Russia supposedly plans to cut of the whole country out of internet.

Recommended Posts

That is what I have just read on czech news website..

Sounds nasty, like many things from selfish crazy dictators.

What would that mean for russian wad authors like Alexander Eternal? or Memfis?

Sounds like something out of a tabloid. Is that Czech news media unbiased and reliable?

If Putin cuts off his own country off the internet it'll have a negative effect on the Russian economy, its not like the internet is just for porn and memes which is probably what Putin thinks of it, like all politicians who are out of touch with reality.

The people who makes a living by working for foreign companies as programmers and such will be the first to suffer the consequences

He's already cut off several social media sites (not PHub, interestingly). Weirdly it's been kind of an opposite effect as well- companies are taking the liberty of restricting Russian users from their services.

edit: all that said, I know that Russian citizens are mostly not responsible for what is happening and I also know that protesting is not a great option for them either. (Daily Mail sucks but it's a video demonstrating why)

IIRC, Putin has already banned Facebook and Instagram, and some of my favorite Russian YouTubers are waiting for that to be banned as well. However, YouTube itself has already cut off Russian vloggers from ad revenue, so they have to rely on Superchat income, but even that is dependent on where it comes from. This is all in addition to ApplePay and GooglePay cutting off their Russian customers, along with Visa and Mastercard. This will help China when they provide workable replacements for these services.

Edit: I have to mention that the shutdown of RT, and in particular the demise of RT America, removed some of the best Left-wing content around, in particular On Contact with Chris Hedges, and Redacted Tonight with Lee Camp, so the censorship hammer is being wielded far and wide.

Putin has undone over 30 years of progress for his country in just a few weeks.

This is only partially related, but I just want to say that all the "anti Russian people" propaganda I've seen going around is fucking gross. So many stories and media outlets (old and new) are acting as if every Russian is just a "lesser clone" of Putin.. It's honestly the way a fucking 5 year old would view the world. Seeing people cheer for already-poor-and-starving Russians not being able to access their money or get food to eat makes me think human beings are simply a toxic poison, a blight on the universe. Any species that can view the suffering of others as a positive is fundamentally twisted to the core.

Agree 100%.

No different to someone declaring all African Americans thugs because they were mugged by one once or blaming all Asians for Covid. Stupid, racist nonsense.

One thing to keep in mind though is that in our current information overload age where the media loves to print negative stuff because it generates clicks more is that it can easily twist one's view about the number of stupid and/or nasty people out there. Truth is, most people are basically decent. Flawed, yes, but basically good who just want to live their lives and do not actively seek to hurt anybody. One need only look at how much relief efforts have generated for the Ukraine, not to mention the workers going into a literal warzone to see how good some people can be. Unfortunately "nice person does nice thing" does not typically make for a catchy headline.

when will the Russian and Ukraine threads go away already

I honestly agree. There’s other sites for talking about this stuff. Everything Else became “Election chat elsewhere” for some time to help avoid topics about Trump vs Biden, I don’t see why this cannot be the case for this conflict. I come to DW to get away from this shit. My heart goes out to anyone on this site who is in either of these countries, but there’s nothing blowing smoke on Doomworld about the whole thing is going to fix.

I'm sorry, but stopping people expressing their anxieties about what is a pretty Big Deal because war is a bummer really doesn't sit right with me. Cancer's a bummer to, but I would never ask someone not to post about themselves or a loved one dealing with it even on an old video game forum.

I won't bullshit you by saying that a thread about a war won't be political, nor will I say that I am a galaxy brained centrist who doesn't have a preferred side. But I think we're mostly smart enough not to do start cheer leading or getting into weird conspiracies. If it's just one or two threads focusing on people and nobody starts, say, posting links for donations to questionable militias or playing down how bad a nuclear war would be, I don't see the issue.

I'll state this in the most non-partisan way I can:

I wish my absolute best to Ukrainians. I wish for you all to have a healthy and prosperous life after being pushed into this violent ordeal.

I wish my absolute best to Russians. I wish for you all to have a healthy and prosperous life after being dragged into this violent ordeal.

But if you've ever thought that war was good, or just, or didn't destroy the people involved, watch Come and See: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

I think threads like this should be allowed to remain open, considering that it is major news related to technology/internet, not just politics. I'm sure many people here wouldn't have read about this if it wasn't for this thread.

I agree, there is a difference between access and politics. This doesn't just affect some of us, it's major news, and discussion should be allowed.

I realize that we don't want a shitstorm of arguments about politics to start happening, but I think it's okay to address the situation. There are quite a few Doomers who access through Eastern European or Russian servers; and I would like to know if they're okay. Be they Eastern Europeans, or in the Russian Federation themselves, I'd like to know how they're doing.

As long as the discussion doesn't collapse into a complete cluster, it should be held open.

Again, wishing the best for the Ukrainians and the Russians out there.

Well the news website is www.ct24.cz, should be reliable.

I think they wrote, that he is just thinking or planning it. They are changing their servers to not be reliant on data from other countries and they are pushing more restrictive laws each few years.

I love work of "Eternal" and Memfis makes some good maps too, so this makes me worried about them and possibility of having new wads from them. (on top of war and all that terrible stuff)

My Russian friends were leaving several Instagram stories delegating to Telegram. Through their words, you can read their helplessness. They are hit at by the whims of a leader who cares little for his people (or the Ukrainian people).

In war, the truth always dies first.

I confess I am curious to know the consequences of a total deprivation of Internet on the Russian youth. On the one hand, Internet is very useful to get information and share knowledge. Nevertheless, it is very much misused and it has been demonstrated many times the negative effects of social networks.

Anyway, I would not like to be in their place.

They would still have internet, which is to say "they would have russian internet" in particular... Which means the "misuse" is part and parcel of the package anyhow, and I don't expect the russian youth to suddenly become the next "ubermensch" just because they can't share pics of their food on fuckerbook...

Don't think they will completely close the internet, unless they want to go back to the stone age. Will they severely limit to what's accessible and create a Pro-Russian internet instead? (Something that's already been happening). That's the more likely scenario here.

If China agrees to help then they will likely provide and find replacements for all the tech from the western companies who're leaving them right now.

They mostly used Vk over there instead of facebook, and as far as I know they had their own version of Spotify aswell.

The underlying problem is that Moscow is realizing that the war is becoming increasingly unstable with all the socio-economic consequences it's having.

The proposal to China is a sign of that.

So for the continuation of the war it will very much depend on what China will decide next.

Two Scenarios:

1. China agrees Russia's proposal --> A Russian + Chinese economic bloc forms, with China providing the necessary means.

   The war in Ukraine continues.

2. China declines Russia's proposal (to evade Western sanctions in turn).

The war is clearly not sustainable due to the heavy sanctions and the economic burden so Putin agrees to hold talks with Zelensky.

A process which was started by first sending the underdogs to the negotiating table in Belarus, after that it was the deputy ministers in Turkey who went.

With each meeting more and more higher up's on the ladder are being sent and eventually that could mean that Putin might sit down with Zelensky.

However, that still doesn't mean that peace is guaranteed, but it's a more hopeful scenario.
