It is super good, I would say. In fact, some tracks are so good that I still have a hard time believing they are original compositions for an open-source project.

I've made some notes about the Freedoom Phase 2 tracks, maybe they're useful here :) In general, I think the soundtrack is very good. A few tracks are a bit short and repetitive, but they could for sure be saved if they were remixed and expanded. I'm sure someone eventually will do that (maybe even I'll try something myself). I would also switch some midis to other maps, some do not really fit that well.

Outstanding:

- MAP04 - Symphonic metal song with a nice melody and a slighly epic feel (almost too epic for the map).
- MAP05 - Dark and pulsing synthpop song.
- MAP13 - String-heavy rock track with a good harmonic progression. Quite short but on point.
- MAP14 - Dark symphonic synth rock song, with an excellent verse-chorus contrast. (I would maybe put it in a different map, for example MAP11.)
- MAP20 - Slightly jazzy, slow rock song with some synths and without drums. Very good music for the "night city" episode.
- MAP24 - Very atmospheric symphonic ambient-rock track with pizzicato section.
- MAP25 - One of my favourites. A warm synth intro morphs into a powerful rock/metal track with epic vibes. Perfect for an adventure map with punchy gameplay.
- MAP27 - Another favourite. Epic dark metal track with a quiet ambient begin. Very atmospheric. The variation of the second theme (with the short main melody theme) is outstanding.
- MAP28 - Driving and pulsing rock track with synths and a memorable guitar riff.
- MAP30 - Very fast-paced synthrock track. A remix of an older, a bit less "on the point" version (the map was previously much longer though).
- MAP31 - Dark electronica track with a very menacing atmosphere, perfect for the pacifist map.

Good:

- MAP01 - Midtempo synthpop song which sounds quite good to "start the action".
- MAP03 - Fast synthpop track with serious 80s vibes.
- MAP08 - Atmospheric space-rock song. Fits the map well. The guitar solo has however some weird parts.
- MAP15 - Fast-paced rock song, quite fitting for a fastpaced hitscanner-heavy level.
- MAP16 - Quiet slow-rock track, fitting for a nighttime map.
- MAP17 - Rock track, fast paced and thus fitting for the punchy map.
- MAP18 - Slow symphonic rock track with piano, another good "nighttime" music. If it wasn't for the slightly repetitive chord progression it would be in the "outstanding" category.
- MAP21 - Rock song with a heavy guitar intro and later a contrasting slow, string-heavy part. Quite cool.
- MAP23 - Choir-heavy track with heavy percussion (a remix of an older track which had organs instead of choirs). Would be outstanding if the percussion wasn't a bit repetitive.
- MAP26 - Dark, pulsing synthpop track, a bit similar in the tone to MAP05.
- MAP29 - Slightly menacing, fast-paced rock track. Even if the chord progression is repetitive, the variation with pizzicato and organ is quite well made.
- MAP32 - Slow, atmospheric synth-rock track with a long, interesting chord/theme progression. Doesn't fit the map it is in (flip it with MAP11?).

OK:

- MAP06 - Brass-rock track. Has an interesting videogamey aesthetic but sounds a bit "shallow" for me. Could for sure be reworked, is also a bit short.
- MAP09 - Guitar-heavy rock track with some synths.
- MAP12 - Brass-heavy, fast paced rock track which reminds me a bit of some of Mark Klem's work in the Memento Mori series. A little bit too repetitive, but fitting for the map.
- MAP19 - Short string-heavy track with an interesting UK garage-influenced beat, a bit piano, and quite fast-paced nature. Not bad but a little bit repetive.

A bit underwhelming (mostly because they're too short):

- MAP07. Trying to be epic too hard. Strings seem also too loud.
- MAP10. Very short and repetitive, and doesn't really fit the map which is a cavern/outdoor affair. This could however have potential if it was remixed and expanded.
- MAP11. Guitar-heavy and dissonant, with spacey synths. The idea itself is cool, but the map is very large and the track very short. Maybe a extended remix could do it? Or flip it with another midi (I would suggest MAP32).

I think I had seen the names of the midis somewhere, but don't remember where. They seem unfortunately not to be in the text file. It's possible I saw them in the forums here.

Who are the authors of Freedoom's OST? I felt like some tracks reminded me of Deadwing's work, but it might be coincidence.

The credits file of version 0.12.1 mention the following pseudonyms for music: Captain Mellow, andrewb, Ralphis, Vicious, tobester, Csabo, Hyena, Pickle Hammer, GhostlyDeath, TheMisterCat, Jute, jmickle, mogul, Blueworrior, Viscra Maelstrom, bytebeats, KevinHEZ, jupiter_ex, and BobFromReboot (some have also provided their real names). Unfortunately it's not detailed who made which tracks.

i really ought to update my track that's in this project at some point. i made map29's track a very long time ago and it could do with some restructuring and improvements.

Tracks by Picklehammer is my favourite. It have some Final Fantasy vibes in it. I wish he made more music for freedoom.

Thank you.

git clone won’t work for some reason, so I downloaded them with:

for i in $(links -source https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/tree/master/musics|grep mid|grep href|cut -d\" -f10)
  do wget https://github.com/$i
done

Then a bit of sorting in the right directories…

Darn, this does not download the midi file but an HTML file. This one is OK:

for i in $(links -source https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/tree/master/musics|grep mid|grep href|cut -d\" -f10|cut -d/ -f7)
  do wget https://github.com/freedoom/freedoom/raw/master/musics/$i
done

Thanks.

there are several really good songs, and some that aren't so great

but i feel that way about the original doom music, too.

i don't care for the slow atmospheric crap.

gimme fast paced metal-feel and i be happy.

I think that most of the music in phase 2 sounds really good. My only complaints are that, firstly, a few songs are too loud and drown out the sound effects. Maps 7, 10, and 12 in particular. Second, the title screen and level-complete songs kind of stink. Not only that, but the title is also too long to be heard in full, as the demo cuts it off. Phase 1 sounds really good as well, with the only tracks I don't like being E1M6 and the ending. The latter being so awful that my ears actually hurt listening to it.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I absolutely love the Phase 2 soundtrack (haven't played Phase 1 yet) - it makes me feel like I'm the main character in an 80s action B-movie about aliens :p

And some of the tracks are imo just mind-blowingly good! My favorite is MAP08, I think it's pretty much the perfect techbase song for how it perfectly combines the sci-fi synth parts with the haunting choirs - and of course the guitar solo rocks, too! Honestly like ax34 I think I like the soundtrack better than the original DOOM songs.

The Episode 3 ending theme absolutely slaps, it's like Doom 1's Sweet Little Dead Bunny, it starts with a nice flute melody, then it transitions to the guitar solo and it's awesome. I also like the MAP01 theme from Phase 2, it rocks! I haven't heard every single Freedoom track to rate it without bias but I chose the "OST is good" option.

The soundtrack is good, though I much prefer some of the older versions soundtrack.

D_E3M3 (i think so anyway) from freedoom 1 was so good, I sampled a few of the beats and made my own song XD

I really wonder if we'll get a remastered version of the soundtrack, like IDKFA.
We can only hope.

The old Freedoom soundtrack wasn't even original most of the time.

MAP02 was the same as Doom 2's MAP02 just with more instruments

Good thing the new Freedoom soundtrack added original musics.

Freedoom OST > Countdown to Death ... kidding... I just like the Freedoom ost very much without any comparisons.

In fact, I like it so much, that I've been practising some of the tracks main leads on my own instruments. (Mostly wind ones, like the sax)

(That said, CtD isn't awful or anything, I just don't think it fits Doom very well. Put it into Hexen or something.)

Edit: Oh, right. The soundfont used by DSDA (which I assume is the same as prboom) is a big part of the enjoyment, very tasteful soundfont, in fact. I have replaced my systems midi soundfont with it.

I've only played Phase 2, but so far every song I've heard in it is a banger. I mostly use the zzdenis SC-55 soundfont but I've also used this huge soundfont that someone posted that got deleted because it had some copyrighted samples I guess. Sounded awesome tho.

One of my favorites is the song for Phase 2 Map 2 (Filtration Tunnels), although my siilvagunner brainrot keeps expecting it to turn into a This Unstable World cover...

My personal favourite track from Freedoom is "Mists Over the Mire" by Picklehammer - MAP22's track in v0.12.1.
Sure, it's loud and might be considered "annoying", but it holds nostalgic value to me.
