Ultimate Doom Megawads and Episodes

Recommended Posts

Wowsers... everytime I think my Doom addiction has been put to rest - and it seems to reappear every couple years - I find gem threads like this.

I'll have to play some of these. Cringe looks interesting.

One of the best parts about playing these Doom wads from the 90s is that tastes in art (books, videogames, paintings, etc.) change over time.

We've decided collectively as a society that maybe some of that retro stuff from the past several decades isn't that bad after all. I remember when Super NES games were being tossed out for free when the Nintendo 64 came out. And, when people were getting rid of Doom for newer FPS games.

Cringe is a great example of a 90s Doom wad. I love playing old stuff like this. I can really feel myself going back in time with technology and gaming.

Haven't play that one yet, but the boxy designs of 90s wad makes me very nostalgic.

Check out Cleimos if you haven't already. I played it earlier this year and liked it a lot.

I guarantee that the boxy design was derided back in the day. Today, it's not that bad. In fact, it's refreshing from some of the new fangled stuff. Great maps don't need great graphics to be fun. It's the same reason I play NES games every now and then.

I'll check out Cleimos. It looks fun.

Any difference between this mediafire version (link broken) and the final idgames release?

I dunno, I'm not sure if I had both

None iirc.

Maybe some minor fixes.

Working link instead of the old MediaFire link: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/Ports/megawads/128k_ud

Jail_E1.WAD by Jail (Patrick Lebret). Found on a cd sometime ago. Episode I replacement.

Thx for sharing... It deserves more of my attention later tonight, but these are some really nice mid-90s maps. Spacious, boxy, and nonlinear.

Just went thru it... it's a neat window into the past. The boss fights at the end are fun, but you can tell the author considered the keyboard rather than mouse+keyboard as the standard.

The hell that unfolds out here (Jail_E1.WAD - E1M8) is juvenile by today's standards but I had fun.

I've been thinking for a while to pick 4 episode to group as a E1-E4 episode set. this thread seems my helping way to go! :p

Two wads by John Gaughan.

--Episode1.wad replaces the full Episode 1 and it is available in two versions:

the 1995 version on idgames: dm1epis1.zip, titled " John's little dream world for DOOM 1"

the 2004 version 2.0 released on the John Gaughan site: Episode1.zip , titled "Hell Doom"

--Psycho.wad replaces levels E1M1 to E2M8 ( except for E2M3: the level was corrupted and Gaughan didn't include it)

It is still available on his site as Psycho.zip

John Gaughan's official site

All the John Gaughan files are preserved on Archive.org

Thanks for the input, I have added the episodes to the file. Additionally, I have added a brief section with Heretic content.

Lost Worlds by  the Slovak Martin Hornak is a very nice, fun and well made Episode 1 replacement.

Highly recommended.

The download link includes three additional levels.

Doom: Genocide by Jacques Krige.

Genocide.wad replaces Episode 1 to Episode 3.

It is available on the Jacques Krige Official Site.

Oh god, I remember that one and personally, that's kind of an anti-recommendation. I suppose at least one can find their way around but the maps feel so big and there's lots of monsters for some reason (I'm not against that tactic if it has purpose behind it, but the bloating was hard to take

There's this other one that came out recently (/idgames release pending)

There are some new ones here to me! Thanks for posting.

Silence, Stickney, 2022ADO are some great newer ones. Also Nostaldoom is fun and Sinergy and Pcorf’s Incineration (mentioned earlier) is one of my favorite E3 replacements ever.
