To add onto what joepallai said, also try:

Hell 2 Pay

Batman Doom (the single most impressive deHacked usage I have ever seen right next to Doom 4 Vanilla)

Memento Mori II (do not play the first one, the first one is cringe)

Heroes 2 (just a bunch of 90s maps brought together, some good some bad, enjoyable experience overall)

and finally the darkening 1 & 2

Requiem is a favourite of mine, well worth playing.

I actually enjoyed quite a lot of Memento Mori, but it has some stinkers for sure though(looking at you Kinetic).

Area51, DoomCity, Hellrun2, Bermuda, UAC_Dead - some favourite wads I found online back in the late 90s.

Far Side of Phobos, Phobos by Roger Ritenour, Cleimos - episodes I played within the last few years that rubbed me the right way.

Theres a ton more 90s/vanilla wads in the Big Vanilla Wad Pack!

Apart from the ones already mentioned, I would mention The Darkening E1 (released in 1998) and E2 (2000, although most naps were complete by 1999)

E2 in particular while not as exciting as modern wads in general, is surprisingly polished in terms of visuals and has tight encounter and ammo balance. In a way feels like BTSX before BTSX
