molten_ Posted October 25, 2021 (edited) It just dawned on me that it's been a little over 10 years since I joined the doom community. I don't know if any of you remember me, I only ever released one (very short) WAD: proto.wad (And made a few maps in Interception & 2048 Unleashed). A lot of my doom history is just unfinished projects. However, this post isn't about me. I just wanted to voice my happiness in how active the community is, and how many new faces I see on the forums today, after visiting for the first time in nearly 2 years. It makes me think of other old internet communities I used to actively participate in, such as TIGSource & MFGG ... yet this is the community that still persists today. Seeing new people still enthralled by the game I found captivating a decade ago ... it fills me with so much joy, and hope for the future. Here's to another 10 years! 25 Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted October 25, 2021 I only recently joined here, but I can share the sentiment: I’ve played Doom ever since 1993, when I was just a kid, and here, almost 30 years later, community seems to be thriving. It’s a testament on just how well Doom has endured the test of time - when I boot up the game, it still feels good as ever to play it. The same can’t be said of many of the same era (or later) games, which I used to like. Whenever I try Duke Nukem 3D, I remember having fun with it, but I no longer have fun with it. 9 Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted October 25, 2021 Haven't you heard, mate? Doom is ETERNAL. ;^) 9 Share this post Link to post
Silhouette 03 Posted October 25, 2021 (edited) Some might say that the Doom community is.... *Puts on shades* …Eternal! Spoiler I'll see myself out. I'm sorry. The low hanging fruit was too difficult to resist. Edit: Biodegradable beat me to the punch 2 Share this post Link to post

It's a good point. I'm sure nostalgia is a factor for me, but then I quickly jumped on to Duke, Q1, Q2, Unreal, Half Life etc as technology moved on at the time and nevertheless from 2000ish found myself regularly drawn back to Doom. Talking FPS games of that era, I only play Q1 (it has a smaller community than Doom but the content quality is amazing), Blood and Descent with any frequency. Duke3d has some good aspects but I really think it was the novelty that got everyone so hooked. The enemy set sucks. I think of Doom as the Super Mario 3 of first person shooters. It does the fundamentals so well that it remains fun even absent all the baubles and complexity that we're now used to. But it's the community that keeps it going. We wouldn't have all this activity around those same four E1M1-E4M8, Map01-Map30 rides. 5 Share this post Link to post

That’s true; although I have to say that I have almost exclusively played Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 all these years, with Xbox ports bringing first No Rest for the Living and finally Final Dooms. That said, fan made pwads are a treasure, and I might never need to return to Iwads after my pistol-start UV replay project is done. 2 Share this post Link to post
DarkIceCyclone Posted October 25, 2021 I must admit for an old game I did not expect near immidiate responses to my threads or posts. like, lightning fast compared to some other, now dead non-doom related forums 3 Share this post Link to post

CBM Posted October 25, 2021 I just wish I would have continued mapping after my first mapping experiences back in the late 90s, then I would have been pretty good at it now 3 Share this post Link to post

True enough :-) I've learned that there are still tons and tons of things I still don't know about UDMF map features, not to mention that I need to somehow get started on zscript.. I am still not completely aware of how, where and when coding can be used and how it can interact.. I know you can do decorate scripts and/or zscripts and place them in a pk3 file and I know you can do zscripting? inside a map to do stuff in the map itself 3 Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted October 25, 2021 It kinda surprises me how people keep communities like the Doom Community alive 1 Share this post Link to post
pcorf Posted October 25, 2021 It is more active than ever. I'll still be posting opinions, etc on here even if I was to stop creating maps. 5 Share this post Link to post
BetelgeuseSupergiant Posted October 25, 2021 I agree, Doom is already 28 years, but his community is very active. This is really amazing! 1 Share this post Link to post
vanilla_d00m Posted October 25, 2021 Best community/website on the internet right now. 2 Share this post Link to post
Captain Ventris Posted October 25, 2021 Such a contrast to the dark ages of the early 2000s. It feels like each year is a new renaissance now! 1 Share this post Link to post
