Doom inspired by Spear of Destiny?

Recommended Posts

I have never played SoD, but I have recently seen a play-trough on YT. At the end of an episode the player finds the titular spear and the bunker is transformed into a hellish maze: skulls replace swastikas on blue walls, brown stone walls are replaced with red stone adorned with occasional bones and the angel of death turns out to be a demon throwing green projectiles - sounds familiar? It appears that some of the ideas for Doom originated in the middle of 1992, over one year before Doom release.

BTW, does anyone know how this was implemented in the engine? Is the hellish level technically a different map, or does the engine support swapping textures on the fly?

Hitler messing with the occult was a big meme for a long time. Doom started as an Aliens game, then they fell back into demons once the movie deal fell through.

When you collect the Spear, the level is completed and the next level is loaded, with a few tricks pulled (don't show the load screen, retain the player's map co-ordinates and angle, don't update the HUD's "FLOOR" count, starting room of new level identical to room previous level ended in) to give the illusion that you're still on the same level and it's somehow warped around in ways the engine doesn't really support.

If you're one of those programmer-y types, you can search the source code for "spearflag" to see how it works.
