Depends on what kind of stool you're talking about.

 

To get back to the OP, your best bet is to look at the Cacowards (and maybe the 10 Years of Doom articles if you wanna reach further back in time). What is considered the "best" will differ from person to person, but the mods and wads covered by the 'wards are nevertheless a good place to start from a quality standpoint.

Hmmmm. Brutal doom should be down in the bottom 5 for me, and Smooth doom should be in the top 5. But that's just me

I think that the first Scythe is a really good starting place. It's certainly at least one of the best.
It has a good variety and difficulty ramp up. It was really one of the first wads that gave me a good idea of what good doom could be.
Id recommend playing it through without weapon mods too.
