Guess the Map! (20th edition, have some hint fireworks)

Missed it? Probably not, but if you did, you missed it. And now it's back on the start of the new month. It's about guessing maps from automap screenshots! The amount of screenshots has been expanded to only 20, we're probably not going to do 25 anymore but that's fine since we are indeed running out of wads. It's still somewhat short and they are all Doom and Doom II wads this time. Difficulty will get slightly tougher each image.

 

Important notes:

 

- Answers MUST be hidden in spoilers, no exceptions. If you don't use the spoiler option, your guesses won't count.

- You may resort to the search bar, web pages, or whatever assistance in case you're not 100% sure of the wad and/or slot but feel like you've seen the map before.

- And for this edition, see if you can find the theme that I sneakily placed in here (doesn't apply to all 20 maps though)

An early-game level that's short with a cute middle structure.

This level does debut a monster from your nightmares.

The SE area has one surprise trap with hitscanners, but due to this being an early game map, it's not as bad as others

Tilt the entire layout a different way and you're probably going to see quite some familiarity.

Even in the most congested of spaces here, there's going to be hitscanners teleporting.

Actually getting to the exit is a strange case of going around trees while staying on a ledge.

The start of this level is just brutal for pistol start due to a cyberdemon right next to you where the weapons are.

This has a lot of Plutonia aesthetic, but isn't a part of anything Plutonia. Maybe next time.

The exit teleporter has cacodemons ambushing you there.

There's even a secret BFG there which involves ledge hugging.

The middle area is clearly an enhanced version of a classic boss map, one you revisit several times.

Since it is enhanced, you certainly can expect more than one spider mastermind.

This level appeared in two megawads, in one of them the author is a guest mapper but this is the map from the other one.

There's a secret in the water hub. Find the different torch!

The maze at the top is deliberately designed to be perplexing.

The area at the east side (not the maze) is supposed to represent an asylum. Fitting considering what this level is supposed to do.

You not only have to go through every toe to get to the exit, but you must keep on your toes too.

This wasn't in the previous Doom 1 version of the wad.

The challenging valley at the beginning is basically the testament in this last level of a small Doom II set.

This is one of two maps in this wad that had Castlevania music.

A level where you can freely roam just about anywhere on the outside

It's just full of Hellgrowth, everywhere. But I appreciate the nonlinearity after a while.

This starts the second string of slaughtermaps in a relatively small set after a death exit (though small is an understatement, this level will have plenty to keep you going)

Most likely seems to have been inspired by Sunder MAP11, due to the texturing. But smaller.

Uses a track from Requiem.

When I see this gimmick concept, I admit I think of HR MAP29 and the demons behind the starting point too.

Those diamonds/circles on the east side are barriers that open with each switch you find here.

The start of an episode starter for Ultimate Doom, a number of interesting outside areas are here.

That straight corridor at the east side reminds me of the original E2M1 secret.

A more or less controversial unofficial sequel to a legendary map.

It has the same number of secrets as the map number it is an unofficial sequel to.

A hub level where you need at least three keys to get to the final boss area in the NE.

One key is actually a secret key, and there's also a random mushroom to collect too.

Have some new hint fireworks. We're going with the letter hints again and not screenshots since that didn't work out. But admittingly I think my new hints are kinda lame. Answers are going to be on the 7th and also see if you can find the theme for this edition (again not all maps shown follow the theme but most do).

It seems I get one for free this week. Thanks! I had hoped one of my maps would show up here eventually. (Also for writing the walkthrough).

It appears the theme is sequels: Doom64 is a sequel to Doom2, Memento Mori II, Community Chest 2, Poison Ivy II, The Darkening Episode 2, Hell Revealed II, etc.

And the theme was definitely sequel wads. Of course this wasn't the theme for all of these, or was it? Tried to be a little creative and also include sequels outside of the first iteration's wad file (like Poison Ivy II being in Speed of Doom when the original was in Claustrophobia 1024) while others, like Eternally Yours being a non-numbered sequel to the Reverie trilogy for instance. Whenever the next edition comes, you probably won't expect it, or maybe you will, who knows?
