No Rest For The Living is a seriously amazing wad

Recommended Posts

I discovered its inclusion when I gave the now-free BFG edition a download. Seriously fantastic maps. Very detailed, great use of color & architecture, and lots of fun enemy encounters. Might have gotten nominated for a Caco if it were freely released (which makes sense given its professional quality; it's a professional product!) The level design reminds me a fair bit of Quake 1's tek base levels at the beginning of each episode.

I'll probably play the levels again in GZDoom later if there's a way.

On a similar note, BFG Edition is seriously underrated. The game looks great, and I'm really enjoying playing through the Lost Episode. The overall experience is slightly more Quake II-ish compared to the original Doom 3, but it is still more Doom 3 than Quake II.

It's a shame nobody plays the multiplayer in either version of Doom 3 anymore.

About that, it did win a Cacoward in 2010.

Probably my favorite Unity port addon. Tight, not too long, great variety of combat and environments.

Don't know about GZDoom, but I suspect NRFTL should work there as well, as I got the mapset working on DSDA when I got the unity port from GOG.com. I suppose the wad file should be the same.

Whatever the case, I totally agree. I played NRFTL back when I first bought the BFG Edition for Xbox (in 2010? Or something like that) and totally enjoyed it, and still do. It's as if iD had made a professional level add-on for Doom 2 in the late 90s.

It's amazing how they managed to create such good looking levels with just the stock textures. My only regret is having played it with the boring Doom II music before the community made midi pack came out.

There is a midipack?! Instant replay.

Put nerve.wad in the same directory as your Doom II IWAD and it'll be loaded automatically and added as an episode for Doom II.

There's also a WAD floating around that has the levels ripped from the 360 release. It got spread around a little while after the 360 version got released, but it won't autoload in GZDoom. That's how I was able to play it on GZDoom even back then. I of course owned the 360 version. And I can't post it for obvious reasons.

Isn't the pwad used in the BFG Edition exactly the same as the XBLA version?

What are the differences?

I'd love to try it again solo net. I don't remember as much but I do remember the last cyber fight being a bit more spicy. If I remember correctly

Actually never played this, well if I recall I tried it on 360 but found it too hard as I'd not played Doom since PSX back then. Inspired by this thread, going to try it out, hopefully my skills are up to it this time round.
