Sonikkumania Posted November 3, 2022 I guess this topic has been debated like a million times.. But gonna post anyway. What is the preferred mode of gameplay in Doomworld? You like it vanilla (ice) or do you mind something that tries to change the formula? 1 Share this post Link to post
Fluuschoen Posted November 4, 2022 (edited) For me, this is the order, starting with the most preferred: vanilla/limit-removing > Boom > MBF > TC Never using mods, except DOOM CHRISTMAS - For Doom II & Final Doom, when it's Christmas holidays, but that's just a visual thing for the mood. There're a few exceptional TCs, like Mega Man 8 bit Deathmatch, Wolfenstein: Blade of Agony, Aliens: Colonial Marines, VietDOOM, Pirate Doom, Elementalism, Sonic Robo Blast 2 etc., but I almost always (like 99 percent of times) find myself playing complevel stuff. Firedust Posted November 4, 2022 I generally don't use mods at all UNLESS I find a map(set) to have super underwhelming gameplay (like Hellbound, for example) in which case I go with something random - Final Doomer, Supercharge, etc. 1 Share this post Link to post
Sonikkumania Posted November 4, 2022 I think some custom assets are always a welcomed change, may it be a new weapon or enemy. However when they start ripping modern FPS weaponry into Doom, that goes way too akward for me. I just don't consider Call of Duty styled guns suitable in Doom. 0 Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted November 4, 2022 I don’t mind custom assets, but I don’t care much for mods that try to transform Doom into a Build-engine game or worse. Total Conversions often steer too far away, but then my experience on them is mostly based on memories of 90s silliness, such as Simpsons TC or so. 2 Share this post Link to post
Thelokk Posted November 4, 2022 Maybe one dehacked monster or two, but nothing more. Doom's roster / arsenal is fine as it is. 3 Share this post Link to post

Oh, you really want me to post that picture again isn't it. 20 hours ago, Sonikkumania said: What is the preferred mode of gameplay in Doomworld? This question is trite because why ask the community what the preferred mode of play is? The preferred mode of play is the mode you prefer to play in. It almost sounds philosophical. 20 hours ago, Sonikkumania said: You like it vanilla (ice) or do you mind something that tries to change the formula? Why not both? You can also have Vanilla TC's (REKKR/HACX). I like TC's when they are standalone, and when its vanilla, i like a good megawad. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sonikkumania Posted November 4, 2022 @Redneckerz I think you're able to answer those questions yourself. I didn't join here to argue, if you think the questions are obsolete, feel free to report them. Though imo the point of discussion boards is the discussion. 8 Share this post Link to post
Captain POLAND Posted November 4, 2022 I like using Russian Overkill on slaughter maps sometimes. 1 Share this post Link to post
Wyrmwood Posted November 4, 2022 I really enjoy both. I love vanilla wads but sometimes I feel like a change. There's loads of great TCs especially if you include stuff like Hedon which is both a different game or a TC depending on your point of view. For vanilla stuff I always play both HMP and then UV with intended experience (bar little touch things like Nash gore) but Supercharge and Project Brutality can be a great way to play them again. Might be just me but sometimes my UV playthrough feels slighty easier than my HMP one due to knowing the levels but with a mod like my examples sometimes feels more challenging and unpredictable. Basically I enjoy Doom in most of its forms but I really enjoy the surprises you can get from a full or even partial TC as long as the maps are good too. 0 Share this post Link to post

TARDIS32 Posted November 4, 2022 I don't care for total conversions too much. I want my classic Doom to feel like classic Doom. I stick to vanilla, limit removing, Boom, or MBF, whatever the mapper intends. A few additions, or monster/weapon replacements are ok if done tastefully (I love Valiant, for instance). I hate stuff like Brutal Doom and all that. Obviously, Doom is Doom, regardless of how one wants to play it, and I wouldn't give someone shit because they like to play a different way than I do though. 1 Share this post Link to post

TheHambourgeois Posted November 5, 2022 Kind of depends, I am mostly a vanilla doom guy, though I do like wads with both maps and gameplay modifications (like hellforged), or maps designed to be used with gameplay modifications. Also more open to gameplay mods the further you get from doom (more open for heretic, even moreso hexen, does anyone even make vanilla strife wads?) 1 Share this post Link to post

DoomGater Posted November 5, 2022 I generally prefer vanilla. Only exception are additional player skins when playing multiplayer games (but NOT during 1on1's). Many years I preferred to be MAX (https://doomlegacy.sourceforge.net/zips/maxskin.zip) when playing Doom Legacy. Skins could help to keep the players apart (I don't like those name signs...). 1 Share this post Link to post
TheSlipgateStudios Posted November 6, 2022 I prefer Vanilla mostly, but if something catches my eye then sure, I would try it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted November 6, 2022 I tend to personally prefer vanilla, the only mod I consistently run is the Minor Sprite Fixing Project. RottingZombie Posted November 6, 2022 Vanilla / Limit Removing here. I play zdoom or boom specific wads if they seem high quality though, but don't usually mix them into my huge V/LR folder. 1 Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted November 6, 2022 i like new enemies and new props and weird dehacked stuff but i don't like platform-over-platform or obviously scripted arenas, hard to say. i think jumpwad owns. im not really that huge on new TEXTURES tbh, a lot of my own mapping takes place largely with the vanilla default wallpaper. boom/mbf21 is teh sweet spot for me 1 Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted November 6, 2022 Vanilla partial conversions are my absolute favorite. A blend of new assets and classic Doom stuff, or sometimes repurposed Doom stuff.. Love having some souped-up weapons and baddies that still feel kinda-sorta-mostly "at home" in a Doom wad! Total conversions that change absolutely everything are kind of rare, but even when I'm not a huge fan of the gameplay I'm always so impressed with the work and artistry. I still prefer stuff that is still mostly in-line with Doom, though. 8 Share this post Link to post

VoanHead Posted November 7, 2022 Tbh it depends in the mood I’m in for. I’m a man who likes to try out everything offered. But most times if I wanna play regularly I would just play w/ Spritefix mod. 0 Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted November 7, 2022 Yes it has been asked a million times, and I will give the same answer. I like good WADs. I could not possibly care less about the format or port required to play it. 4 Share this post Link to post
OpenRift Posted November 7, 2022 I think what steals my heart the most is vanilla TCs like HacX, Rekkr, Harmony, etc (see my DOS re-packs for proof lol). But I still adore more Doomy WADs, so I'm not going to pick between the two. 3 Share this post Link to post

Seems way too advanced to not consider it at least PC, for me, anyways. Required jump/crouch and heavily recommended freelook feels alienating tho (but this is subjective) : D – in this regard it's pretty far from 'vanillaesque' gameplay, and this also affects combat, that's why it's hard on my part to think about it just as a megawad. HorseJockey Posted November 7, 2022 (edited) I personally enjoy playing all sorts of things, as long as they have something in them that attracts my attention. Usually it's level architecture, so that could be a vanilla mod or TC. Inversely when I am creating things, I tend to lean hard into the TC realm of things. I really enjoy exploring new ideas with Doom as the base. Some of the levels/mods I enjoy in no particular order to give an idea Rise of the wool ball Sunlust Tangerine Nightmare Castlevania Simon's Destiny Delaware Waterlab GZDoom Exquisite Amethyst There is one wad for the life of me I can't remember the name, but the first level ends when you find a cup of earl grey tea? Its mostly blue in theme and uses the Aquatic ambiance track from Donkey Kong Country for music. The architecture in it is really great a surreal though. Vanilla gameplay for the most part. Edit: It's Swim with the Whales I think Edited November 7, 2022 by HorseJockey 0 Share this post Link to post

TC means Total Conversion - new setting, new main character etc. If it's still in the Doom universe, it's a partial conversion at best.
