Known lost WADs of our history?

Warning to all: I don't think these maps had any meaningful real (as in, versus humans) playtesting. If I recall correctly, most of my testing was done in the DOS Legacy-based CajunBot, ZDoom's equivalent, and Skulltag (as mentioned in the textfile). They're probably really bad, but at the time I was playing a bunch of UT99 and Q3A on friends' computers and kinda thought DM maps might be fun to do? I did make like half a dozen more, unrelated to Murderous Intent, but they're lost to the aether on an old computer I haven't had for years; I was too broke to afford backup storage media, alas.

As for idgames upload; I'm not against for preservation's sake, even if these maps aren't likely to be very good at all.

I've found & uploaded another SP wad missing from /idgames, this time a 9 level episode from 1995 for Doom 1: Eye of the Beholder by Jon Landis. Interestingly its Doom 2 sequel is already there.

It's levels are pretty much typical mid-90s, except the author is extremely fond of inescapable death traps. It's also notable for most of its music being composed by the author himself, and having a custom enemy.

Maybe upload it to doomshack.org?

In march 2019, @kmxexiirequested Torment.wad by Karl Jackson (member of Degrees Centigrade) in this post, but no one seems to have answered.

I don’t know if it could be considered lost, but It seems to be a rare and very hard to find level, since it’s not available anywhere on the net.

As described in that post, Torment.wad is mentioned by Jackson himself in the text file of another wad by Degrees Centigrade, Terror.wad.

The level is large but the gameplay, given the size of the level, suffers from the lack of monsters (301 HMP and 347 UV) and there are many empty spaces, in my opinion of course.

I was able to find this level only in a cd sometime ago.

Two other wads by Degrees Centigrade are still lost: Oneway2.wad and tun1.wad

Kama Sutra 2, the sequel to the iconic megawad, it had 10 completed maps out of 32, but was never finished nor released.

Just a note, there were more than 10 levels completed. Or at least more than 10 listed on the site with screenshots.

Would be curious if someone has compiled a megapost of what lost WADs have been brought up here and which ones have been found, if any.

WRT pl2, I dunno if this has been pointed out, but if you take a look at the old pl2 website on archive.org, it has a whole bunch of maps and demos archived: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.doomworld.com/metabolist/*. Some of these are likely early versions of Metabolist pl2 maps, others not sure. I had also tracked down all the different URLs I was able to discover for the pl2/Metabolist websites, but think only the above has demos/WADs. Maybe these are already covered by Szymanski's or Grazza's posts.

For other stuff I don't think anyone has mentioned:

Doomworld Speedmapping Compilation #11. A strange missing link in the Doomworld Speedmapping Session series. It isn't even mentioned on the old speedmapping page: https://web.archive.org/web/20160826043630/https://www.doomworld.com/speedmapping/. What happened? :D

The Wiki says it was skipped.

The RDC (Russian speedmapping) compilations: I found discussion in the trying to find a WAD thread, but this link seems to have died: https://www.mediafire.com/file/broqzxqtee7ucuj/RDC-Speedmaps.zip/file (https://www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2443012). Anyone happen to have that? It seems like it might contain all of them.

@Chainie Do you happen to still have this file?

On the obscure side, but as I was searching for winter WADs, I found these WADs by Ed Cripps: Red Christmas 2000 and 2001. However, the txt mention that Red Christmas 1999 also existed and it doesn't seem to be on the archive. Per the Doom Wiki, there's another missing WAD called Mountain Deathmatch 2 that is also missing for Ed Cripps.

I managed to find download links to those wads, but they're sadly broken. Maybe @Ed still has them somehow?

Oh, I feel like I found that at some point but forgot about it. Still, I wonder if anyone has any more context on why it was skipped. :D

Can you provide download links to the WADs, even if broken? I couldn't find any I think. Oh, I suppose maybe you mean https://web.archive.org/web/20010414082029/http://edspage.doomcenter.com/doom.html. Just found it, shame those aren't working there.

It'll be released when Gusta's happy with it from what I can tell, I'm not sure he has much time to work on it.

I have beta5 (dated 14th January 2007 and presumably the most recent at the time of the Prague LAN in Feb 2007), which had 17 levels. Some years ago Gusta mentioned having about 28 levels around that time. I don't know how accurate that was, but there were probably some that weren't yet at beta stage.

4shockblast: yes, the file I posted was everything PL2-related from the metabolist site you mention. Look inside the files: there is a fullish megawad, a variety of beta versions and resources, and some demos too.

Yup, it looks like someone had also posted an archived FTP with all that stuff a couple pages ago, seems Plutonia 2 old stuff is still pretty well archived between everyone, heh. I imagine some may be interested in the archived website URLs too from my post. :)

The Cyberdreams sequel: (Insomnia).

If one was doing a MIDI pack for Cyberdreams, one could do a recreation of the screenshots of the unreleased sequel. Basically, a similar extra map situation that happened with Revolution's MIDI pack.

Maybe it is better to ask @Gusta for permission to release the demo since he's still around in the forum.

Maybe one could make a DoomWiki page on every Plutonia 2 Beta release we got

Just a "Development" section on the main Plutonia 2 page would be largely more than enough. Development versions of completed projects are not considered notable enough for their own separate pages; the wiki has other things to do with higher priority, such as other, different projects that don't have a page yet.

If we're drifting into "projects that were announced and then disappeared", there are a few noteworthy ones.

Hi-Tech Hell 2 was supposed to be the sequel of a more ambitious project that would be released later. Don't ask me how that works.

hth2 is a sequel for an (yet) unreleased
ZDoom wad. Featuring a storyline, dummy
                          actors, intro/conversations you can skip,
the very different kind of teleports you've
                          ever seen before... and more.

Anyway, Hi-Tech Hell 1 never happened.

Hellstorm: Dark Ascension was one of these very ambitious partial conversions from the late nineties. The Doom source code was opened, and so it was possible to make mods that included a new executable with more stuff in it! More monsters, more weapons, more effects... Of all such projects, only Caverns of Darkness saw the light of day. What happened instead was a decoupling of engines and mod projects, with some engines (ZDoom, EDGE, Legacy, etc.) moving ahead with more and more editing features and mod projects getting built around an existing port. That was a much more future-proof solution, so it's for the best. Anyway, if I bring up Hellstorm, it's because of its historical importance: just go take a look at its bestiary. Notice anything familiar? Yes, this was the debut of Amuscaria's spriting career. Those sprite edits ended up getting included in the Demon Eclipse resource files, even if left unused (a secret Hellstorm-themed level was planned as an Easter egg); and from there they'd find their way to other ZDoom projects. Some of them, like the nightmare and archon even got fancy redesigns at some point.

Speaking of abandoned, ambitious projects with their own custom engine, there's another one that has historical relevance: that's right, the Eternity TC! While the TC project eventually died, the custom engine soldiered on, eventually shedding off all the custom Eternity TC content that had been added to focus on being a general-purpose Doom source port instead.

I'm going to pretend Mordeth's daughter is named Meredith.

Like dusted's pandemonia and many others

Psychophobia - Episode 3: the Psychophobia mod is clearly an enhanced remake of both the Bloodpack & Zbloodpack MegaWADs (both of which aren't to be confused with the ZBlood project). Out of the original levels of the original Bloodpack/ZBloodpack remade for Psychophobia, only two episodes were ever released with the third one only having a demo ever released.

I always hated Psychophobia because of it's drab headache inducing textures and level design but I love zbloodpack better

Wow. I had this thread bookmarked and completely forgot about it. Found it again by accident.

Went to look at https://risen3d.drdteam.org/maps.htm on the first page.

I had a Risen3D folder on an old hard drive and compared files. Found some sitters/abbs maps that aren't listed there.

I have multiple versions of most of them. These are the latest ones. The numbering system may be mine, to keep them straight.

Risen Egypt is not the same as Hell on Egypt, unless it was completely thrown out and re-done.

Risen_Egypt_1.5.rar - some nice textures in there.

MainframeComplex_2.1a.rar

RocketBase-v2.2.07.rar

The_Aztec_1.5.rar - also nice textures.

Welcome_Hell_1.5a.rar

Some other maps I don't know who they belong to.

An odd version of Vrack2

Vrack2BIGGESTever.zip

An earlier version of forest32 on the archives

forest.zip

And a file with no identifiers.

pillboxx.zip

Also, the Risen3D page says you need Hawkwind's addon to play Caverns of Darkness.

Don't know if this is still valid or even if it works.

COD_Addon-v2.2.05.rar

Hope these are useful.

Edit: All the rar files were self-extracting rar executables. Re-named them. I wouldn't want to click on an exe either.

The four cut maps planned for TNT Evilution that were submitted during development and rejected due to being too large to run on the computers of the day, something I recently started to write awhile ago. Out of the four possible map entries, only two maps are known to have been planned during TNT Evilution's development, those maps being No Mercy by the Casali brothers and Datasquid by Bill Bessette, the other two maps are likely lost to history.

I tried to PM both @Gusta and @Metabolist regarding the cut Plutonia 2 content but neither officially responded or are not interested in talking about it. I guess the only way to actually know what maps were released and what maps got cut for Plutonia 2 is to take screenshots of the maps in Doom Builder or other level editors.

Metabolism literally has not been around Doom community since 2004 (and not on Doomworld for even longer) so I have no idea why you tried contacting him. Vincent "Peroxyd" Catalaa would be about as safe a bet as Gusta at least but I have no idea what happened to his account and it might require some effort to track him down

This weird custom monster WAD called "enemies.wad" by Monkey_123, I don't have much to say, I mean just look at it.

I don't think it was ever released, nor does it seem to be findable anywhere.
