QOTSA scored #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 this year :)

Recommended Posts

Yup, just like last year, I'm posting the Hottest 100 list, this time for the year of 2002.
For those that don't know, the Triple J Hottest 100 is an annual poll where the general public gets to vote for their favourite songs of the past year. It is voted by and listened to people all over the world thanks to the wonders of the interweb, and this year 750,000 votes were registered, which just reaffirmed it's status as the world's biggest listener-voted music poll.
It's been a bit of a record breaking year. As I mentioned before, 750,000 people voted, which is the biggest vote by far. Dave Grohl played on 10 of the tracks in the Hottest 100, beating the previous record of 9 held by The Cure. 7 Aussie tracks made the top 10, equalling a previous record (can't remember the year). And The Vines beat Alanis Morrisette's record for most chart entries by a debut act (Alanis had 3, The Vines have 4).
And if you can't tell by the title, I'm quite happy that No One Knows scored position #1 :)
Anyway, on with the list...

/me smashes his head repeatedly into his desk

Oddly enough, I only know how the first song goes, and thats only because a friend made me listen to it not too long ago. As for the other 99 songs, whatever. I couldn't recognise 75% of those bands even.

If these songs are just ones that were released last year, then I really couldn't think of 100. The only CDs of note I can remember being released in 2002 were the KMFDM albums, and Attak (their main release) wasn't really that good. This year seems more promising though, seeing as how there is yet another KMFDM album, an ohGr album (yaaaay!), and a skinny puppy album all due out in the next 12 months or so.

/me looks stupid and industrial and should really pay more attention to other cool bands like Tool and Coil and Das Ich and so forth...

I can't believe that none of Feeder's 2002 singles (and there were what, three?) made it into that list :(

Seems wierd that an underground band like grinspoon should have more than 3 songs in that list...Who made this list? Aussies?

Didnt realize Jamaraquai still made music, cool. Other than them and the foo fighters though, I dont think I recognize anyone on the list.

What/who the hell are all those bands? I used to be in touch (more or less) with popular music... OK, I know a few of them, but...

i really love R, but i haven't even listened to anything from the new QOTSA yet. i guess the fact that it's bringing them closer to the mainstream (like in this list) that kinda scares me...

this is my favorite 2002 release overall, #1 song would have to be Date Of Expiration. other good ones: Intervention (from Royal Hunt's The Watchers), The Odyssey (from Symphony X's The Odyssey), and Daylight Dancer (from Lacuna Coil's Comalies)...

care to make that sentence readable?

dan looks stupid and industrial and he should really pay more attention to other cool bands like Tool and Coil and Das Ich, not that he doesn't already.

...

I listen to them all the time sure, but I know little about the bands themselves and I wouldn't know if a New Album was coming out even if the date was emblazoned in 1000 foot letters on the side of Mt. Rainier (mostly because a tree grew in front of my view of it).

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... *ahem*

Hottest 100 web page for all those that care

And yes, Triple J is an Aussie radio station, but it's name is known around the world (much like KROQ is known).

And Liam: If anything, Songs For The Deaf is less poppier than Rated R. Rated R had heaps of different sounds, but for the most part SFTD just takes 1 sound in several different directions.

could you possibly give me a link to all the top 100 from the past 2 years? (or the link to the post you made last year).

Probably the only thing I like on that list is the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age. Audioslave is cool too.

To answer a question, Audio slave is Rage Against the Machine. The original singer left, and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden expressed an interest in joining the band, they jammed for a while under the name Civilian, and then became Audioslave. They are fairly different from Rage against the Machine.

Moby/U2/System of a Down are good too.

Ooh, only just noticed Machine Gun Fellatio on that list. One strange band they are, but they do some good stuff.

Yeah, it's kinda weird listening to Chris's usual lyrics about Jesus to a RATM riff... :P Still, Audioslave is pretty kewl.
