Finished my own HUD Face

Recommended Posts

It isn't based of me, but a friend of mine who approved it.

all states are unique and I didn't trace anything from the Doom guy HUD face (although with such limited space, the headshape still looks similar)

Here are some examples:

I like it. Custom hud faces are a nice touch and yours seems to have comedic flare. It might make more sense if his glasses were damaged or fell off when he gets really damaged but it's also kind of amusing that they stay on even in death.

Thanks man!

I tried to do exactly what you've described, but my experience with pixelart isn't advanced enough.

But then again, this is the 4th version, maybe I consider implementing it when the time has come.

Ps: This is how the 3rd version looked like XD : newface.png.cf3c0430b0bedc94805a12353ce5912f.png

This one was just traced from the original Doom guy sprite with an awful choice of color for the skin.

I prefer the more significant distingt head shape of version 4, which resembles way more the real person (f.ex. through the sharper chin and cheek bones)

There's some strange alchemy with pixel art where the discrete boxes give the illusion of continuity when put just so but it's hard to know ahead of time what's going to look great and what is going to break the spell. It might be as simple as truncating his glasses in low health states or drawing a couple light pixels that look like cracked or broken glass, but it looks good as is too, so apart from feasibility it's a question of personal taste.

Yeah and besides, I've already added too many details to the eyes.

The blood, the purple eye, the bandage,... I doubt it's going to be a readable face if the glass broke too,

but I could certainly try.

Try until it's perfect or you can no longer be bothered. It's repetitive enough to give me pause when I think about changing something. These are some frames from two faces I made for the Ravager player class I built. I wasn't sure I liked the helmet so I made a second set. By the second iteration my enthusiasm for making changes was more than a little diminished but I'm still glad I made them. Did you have a specific theme or kind of game in mind or just seeing what you can do with the tools?

Edit: you can see I steered away from showing helmet damage on round 2.

I didn't really thought about a theme to be honest.

It was literally my first pixelart project; and while I am skilled in digital and traditional art, I pretty much still had to learn a lot.

Of course basics, like shading and facial features are easier to do with prior knowledge, but like you already mentioned, there's a certain magic touch to pixelart.

But if I had to choose, I activly went into a more comicly direction,

because I thought stuff like devil horns, purple eyes, overly exaggerated bandages, etc. are more interesting to look at then a face in a slightly different angle.

Also, I really like the first version of your helmet.

These cliché viking helmets with the historicly inaccurate horns are well overdone in my opinion,

details like the advanced face protection additionally falling off with more damage taken and the feather decoration on the sides are really endearing.

The gore is on point too, especially the last 2 of the second version and the last of the first.

But the source of your disliking is probably the bland silouette, that's probably why you tried the horns.

You could break up the sillouette with reinforcments, like rivets or give it some battle damge in form of dents, improvised repairs or scars.

The battle damage also could take away the monocolored surface, which you already spiced up with lighting and smaller rivets.

You're tempting me to go in for round three which would probably involve the Ravager pawn sprites as well. Not terrible but I'm making non extreme death sequences for heretic and Hexen monsters...

Anyways, happy Thanksgiving!

Here are non extreme death sequences for the green and brown serpents, ophidian, golem and afrit.

They might need some work. You or others could use them with my blessing if you gave me credit. The first two frames of the green serpent and the first of the brown serpent are part of the Hexen iwad already though.

Spoiler

The interweb doesn't make November seem like a particularly jolly time in Germany. I hope things are going better over there than they are over here.

Yeah, they are kind of rough on the edges. As an example, the brown seperent's head could use more action, like if the head wouldn't stay in one piece when it hits the floor.

But overall looks good. You get some respect from me for trying to modify monster sprites, Im terrible with those.

Ps: Did you made this magic Super Shotgun yourself? It looks awesome! What I'd give to use it myself.

Spoiler

Ah, y'know, the 4th Corona wave just dropped, the new goverment isn't in power yet and the old one is just trying to save their own ass in face of the pandemic, everything is closing down and everybody gets in eachothers hair about if we should enforce obligatory vacination.

But everyone's already in Chrismas mood, that's nice.

I'll definitely clean up the brown serpent and add some frames. I call the magic super shotgun the Snake Gun. I don't know how to upload wad files yet but I'll clean up the sprites (the reload hand is wonky) and send it your way. The alt fire works like the clerics serpent staff!

Spoiler

Here the prices for everything are skyrocketing, people are paranoid and I don't ever hear good news. I heard about a manned mission with a reusable rocket though so that's cool.
