Source Ports Doomworld Uses [adding up later this month]

Recommended Posts

Crispy Doom - 4

GZDoom - 3

Chocolate Doom/ChocoRenderLimits - 2

Crispy is my preferred port if the WAD runs on it. If it doesn't, I usually default to GZDoom. I use Chocolate Doom for vanilla mapping purposes, not really when playing other people's WADs.

Crispy Doom - 3

GZDoom - 2

Pr/GlBoom+ - 1

I use several others enough that I don't feel comfortable giving 9 to just the above.

The challenge is to assing 9 points to up to 3 ports

the math tells me this...

3/6 = 0,5  = 50%

2/6 = 0,3  = 33-34%

1/6 = 0,16 = 16%

9 * 0,5 = 4,5    = 5 for crispy

9 * 0,34 = 3,06 = 3 for GZ

9 * 0,16 = 1,44 = 1 for prboom+

?

Only 3 ports maximum, eh?

Gzdoom - 6

Prboom+ um - 8

Chocorenderlimits - 6

6+6+8 = 20 points

the math tells me this...

33 %, 34%, 33%

9 * 0,33 = 2 for gz

9 * 0,34 = 5 for prboom

9 * 0,33 = 2 foro chocorenderlimits

?

I'm surprised how many people in this thread can't read OP and/or count points.

Agreed, hopefully the above math can help out rd

I made the same mistake initially though

HAK's is fine. The OP allows up to 9 points. Thank you for letting walter know (walter feel free to repost).

@BCHQ it's up to 9 total, you have 10. (If you correct it, please repost because it'll be hard for me to track edits across multiple pages.)

edit: I'll use this post to say updated results will come tonight (in several hours)

No, it isn't. The challenge is assigning up to 9 points to up to 3 ports. My numbers need no modification.

Eternity Engine: 4

Crispy Doom: 3

Woof: 2

Have been playing recently mostly with Eternity Engine because it seems to have better xinput gamepad support than other demo compatible source ports. Crispy Doom is my favorite source port as a purist player when playing with keyboard and mouse, I wish it had better gamepad support, it would make it most used port for me easily. Woof is third mostly because I prefer to play limit removing maps over boom/mbf maps. But Woof is almost perfect boom/mbf compatible port for me, basically Crispy MBF, also lacking only in gamepad support.

I mostly use Zandronum and PRBoom/GLBoom. I don't use GZDoom much because I don't have the hardware for the hardware renderer, and all the other renderers suck for the kinds of mods you would wanna play with GZDoom. I like the Boom source ports because they feel pretty vanilla but still have some great accessibility and features. I also love Chocolate Doom, but I hate trying to load custom wads with it because I think you need to make a batch file or a whole new configuration just to load something besides the base game.

Edited by Skullhacker : *3 ports max, oops

Sorry about that.

GZDoom - 5
ZDaemon - 3
PrBoom+ - 1

GZDoom and ZDaemon are my main used sourceports for playing, PrBoom+ is mostly for testing Boom compatible maps and for demo handling.
I occasionaly use Crispy and Chocolate Doom for vanilla experience, or even for mapping.

I should take a look at Eternity Engine and DSDA at some point as they seem to be pretty popular right now.

Hope this is better @rd. The Area 51 secrecy is what it is, however! :)

From Doom with Love (dsda fork): 6

LZDoom: 2

Crispy Doom: 1

Crispy used to be my main for a very long time, but the recent updates to prboom+ and dsda won me over. I use LZDoom when I play a wad that needs zdoom/gzdoom features.

LZDoom - 4
PrBoom+ - 4
Chocolate Doom - 1

I usually use source ports of the GZ variety for my mapmaking, cause I'm just a big fan of coloured lighting, glowing floors/ceilings, portals, not 3D-floors and all that jazz. Recently though, my maps have had a tendency to become so big that LZDoom can't really handle them anymore, which is why I use PrBoom+ a lot as well. Chocolate Doom is solely for testing maps that are meant to be vanilla-compatible.

GZDoom - 7 I pretty much exclusively use GZDoom nowadays,

GLBoom+ - 1

Chocolate Doom - 1

The other 2 I used solely for testing.

Only used GLBoom to test some of my own Limit Removing stuff and Chocolate Doom when I made a couple of Maps for Final DTWID way back in the day.

glboom+ : 4
eternity: 3

gzdoom/doom retro (not sure what to put here): 1

honestly might just switch over to eternity altogether, only real things i miss from prboom are the autocentering weapons and an integrated dot crosshair (although i did replace the CROSS2 graphic myself to add one). i only use gzdoom when a wad requires it, and every once in a while i'll load up retro for the eye candy. i can't decide between these two for the third slot, so i guess it's either that or no third one at all.

7 for Gzdoom

2 for the Unity (since I play doom on the switch from time to time)

GZDOOM - 6
Unity - 3

I mostly use GZDOOM because most mods are made with it in mind, but when I want a vanilla experience with a good, controller friendly UI, I just use Unity.
