I can't take a screenshot in the steam version

Recommended Posts

A few months ago i have changed dosbox to ZDL in the Steam version of DOOM 2, and everything works fine except screenshots

i can't use F12, it just doesn't work

anybody knows how to enable it? I've seen that it works fine for other people, but not for me.

I would be grateful if someone could find a solution

maybe point steam to the doom executable instead of ZDL? Of course, then I'm not sure it would detect doom running if launched via ZDL

No, that shouldn't be the problem. Steam's overlay works properly even if you launch different source ports through zdl.

First of all make sure that the overlay is not turned off for Doom (right click on Doom II: Hell on Earth > properties > general > Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game).

Change the screenshot hotkey to some other button (Steam > Settings > In-game > Screenshot shortcut keys > \).

Other than that there isn't much to it. It should work.

Well lets just start anew then. Can you completely remove your ZDL setup, and craft a new one using this guide and see if that fixes the issue?

This is next to updating Steam in general.

Steam automatically updates always, and you can't opt out of it. So a rather pointless thing to suggest.

@Ordon so of note, your thread title is confused, you aren't actually running the Steam version, but you replaced it which is probably relevant. Try adding ZDL as a non-steam app instead, and likewise try restoring the local files to it's original form and launching Doom as is to verify screenshots still work that way.

If the former and latter work, it may be because the apps expected setup uses steamworks and without a launcher that the Steam client isn't expecting to hook into a deferred application, and thus cannot be used this way to run the Steam overlay.

Does the Steam overlay work at all for you? What happens when you press shift+tab ?

yeah, it works for other games but not for the replacement of the dosbox version. The shift+tab just doesn't work

At this point i would just Teamviewer in and see whatever the heck is going on because i'd have to see what you are doing.

This is no sleight to you, but from real-life experience what people say they do vs what they actually are doing are two different things and can have wildly differing outcomes.

I'd suggest what @Edward850 suggested, else i am out for the count.

okay, i figured out what to do

just pasted the screenshot from ZDL into the "screenshots" folder of DOOM 2, named it "2022-08-09_00001", copied it and added "_vr" at the end of the screens name. Then i pasted the resized version of the original screenshot into "thumbnails" folder and it works perfectly fine!

What does a "screenshot from ZDL" mean?

I thought the problem was that you couldn't take screenshots, but if you had a "screenshot from ZDL" to paste then that suggests something entirely different.
