Sony is purchasing Bungie.

Recommended Posts

Tbh Sony can have Bungie, maybe they'll make something new worthwhile that doesn't crutch on insidious microtransactions, agressive paywalling and literally 4 season passes PER paid DLC.

I don't care, Marathon Rubicon will never happen.

My biggest question is why? Especially after reading this from Bungie's blog post about the acquisition

The only possibility that my pea-brain can think of is that Sony wants to work on a shooter to rival CoD, which will most likely be a Microsoft exclusive franchise in the next couple of years (after the Activision acquisition is finalized and after whatever contractual obligations Activision and Sony have expire)

So much for that Marathon Trilogy remaster...

IMO this is in preparation for Spartacus. Sony is looking towards their restructured subscription service and securing titles that won't be appearing on Game Pass. Didn't work out for MLB The Show 2022, but it's the only logical reason I can think of that there is no exclusivity involved.

That said, back in the early days of Playstation, Psygnosis had an incredible amount of autonomy, even going as far as releasing Wipeout and Destruction Derby on the Saturn and N64. Eventually the shareholders voted to shitcan Psygnosis' leadership and restructure it into Studio Liverpool, so I have a feeling that this arrangement may not be permanent.

TBH I'm not a fan of this acquisition war we find ourselves in - there are already too few big corps at the top controlling huge swathes of the industry and I'm not sure that more consolidation is healthy. Still, it gives the fanboys more shit to fling at each other.

So let me get it straight: Bungie left Microsoft for Activision Blizzard, which in turn ended up getting acquired by Microsoft while Bungie gets acquired by Sony. If I did not know any better, I would think Bungie is trying to run away from Microsoft!

This is not really surprising. It won't take long and Microsoft and Sony will control the entire market.

Could be worse. Could be Facebook and Google.

Bungie originally made Halo CE for mac, After a long time Apple said it was a bad idea, Bungie joined Microsoft, Apple angry, Years later Bungie left Microsoft, Years later Sony bought Bungie.

That's some nice cycle.

Never did Apple consider Halo a bad idea. In fact, Steve Jobs personally promoted Halo in Macworld 1999 and was only angry after Microsoft acquired Bungie.

I don't care for any Bungie game past halo so I don't care about this at all.

It's more of a threat to Microsoft.  That's what the acquisition war is all about, however Sony is around 1/10 the size of Microsoft so it's clear to me who will win out.  What is more important is that Microsoft isn't buying out companies because sony want's them.  Facebook (or whatever it's called now) wanted to buy Acti-Bliz, that's why Microsoft bought them.  Microsoft is just fighting the other American tech giants, not Sony.  That is also terrifying that all of these companies are trying to get into the space however.

If I am not mistaken, Apple also produced a port of Marathon 2 and 3 for their ill-fated attempt at a gaming console.
