I'm a fan of synthesizers. Specifically analog synths like the MiniMoog and modular systems. I'm not a big fan of digital synths, except when it comes to reproducing real instruments and midi stuff.

I was wondering what you guys use for synthesizers, if you even do. If not, what do you use to listen to midi files?

I've been using a Casio WK-1630 for a control keyboard (I prefer the feel), a Roland JV-1010 synth module for the main bulk of my midi stuff, and a Boss DR-202 drum machine for when I need to get some classic analog drums (TR-909, baby!). I also have an AWE64, but I can't stand the thing, so I don't use it. I plan on either getting a MiniMoog Voyager, Alesis Andromeda, or some sort of Nord Lead.

I 110+ MB Soundfont that I assembled and tweaked myself.

I still find something about the sound to be lacking. The instruments are realistic enough, but they definitely seem to lack brightness and crispness that even the WarCraft II soundtrack has. There's always either too much bass, not enough bass, not enough treble, the reverb always seems muddled and drowned when too many instruments are used. And there's a heck of a lot more loss and squigliness when converted to 64kbps OGG, compared to most CD's which have almost no detectable loss...

I can't figure it out. Something is lacking, something is too muddled, something is wrong. I just can't figure out what. Everyone I demonstrate it to hears something wrong about it, like it's hard to hear. I just can't figure out what the difference is.

We could still arrange some file transfers. I can pretty easily master samples and it happens to make them sound a lot better.
Let me know, Andy.

Well, this is something that seems to apply to all Soundfonts. I mean, SBLive synths in general.

They say that using APSLive drivers is better for musicians, but I've tried that twice and it never came close to working.
