Might I suggest agin, a skul-gun for my head. Yesterday in Batery Park, some scum we all know pushes smack for NSF gets jumpy and draws. I take 2 .22's, 1 in flesh, 1 in augs, befor I can get out that dam asalt gun.

If I could kil just by thought, it would be beter. Is it my job to be a human target-practis backstop?

The music in the Classic Doom represents Doomguy's mental state. If you look at Doom 1's soundtrack, there's all these rock and metal tunes that gives you the feeling of "I'm gonna kick some demon ass!" but this starts to disappear a little bit once Doom 2 happens where the music is a bit somber I guess? In Doom 1, he was enthusiastic killing and ripping hellspawn into pieces but when he gets back to Earth in Doom 2, he sees the destruction of home and the music becomes less energetic and blood pumping, ending with Doom 64, the player now only hears ambience and occasionally demonic noises which could mean that Doomguy at this point is very sick of having to deal with demons and just wants to end it once and for all.

In the new Doom games, I can't really say much since I haven't played them yet but all I can say is that Doomguy is really pissed off, listening to the music.

I do believe in a minor id connected universe. Nothing too major other than Quake 3 and Champions brings together warriors from different dimensions and universes.

I think the Arena Eternal is a sort of weird timeless eldritch "thing." This is why in Quake Champions we see characters like Slash and Anarki being normal and Quake 3 having them as a corrupted form in their future. Because of this, this is why we see the classic Doomguy in Quake 3 but Doom Slayer in Champions.

I think theres some other minor details in the newer games but I hope theirs no real major canonical crossover moments in the future.

My head-canon:

PC Doom soundtrack is the music that is playing in Doomguy's head as he's running around blasting hell-spawns to bits.

PSX Doom soundtrack are the actual noises that are going on around Doomguy that he's tuning out.

Doom Eternal doesn't exist. It's a myth. I hate it whenever the idea that you're playing in/fighting against the forces of literal BIBLICAL HELL are actually just aliens. Like think about it; what's cooler, fighting against the one on the left, or fighting against the one on the right?

image.png.ad72c8ad828869eb79728b01cb130ddd.pngimage.png.30775efccb2e81b8c37aa833169c1fd1.png

I don't know why on more than one occasion, developers for a video game went "AYY LMAOOOO DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE"! Mob of the Dead from Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was so scary to me because it was literal Hell. Then Black Ops 4 came out and Treyarch went "Nope, this isn't Hell. This is weird squid alen place." It sucks how people who write stories want to avoid associating themselves with Hell nowadays, I don't care if alienates other religions, which I doubt would even happen because the religions without a concept of Hell really don't care if you believe Hell is real, and likely are taught to just appreciate the art as-is. Just say it's the Biblical Hell! That makes it 10 times scarier and more intriguing then some damned aliens. I don't want aliens! I don't want something I psychologically see as an equal.

A really scary and big and deadly alien in my mind, is just a bear. It's something that - if I got friends and we all put effort in killing it - can be brought down. A demon's very existence is to torment the living. That's way more metal, that's way more terrifying than Mr. Ayy L. Mao over there.

Doomguy doesn't actually die in E1M8, he's just gravely wounded (the level ends before your HP reaches zero).

Final Doom are two possible branching paths after Doom 2.

Doom 64, because of its striking departures in style and tone, is a 'gaiden' entry. Doom 4 and Doom Eternal are not cannon to Doom, Doom 2, or Final Doom, and are unofficial sequels to Doom 64.

"Every .wad is cannon" to me is not just dumb, but beyond arrogant, interfering with the work and intentions of innumerable authors and their .wads for cheap marketing and fanboyism.

Plutonia takes place in africa

The first level is named Congo, so that is what I always assumed. Third level is named Aztec though, so that presents a conundrum.

Considering how archaic most the weapons in the game are, I always assumed the UAC typically armed its soldiers with some experimental weaponry that didn't actually work, forcing the grunts to get rid of them. In other words the game is just 'Nam in space.

I think that 'Nam In Space doesn't quite work, because there's no international politics at play, there was no North Hell facing off against South Hell with the latter seeking help from the UAC, turning into an ill conceived war the UAC could never win and should never have involved itself in.

It's just the UAC having history's greatest oopsie and unleashing the physical manifestation of evil on all of mankind.

The M16 was worked out well and fixed its critical problems not that long after adoption turning out wholly superior to the M14. The experimental fantasy weapons which didn't work (Project Salvo / SPIW) were never issued widely, in fact they may never have been fielded in battle at all.

Also all the guns you find in Doom function flawlessly, from the antiquated shotguns to the futuristic rayguns, 100% reliable, usually good in accuracy, and with good to exquisite terminal ballistics. You never find a gun that sucks, and the rayguns seem like they would be experimental to me.

My chronology is:

Doom 3 + The Lost Mission

Doom 1 in parallel with Doom 3 once the invasion starts

Doom 2

No Rest for the Living

TNT

Plutonia

Resurrection of Evil - killing the man who started it all makes for a great ending.

Featuring a total of 3 characters. The marine from Doom 3, Doomguy for Doom 1 all the way to Plutonia and the guy from Resurrection of Evil that eventually kills Maledict.

Doom 64 and nuDooms are not connected with any of that.

My headcanon is ill always think Doomguys "real" name is Flynn Taggart. Dunno why. but i really like that name for him. doesn't sound generic like some other names for him.

Head canons were really important to me the first few times I played through DOOM. I was used to headier games with more story. DOOM was so immediate and scary, and so slight on explanation that my mind tried to fill things in as I went. I had many many head cannons...too many to list.

Mine mainly related to how the various objects encountered and layouts of levels might be explained. I came up with these on the fly, and eventually a framing narrative reverse engineered itself from all the pieces. It forked and there were several continuities and story arcs. All in my head, during gameplay and on the bus to and from school. Laying it all out would take two hours of typing.

This is specifically one thing that irks me in a lot of futuristic works, that people assume they'd just go and completely drop old reliable tech that has already been perfectly refined and works flawlessly in exchange for something completely experimental. Of course soldiers of the future will still have conventional early 21st century firearms around, if they're cheap to produce, easy to train with, and can be fed with plenty of ammo. It just works, dammit! Leave the fancy weaponry to specialists.

Phobos does not exist anymore. All Phobos labs except E1 from doom1.wad are simulated with modern UAC technology.

I think also this contributes strongly to Doom's Used Future Aesthetic, where it's sci-fi and the future, but you look at the junky old bases which appear to have been used hard for years, and so much of the tech looks downright primitive. There's nicer tech, but flying that to Mars or its moons will cost a lot more money than just repairing or maintaining this old thing which still works fine. There's probably certain sci-fi tech to let you craft replacement parts for outdated things anyway, so it's not necessarily a problem that Elevator Co. Ltd. went out of business 30 years ago.

I also imagine money is why the shotguns are prevalent, "We should have SOME guns, as a matter of principle, but what do we have to worry about, Moon Rebels? Martian natives?" and they see that Cabela's is having a bankruptcy auction, are in possession of mountains of old second hand hunting shotguns (which would be dirt cheap), so the UAC buys off some stock from them, has the barrels sawed off, then ships a few thousand offworld, and that probably covers some legal/tax requirements for them.

I dunno, I feel like the Doom 1 soundtrack is actually a lot moodier than people think. "Dark Halls", "Suspense", "Demons on the Prey", "Sign of Evil", "The Demons from Adrian's Pen", "They're Going to Get You", "Sinister", "Waltz of the Demons", and "The End of Doom", all sound ominous, eerie, or sad. From Doom II, I'd only list "The Demon's Dead", "Read Me", "Opening to Hell" as being that moody. The rest of the tracks, those that aren't rock and metal are more like muzzak.

If that's his mental state, I'd interpret it as going from angrysad to kinda bored.

This is actually something that mildly bothers me about Doom music covers and remixes that approach every track with the attitude that it needs to be HARD AND METAL AS FUK, when in fact a lot of the best tracks are exactly like you said, moody and cold and understated in a way that works a lot better when they aren't all overdriven guitars and blast beats.  Hell, come to think of it, some of the best parts of Doom itself revolve a lot more around fear and tension building through a map than they do orgies of ripping and tearing.

I agree. Some people have a similar approach to Duke Nukem 3D's music, the intro theme is actually pumping, but even the first level is more of a moody tension theme than anything else (with a moderately fast tempo). Most of Duke's soundtrack is dark and gloomy tunes of various kinds which set a certain grim mood (which is then put in sharp contrast to the levity that is Duke's ridiculous cartoon character persona).

I feel that some people don't consider that these games bear oppressive and outright scary atmospheres at times, which is where you really need these ominous kinds of tunes.

When Satan fell from Heaven, he hit his head and split his skull, causing a chunk of his brain to spill out. Through millennia of demonic rituals and mechanical augmentations, this fraction of the devil’s brain came to be known as the Spider Mastermind.

Doomguy's uncommunicative state in 2016/Eternal is due to an adverse reaction to all the berserk packs (steroids) he's used in the games before.

I think I've said this before (yeah, there's another 'head canon' thread out there), but I always thought the arch-viles had the power to 'zombify' humans - it kinda ties in with its' power to 'zap' you, like if you make eye contact with it, even from a great distance, it can make you lose your mind and start attacking regular people.  They went through the bases of Phobos and Deimos, completely conquering the moons and zombifying everybody, then moved onto Earth (that's why they aren't in Doom I).  They are the main 'lieutenants' of the spider mastermind, and the reason why the hell realm managed to take over Earth so easily.

Personally I think demon flesh probably tastes like peppered steak, with the blood having a hot sauce taste to it.

While most monsters will not infight with a member of its own species, the zombiemen and chaingunners will still kill each other and that is a byproduct of them being formerly human, a species known for its propensity to inflict violence upon one another.

Oh and the Lost Souls do it because they're a bunch of dicks.
