I've never heard the term ARG, and trying to study it, I don't see how Doom could work it. Or Doom as we know it.

An "ARG" (Alternate Reality Game) doesn't necessarily have to be "scary", it just has to have outside input not within any of the Doom games.

im pretty sure OP meant as a marketing tactic like I Love Bees, which was an alternate reality game for the promotion of Halo 2.

If it were in this style, then I dont know. I love bees started as if it was completely separate from Halo.

Depends on what you mean, I've always had a soft spot for both analogue horror and ARGs and there is some real top tier stuff being produced right now due to the heightened interest in the genres, there are some absolute masterclasses out right now.

 

Obviously with popularity comes the cheap tack and the tagalongs but they can be fun too.
