Wads downloaded are always "corrupted"

Recommended Posts

I can't download any wads, because when I do and try to open them. It's always an "unknown format" or damaged. Any fix? I've tried using multiple browsers along with trying to extract it with 7-zip and even deleted my antivirus but to no avail.

Are you trying to open a .wad with 7zip?

At First I was trying to open it with Winrar, but when that didn't work I tried 7zip, but both of those don't work

I don't know why I thought I had to open it to get a pk3 file for the map, lmao thanks for helping me correct myself!

In my experience some downloaded WADs do need to be extracted (not opened, big diffence) using 7Zip or similar but most work fine from a zipped folder.

So a .wad is an archive, like a .rar or .zip. The big difference being that the files in the archive are not compressed (though .pk3s are compressed). So programs that manage downloads like WinRar and 7Zip are going to try and open them automatically. I had the same problem when getting started with Java programs. The .jar file is also an archive, so WinRar tried to open it. Hope that helps.

Nothing requires a zip file to be compressed, likewise you can have compressed wads (it is actually in the spec, though only used on the console ports). The reason why you can't open them with programs like 7zip is it has no idea what a wad file is, it's not programmed to open it. pk3s can be opened because they are literally just zip files.

Nothing to do with compression at all.

My bad. Thanks for clearing things up.
