Poetry of the Doomworld

Recommended Posts

Hey folks!

I wanted to make an ongoing thread for folks to share their poetic works (or short flash prose)

Poetry has become incredibly important to me in the past year, moreso, the sharing and discussing of my peer's poetry is something I cherish, so I wanted to create a platform here to do that.

Poetry, I believe, is chiefly designed for a writer to illustrate their heart with words. Sharing these words can be a difficulty. So cherish the opportunity some may take here; I encourage (but certainly do not require) incredibly vulnerability from writers.

This thread can also serve as a workshop for poems. So if you'd like feedback on something, feel free to ask! (please keep critiques of work only for people who ask for it. Don't lay down undue criticism for other works) However, please refrain from posting multiple drafts of your work. You can have a rough draft or two, but please, try to refrain from filling up the thread with a metric shit ton of the same exact poem with minor differences in each line.

With that being said, I'll kick us off with one I wrote for class a few days ago. Yes. It does have a doom reference in it.

I'm by no means knowledgeable about anything related to poetry. To illustrate that sentiment and my general low-brow energy, my favorite style is the limerick because of its musical rhythm and comedic punchline. Starting a poem with "There once was a man from Nantuckett" can get me to smile just about every time, because I imagine it being recited with absolute confidence and sincerity, and it's a slap in the face to anything taken seriously, and to me that's where my favorite aspect of art exists. I want my epitaph to be a very sarcastic limerick, to hopefully cheer up anyone passing by the cemetery.

At any rate, I do a bit of writing mainly to accompany music, and I'd like to share one that I haven't recorded yet because I think it works just as well written down. It's by no means supposed to be taken seriously, but it might be entertaining! It's not exactly limerick, but has that same energy and is sang roughly with the same cadence and melody as Ievan Polkka by Loituma except for where there are italics.

Legend of Lizardman

Lizardman was a princely sort from the woodlot grove off the eastern fjord
He always got along with the mountain kin, for he carried with him ale and had the finest chin

The king caught wind of the broken rules of turning working folk into dancing fools
He wanted him dead and began to resurrect the dreaded beast that we know as Splobster

Splobster knew that if he were to kill Lizardman then the folks would know
They'd throw him in the stocks but then again he's a god so fuck them

Still he thought it would be fun to shame the lizard man and make him a kinsman slave
He forged a magic lizard trap that would only trap a lizard

And he shouted:
"I am the Splobster, a most crustaceous arachnoid
I shall catch the Lizardman, and his kin shall be afraid"

As Lizardman traversed the hills picking berries from the orchard gills
He heard a call from the fountain tree, but not a birdie nor fairy was there to see

As eight great limbs grew from the tree, the Lizardman fell unto his knees
His lizard eyes then began to see twice as many eyes upon him

And it shouted:
"I am the Splobster, from the dreaded fables told
I have caught you in my trap, you shall see the world no more"

Lady Gertrude from beyond the sea, hath sensed the woes of a travesty
She shed her skin and it formed a chin and every other part of a human

The human flew across the way, ignoring the crippled, the sick and enslaved
She formed once more into a mighty sword in the mighty hands of the lizard man

The lizard thrust with a mighty heave yet the splobster's blood refused to leave
So he raised the sword and he cleaved once more, and the Splobster's brain fell unto the floor

And all the kinsmen shouted:
"Death to the Splobster, and his brain from the skull you tore
All hail the Lizardman, our daughters shall be yours

Our daughters shall be yours! HOORAY!"

@BluePineapple72 Ill challenge you to take your DoomPoetry one further - Make a WAD out of it utilizing Boom's Extended Help Screens.

Its a unused Boom feature, and besides Fraggle, nobody is doing anything with it. But it is a creative feature, and your poetry is just the right fit for it. Heck, maybe you can run it with a launcher?

Ill also do an off-the-cuff Haiku:

Hell, desolation.

Barren, on my own,

My final stand yet to come.

I like it but technically haiku is 5-7-5 and includes a seasonal or nature reference :P (I guess Hell can be considered part of nature though... it's like one infinite season of pain and suffering?) Your poem is more like a Senryu. I'm just nitpicking though...

Rain, over my visor.

Health in place, resting in the corner,

An imp weeps.

Here's one I wrote when I was still in school (Translated to English by me)

I Can't Sleep at Night

I can't sleep at night.
For hours on end I toss and turn in bed.
I pass my nights with the sting of mosquito bites.
I can't sleep at night.

Ethereal Capsule

Ethereal capsule, formed from fragments past and present,
Descending and unraveling bittersweet content;
Energetic and dynamic as it flows, imparting a message:

"Time, both infinite and intangible, having existed
Before digits and words, fails to be captured and controlled;
Chronological perception without bias leads to revelations.

Ceaselessly bombarding reality with external stimuli,
The inescapable truths of existence hold in captivity
All whom must inevitably pause and accept its epiphany. . .

Humanity is a foolish animal, condemning itself to tragedy:
The false narrative is a collective dream within chaotic reality
Countless souls seek to embody, inviting undue suffering."

In the memory of the reader this statement may remain
As a universal truth expressed in a classic way:
It is a timeless message phrased beyond the present day.

Oh Bright and Lovely Body of Light

Shining from above, your radiance illuminates this world.

The darkness beneath retreats in your presence, struggling to maintain its shadows.

Both practical and romantic in nature, you are reliable during the night.

Few times do you ever neglect to appear when you are needed and wanted,

Oh bright and lovely body of light.  A world without you defies all expectations.

When you leave us, it is implied that you promise to reveal yourself once more.

When the evening takes over for the day, and when the black night manifests,

It is certain that faith in your return will be rewarded and celebrated. . . .

Oh bright and lovely body of light.

  • The Pillaging of Life

Too many times I retreated from conflict,

Allowing fear to separate me from victory.

It became predictable for me to surrender,

But deep inside, I would die in spirit.

One promised day for a fated battle,

Inside I burned with a white-hot flame.

It ignited in my soul and gave me bravery:

The variety stronger than the will to live.

The will to fight consumed body and psyche,

Driving me straight towards the enemy.

Despite burning with power internally,

I was calm as a cloudless blue sky.

That day, I pursued a fading opportunity,

To begin claiming loot from the fallen enemy.

To think, had I been determined like this before,

I could claim as my own the foes' treasure.

The pillaging of life;

The desires to plunder;

The resolve to become stronger:

My determination is sharper than a knife!

The pillaging of life;

Forcefully pursuing true individuality;

Freely defending my dream:

Piercing fangs that cut and slice!

The pillaging of life;

Stealing away hope from adversity;

Pilfering mundane miracles from tragedy:

The loot I severed I display for all to see!

Oneself

Stirring up inside are feelings buried;
Hiding from your thoughts, they became magnified.

Multiplied in intensity, they cry out in your psyche;
Magnified and sparkling, they feel like electricity. . .

The pure promises you made to yourself;
The decisions you made alone;
The beliefs you made your own:
Fragments of individuality boil your body.

Burning away impurity, the true self manifests,
Sincerely merging your past soul shards.

The you that existed then calls out,
Synergizing with you and eliminating all doubt. . .

Who you are now is fading away:
Your true self is reborn today.
You didn't completely change;
All of you fails to feel strange.

As a flame that flickers, your soul burns;
Its fire is dynamic, reshaping as one learns
The truth about oneself, combusting as it warms.
From a spark of ember, an inferno comes.

Adversity's rain will come, dimming the light,
And threatening to quiet the roaring might. . .

Even if only ashes remain, heat will stir,
And the glowing light will shine forever.

The Healer Stalks

Streets inundated with silence,
Walkway's rosy of blood,
Corpses lay grim decour,
Among them army of hell flood.

Later arrives a champion
With bravery and might,
Double barrel in hand,
Ready for intense gory fight.

Possesed soldiers explode in groups,
Pinkies protruding holes,
Imps fall in painful groan,
On quick smoke dissappear lost souls.

Way behind them in the darkness
Tall skinny creature locks
Its eyes on hell's corpses
With fiery hands, the healer stalks.

Defects

Living meat produced on line
Wired to be disposable labour.
Programmed on with gleeful bliss
For everyone to control over.

But among of all the copycats,
Some happen to malfunction.
Become rational and defiant,
Aware on diminution.

Defects roam among the living meat
Searching ways to validate.
But everyone puts them in a cage.
The husks won't collaborate.

Some in public, some who isolate,
Gain poison, then spit anger
Against oppressing conformity,
Struggling ways to differ.

Finding refuge in a nice cottage
Of ideas and colour
Where defects, architects of image,
Reprogram new living meat.

The world seems to lose its mind
Every single day
And the fight continues its attempt to find
A sense of sanity in this dim world

Sacred is the silence of the fighters
As without their words there is peace.

I'm a great fan of litterature so there is no way I wont contribuate here :)

Though...

There is no Doom link in my poetry, it's more likely to speak about human being...

Also, as a non-native english speaker, this is basically written in my own language of born : french, I'll probably put the original first written in french and then approximatively translate in english, but it will kill the feels for sure, sorry for that.

This one is particularly personnal as it talk about a girl I used to love deeply, but now she's just gone :

French : (original)

Oubli

J'oublierais nos caresses y compris nos baisers

J'ai oublié toutes les autres mais pourquoi pas toi

Au fond de moi de toi à la haine il n'y a qu'un pas

J'oublie de te dire tant de choses le doute me ronge

Le regret est une pluie je suis une éponge

J'oublierais mes tristesses tu as oublié les tiens

Forget

I forgot my pain when the time made us wound

From dawn to dusk only my tears were visible

I forget our grudges but I keep our smiles

In the hereafter perhaps we could heal

I'll forget our future that won't exist

I'll forget about our rings that have fallen so low

I've forgotten your perfect blue eyes and your mouth

Your sunny hair your body that lies down

I still forget not without difficulty my soul stumbles low

Sometimes I wish it would fall back into your arms

I would forget everything even our intertwined loves

I would forget our caresses including our kisses

I have forgotten all the others but why not you

Deep inside of me from you to hate there's only one step

I forget to tell you so many things the doubt gnaws at me

Regret is a rain I am a sponge

I would forget my sorrows you have forgotten yours

And your tender happiness will shine on mine

But I don't think I'll forget who you are

In my memories this girl I loved

You're still and forever enthroned in my ardor

Forever on the pedestal of my poor heart

I know that's really out of the Doom atmosphere, prehaps that's why I'm here today :)

Doom is a great game, and even more its community.

Pretty good I like a lot I prefer the french version I feel like there are certain words that exist in french that explain things better but still very good even in English

Gross Reality

Isolation, sweet poison,

Guard of mind and soul,

Which gives no reason

Going outside at all.

Windows, grim showpiece

Of dystopian buildings,

Which force to release

All the lesser beings.

Humans, meat machines,

Dumb and fleeting slaves,

Which money demeans

Any sort of braves.

Terra, weak woman,

Molested and hurt,

Full on affliction.

Users are inert.

Victory and Defeat

Before victory, display strong fighting spirit;

Before defeat, only go down swinging. . .

Believing yourself to be worthy,

Keep striding, facing the enemy.

Be faithful to your potential;

Real inner strength and guile --

Dial up your determination;

Embrace the white-hot sensation. . .

Elimination of hesitation;

Concentration upon a new revelation:

The soul of a human rising to the challenge:

To be bold and to bend but not unhinge.

After victory, hold on that intensity;

After defeat, reflect upon the outcome.

Succubus

Wandering randomly in the dark
Middle of a dimly lit park,
I see sitting a strange shadow.
Of unearthly splendour bestow
Having sympathy for the devil.

As the light shines on the creature's face,
Angelic smile, demonic gaze,
Body of fallen deity.
Somehow I need affinity,
Having sympathy for the devil.

As we intersect our pair of eyes,
Hungry stare starts to hypnotize.
Pulling me down under her charm
And even if she starts to harm,
Having sympathy for the devil.

On a dirty dark alleyway left,
Flatout naked and being theft
Of body fluids and belongings.
I can't believe myself falling,
Having sympathy for the devil.

Fossil Factory

Some decades have passed
Since the forges turned fickle,
But rusty remnants
Of the hammer and sickle,
Made fossils on stock
In a fast rate so mickle.

Creatures born blissful,
Mistaking wisdom with age;
When forcing the change,
They manifest fear with rage;
Naive and careless,
With remnants as slaves engage.

Among, rebels rose,
The fossils' offsprings, to save
From remnants' control
So no newborns to enslave.
But futile voices
Are forced on new paths to pave.

With time, on this land,
Each one fossil and remnant,
Will meet on their death.
Meanwhile every descendant,
On for better wealth
Struggle outside in present.

L.O.V.E.

Loyal,
A sign of devotion,
For certain individuals.
With respect, dedication,
That lasts eternal.

Official,
Sharing with all the world,
A new exciting happening,
Most of the times known to hold
Some immense bearing.

Volatile,
Flexible and liquid
Able to compromise a bond
Where idea's conflicted.
For souls to be fond.

Emotion,
Fuel for lucid beings,
Dopamine and adrenaline,
With heavy effects, fleeting.
Very mettlesome.

Loyal,
Official,
Volatile,
Emotion,
A heavily sought concoction,
Easy to give, hard to get.
Only ones pulling attraction,
Are able to be blessed,
Who won't seek flesh.
Only those who keep coalesce,
Even in death.

Hard Shell

As years and years went,
The burdens grew on the back
Into sturdy dome ascent.
Heft left sight pitch black.

As more and more stood,
Inside this chilling coffin,
Question why and how it could
Walls crack and soften?

As loud and loud shout
For people living in light,
Have pity letting it out.
Just selfish souls sight.

As tears and tears drop,
Out of desperate pair eyes,
It's deciding on to stop.
Wait till the time dies.

As ways and ways change,
Surge wires extending ties
Of the farther and the strange
With same harsh demise.

As lots and lots souls,
In groups going to gather,
Being able finding goals
Break shells together.

Jar Of Fire

When sudden growth strikes youth,
Flicker of light is coming
Inside of a dark jar,
Fuelling intense emotion,
Searching for perfect sooth.

As jar's inferno spreads,
Bearer seeks outsiders love
To quench the burning's size.
Instead they pour gasoline.
Fate seems thinning it's threads.

While swallowing the heck,
Fumes start to suffocate.
Gets harder to contain
The despair and the anger.
Jar's walls begin to crack.

Jar of fire in pieces,
Spreads the hurting more and more,
Till it burns the holder
From skin deep into the soul.
Only pain releases.

I can't fall in love with you
-----------------------------

Do you really need me
To be by your side constantly?
Do you want to be
With me for eternity?

Flattering, but listen closely:
I can't fall in love with you.
With much sincerity,
I'll explain why I feel the way I do. . .

I find you troublesome,
To be perfectly honest. . .
I love being with you,
But you always have your problems. . .

Don't you go on too much worrying --
Always obsessing with some petty thing
Beyond your control?

Don't you know how to let go?
Set your heart free:
Some things are not meant to be. . .

Do you really need me

To be the one you love completely?
I don't understand why you see
Me so ideally. . .

Shattering your heart:

I don't want to hurt your feelings.
With sorrow, you just have to know
From me: I can't fall in love. . .

Shove aside every romantic dream:

Don't let me become your everything.
Carry on strongly:
You can live without me. . .

Won't you give up charming
Me?  You're only wasting
Your love and affections. . .

I can't fall in love with you;

I can't lie and lead you on
A path to a broken heart.
I care for you, just not in that way.

If you want to stay by my side,

Don't try to change my mind.
Don't try to hold my hand
Or embrace me absolutely. . .

Need me not;

Carry on like you were previously
Before you met me.
You are strong inside, don't you see?

I can't fall in love with you. . .
I can't fall in love with you. . .
I can't fall in love with you. . .

I can't fall in love with you
[Purple Prose Version]

-----------------------------

Exchanging serious words,
We speak of unbalanced love.
I would weigh you down,
Rather than lift you up. . .

Crushing your heart, you fall
In spirit, due to what I tell you.
The gravity of my words keeps you down. . .

"I can't fall in love with you.
You're too easily thrown about by worry,
Making you someone I can't rely upon
To stay grounded in light times with me."

After these words reach you and strike,
I feel your sorrow in your eyes.
You hold back tears, trying not to drown yourself.
The sadness washes over you, and soaks our souls.

I can't fall in love with you;
You are just too fragile and easily broken;
Too sensitive to others' words.
I can't tolerate how you shatter in spirit. . .

I care for you, and I witness your breaking heart
Escape your body through your emotions.
I know your pain is my fault, but it would hurt
Even more if I guided you with insincere romance.

As you look into my eyes, and see into my soul,
You can't find the words to charm me
Into accepting your hand you extend outward,
Causing you to behold my rejection in whole.

I can't fall in love with you;
You are simply too afraid I'll leave you alone.
This desperation is unflattering and ugly,
Failing to befit your beautiful soul.

I can't accept such intense love from you;
I don't want to need anyone to complete me
Like a puzzle; I need no further assembly. . .

"Stay together, for you are strong.
You weren't so vulnerable before we met.
Carry on your old ways once more,
Accepting my honest feelings towards you."

I say to you.  Embrace me not,
For it will fail to charm me into romance.
Awaken from such dreams to give your heart
To me that is lonely and soaked with sorrow.

I can't fall in love with you;
Your words will fail every time you try.
If you cry, I can't comfort you.
The tears in my soul over this outcome form. . .

I can't fall in love with you,
So be my friend and accept this kind of love.
I care for you and wish to see your face
Shine with the beautiful smile you have.

As we part from our bittersweet meeting,
We look into each others' eyes.
Holding back tears, you then walk away,
Hiding your face. . .

I can't fall in love with you. . .
I can't fall in love with you. . .
I can't fall in love with you. . .

Empty Canvas

The dreams of the past;
The hopes for the future;
The undying energy of the moment:
Every second flows with my effort absolute.

In a passionless world,
It would be easy to surrender
Before anything even begins
To avoid a struggle.

The way of the weak in spirit
Is to blend into dull scenery
That inhibits hopes and dreams
Whispering in the psyche.

The words in the soul carry a vision
Illustrating desires to paint colors
Upon the black and white surface
That display a mundane reality.

I see the truth on the empty canvas
Even if the artwork is incomplete.
The vision of the heart grows clear,
As I shape it unto the ethereal media.

Without labels and titles,
The strokes of the brush strike,
One after another, until the image forms
Representing the soul's expression.
