part of me wants something akin to The Evil Dead and Alien series (which were both partial inspirations for the original game if I have read right, so I think it would be fitting), because to me they have that sort of dynamic between fun and menacing that would let the show thrive. It would have to carry a solid momentum with it without being relentlessly breakneck, be fun and somewhat self-aware without being irony poisoned, and ultimate be in spirit of it more so than relentlessly dedicated to updating it.

I will say, does it NEED a show? No, its one of those things that leans more on gameplay and being an experience than a built world one can dig into, but in that essence nothing NEEDS a show, so I mean, its worth a shot I guess?

It could go the Castlevania route

I wouldn't mind it if it was done well. Don't market it as Doom, market it as something taking inspiration from Doom. When people try to make spin-offs of games or try to novelize it or make it into a movie/show, they think, "This is based on a game, let's make another game," when they really should be thinking, "This is a game, but let's make it into a movie/show"

Some of the best video game stories would not be great movies or shows (SPOILER FOR THESE GAMES)

Batman Arkham City: One of the best games of the century. But let's make it into a movie or show. This guy's the main villain, no this guy is, actually this guy is! Oh, wait, that guy is that guy! It's just too many twists and turns that would make it an utterly boring film.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Another incredible game with an incredible story. But, let's condense that into a movie or show. This guy's the bad guy, he does bad things, he pays for it, and just when he redeems himself, he dies. pretty generic story, a pretty boring show.

God of War: Some of you probably haven't played this, but this is a pretty great game. The main guy is BAD! he killed his family, and now has to take revenge on the person that pushed him forward to do it, but immediately you've lost your audience. The protagonist is just an antagonist in the protagonist's clothes. Even movies about the villain paint him more as an Antagonist that has redeemable qualities. this guy just was a dick and is overreacting like a child, when he should really be trying to get over it by coping with his feelings.

If there were ever a Doom show, it shouldn't be about, "I'm Doomguy, I have to save Earth. That's all you need to know." Make it relatable. Make Doomguy have mental issues, make a love interest for Doomguy. Give Doomguy a name. a show could be pulled off if it were more than just about DOOM.

The weird thing about video game screen adaptations is that often the game in question is already pulling super heavily from a lot of famous films, and it's only by virtue of transposing them to an interactive medium that it can borrow so much and still manage to feel fresh and cohesive. But if you put something like Doom back into a film context, it really just does become Aliens, or Event Horizon, or Evil Dead or whatever.

For my money, the movie Mandy is as good a screen adaptation as we're ever likely to get of what I consider the emotional essence of Doom.

It'd have to be an adaptation of the nuDoom games because they actually fleshed out a grander narrative and lore whereas the older games shirked the very idea of narrative for the most part. This is why I feel the last two film adaptations faltered because they had to fill in so many blanks, which in turn made those films not feel very Doom-y at all. By adapting the nuDoom narrative though, there's always the potential to make something cool. You'd just need to get some talented people behind it. I know the old meme of "lol Netflix adaptation" has been floating around for a while thanks namely to the (apparently) terrible Death Note film from 2017, but Netflix is actually capable of making good things too.

So yeah, I wouldn't completely turn my nose up at the idea. It really depends on the talent behind it, how they adapt it and if it's given a decent budget.

Please no.  You know how people upthread were worrying about Netflix coming in and shitting all over the lore, turning it into some weird wank?  That's what Eternal did as far as I'm concerned.  Lore is like sex, in that bad lore is not better than no lore.

You could use Doom 2016's plot as inspiration if you kept it firmly within the scope of that game.  But it might be better to just go with something like Doom 3, which was full of lore, atmosphere and thoroughly human characters, which are the sort of thing I'd think you'd want for a show even if people disagree on how effective they were as a Doom game.

I'd be more interested in it if they made an animated show, with lots of fighting and gore, some lore, easter eggs and stuff. Maybe do it like Love, Death + Robots and have individual stories done by different animators. That way it wouldn't get stale and have to be some long ongoing story. Epsiode with no dialog, episode on a weird space station, episode with a bunch of marines selling banned UAC weapons to aliens, episode on Titan, episode with an Imp trying to find stuff to fireball, episode where the guy wakes up at the end and it was just some mapper having a weird dream, episode where viles are having a BBQ and a cyberdemon knocks over the grill.... :P

I would rather they make a decent full feature film than a serial show, but I would definitely be interested if they made a show that was more like a mini-series documentary where they cover all aspects of Doom, from the beginning of Id planning it out and to where the series is today, now sure that’s been done to death on the internet, but I feel it could be done on a much higher scale if it were done as a serial, and doing so would allow various aspects that are often mentioned to be talked about without having to be condensed for time or flowing from one area to the next.

As for if it’s set in the game world, I really don’t see it working in a way that would please everyone. Doom guy doesn’t talk, it’s all about his battle with the demons. In my opinion the way films and shows are made today would not mesh very well with the tone of the original Doom games.

A movie based on classic era Doom should feel a bit like Dredd (not the Stallone one) where the protagonist not just by the script writing but from the actor, is portrayed faithfully (ex. Karl Urban wasn’t trying to show his pretty face the whole movie, he puts the helmet on at the start and it stays on like the comic character), and is in Alien’s setting mixed with Evil Dead in how it looks and feels with set pieces and practical effects. In the 90s that could’ve totally happened with the right budget and people behind it but no way in hell something like that could be executed in a way that would feel truly genuine. It would look like the actor is in a video game world, because they’ll use green screens and low effort set pieces, they will not use real explosions or even firing blanks for the guns. The demons will likely look great but will not use practical effects. That means the classic Doom vibe will feel flat. I could picture it how it could be but it would cost so much money and effort. I’m not trying to shit on CGI and green screens but it is true in my opinion that classic doom related movie or show would feel more classic doom if it were made with more of the grittiness the films it’s inspired by (alien, aliens, evil dead, etc) were made with. So, I don’t think that would be their choice. Doom guy would seem kind of silly if he were running around alone through the whole thing, talking to himself. Having him not speak at all could definitely work, it’s been done in film before, but most of those films have other people doing the talking still. As a movie, I could see this working in some way, especially in the past, but as a show I think classic doom would be a bit hard to pull off unless it were animated or entirely in CGI (ex. Beowulf).

I think Doom 3, which is the one everyone hates, truly has the best movie setup to the rest of the games, and even the original Doom movie was essentially a loose (extremely loose) telling of Doom 3’s plot. The reason I feel this way is there are tons of characters in the beginning to work with to build up the hell invasion part of the movie. There is a superior for the protagonist to follow orders from for about half of it, survivors in ventilation shafts (and elsewhere), and a human antagonist that has a sinister accent, not to mention the idiot that looks a bit like Steven Seagal and his personal escort with the BFG. That’s a lot of characters to work with, to kill off, to trick the audience with, etc. The lead character talking makes more sense because there’s people for him to communicate with.

Doom 2016 and Eternal have a lot more story elements that could be used for a movie or show too, but still would run into many of the problems they’d have with classic doom, only the CGI and things would look a little less out of place in my opinion, but to me they’d probably even CGI the slayer’s armor so I think it wouldn’t look much different from the games.

Anyways I think Doom having movies and shows would be something I would’ve wanted a decade or two ago, but now? I think if people really wanted to, they could make better Doom films within the game engines or whatever was used to make all those silly TF2 and Shrek videos than Netflix or Hollywood ever could, but I still stand by if they went with a mini docuseries type thing, that was just about Doom, that could be quite neat.

Would 100% enjoy an animated show; if it had gore and brutality like in Invincible.

They should make ZDoom-esque scripted series using Doom 2 stock sprites and textures. It would be about Doomguy VS. the main villain, the Icon of Sin. A Cyberdemon and Spidermastermind will be IOS' dumb minions and the series will revolve around Doomguy hilarously breaking down the equally hillarous plans of the IOS and it's minions (who mess IOS plans too).

It can have a "Doomguy Sez" section telling kids how to correctly use a Rocket Launcher and to "just say NO to Berserk Packs". Just imagine it, IT WILL BE NETFLIX NEXT HIT SERIES!

No, Doom should be a movie.

I'm aware that hasn't quite worked out twice.

But if done right, 2 hour action packed film with UAC facility going to shit and a marine stepping up to kill all the demons would be great.

A series is very long and is ideal for dialogue and character development. Not exactly Doom's remit.

Spoiler

I think Doom The animated series like lets say "Tarkovsky's" Samurai Jack or Primal would work. Like this example. But it should be from independent studio without "Effective Managers" involvement.
