esselfortium Posted November 22, 2022 Don't use Fandom, it's a mess. The Doom Wiki that's actually maintained by the community was moved to doomwiki.org over a decade ago, and the old version only still exists because Fandom actually won't allow us to have it removed because they want to keep getting ad revenue from it. 44 Share this post Link to post
BGreener Posted November 22, 2022 (edited) That’s a huuuuge reason I prefer DoomWiki.org, or nearly every alternative to a Fandom site. Scrolling down a wiki entry only to have it turn into a video ad is fairly disgusting. 13 Share this post Link to post
Mr. Freeze Posted November 22, 2022 Same with Path of Exile's official wiki transferring from Fandom to it's own wiki site. Also who doesn't use adblock in 2022? C'mon son. 14 Share this post Link to post

CFWMagic Posted November 22, 2022 (edited) 19 minutes ago, CatWithAComputer said: My adblock doesn't block those ads, idk why Try u-block origin. Make sure to check it's settings and force it to block "non-intrusive ads". If you're willing to go the extra mile, there's also an element blocker which allows you to select specific parts to block by clicking on them. You can then try and figure out the server these ads are coming from and block the entire domain. EDIT: I messed up a bit since I didn't poke u-block's settings for a while. Instead of searching in settings, go to filters and then to the "Annoyances" section. Turn on the annoyance filters in there. Edited November 22, 2022 by CFWMagic 13 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted November 22, 2022 Wikicities started going bad when they renamed themselves Wikia, and they've become downright horrible when they became Fandom. That they bought Gamepedia was terrible for game documentation, lots of good wikis have instantly become awful. Anyways, please try to never use Wikicities, Wikia, Fandom, or however they're gonna call themselves next. You know you have an unredeemable corporation when they keep changing their name to escape the bad press their previous names have accumulated... 21 Share this post Link to post
HavoX Posted November 22, 2022 Seconding uBlock Origin, although I don't seem to recall it having a setting that forces it to block those so-called "non-intrusive ads"... 4 Share this post Link to post

Ah, my bad. It's actually in filters. The section called "annoyances". This: 4 Share this post Link to post

mrthejoshmon Posted November 22, 2022 Hey man, level layouts AND suspicious hentai links? Dunno but it sounds pretty good to me. Also, last I checked your ads are normally personalised, I used to work in a place that sold lawnmowers and now I just get ads for John Deeres. 5 Share this post Link to post

My favorite experience with that so far has been when I was diagnosed with diabetes and the only place that should have had that information was the clinic and pharmacy where the diagnosis and prescriptions were handled, and my insurance company. Yet I started getting ads for finger sticks and Jenuvia and all that shit. So something in the medical industry definitely sells your private info as soon as it gets into the system. 9 Share this post Link to post

I think in my case my phone was actively tracking me and listening to my conversations (specifically I'd have with customers for work), John Deere lawnmowers, Stihl Chainsaws, hell even one of our direct competitor's ads as well as ads for golf clubs (the worst clientele we actually had so many conversations were had about them). When I started using Ebay for old Warhammer models the ads (now having something tangible to work with) changed to more relevant content like knock off bootleg "Ancient Space Elves" or "Aetherium Elves" and the like. There is no denying we are being tracked, it's kinda like a public secret, one day I'd love to mong up the algorithm on a new device just to see how outlandish it can be. 3 Share this post Link to post
Edward850 Posted November 22, 2022 (edited) 55 minutes ago, Obsidian said: I've heard theories about microphones in smartphones and computers being accessed without permission to gather data as well, which is potentially more likely. It's quite false, at least for Windows and Android. Any interaction with the microphone must either explicitly request permissions, or is always identified by the system. There's no logical backdoor for it either. What's more likely (if you want an alternative to Quasar's theory about medical information) is an incidental search, going to a page about diabetes that happens to store an off-site ad cookie that then gets tracked by the ad service, knowing you went to that page once and think you now are interested in that information. This one's quite solid because that's actually how ad stuff works, they check your local cookies of other websites you've been to, to target the resulting ads. 4 Share this post Link to post
indigotyrian Posted November 22, 2022 (edited) Edward's got the right of it. FAANG doesn't need to listen in on your every moment, so they can (truthfully!) make the claim that they don't spy on you in that way. The fact of the matter is, all the metadata and search queries and internet behavior we unknowingly litter are just as effective ways for them to learn about us. That said the only reason I haven't blocked Fandom from showing up at all in Google search results is that for a lot of games the Fandom wiki's literally the only game in town. It's complete fuckin garbage but that's just how the new internet is. 5 Share this post Link to post
act Posted November 22, 2022 Finally, a place where it's appropriate to say this; I LOATHE Fandom. Absolutely hate it. I open the page, try to scroll through it and read it, only to have the lines shift up and down rapidly as the 3.209*10^24 advertisements load in. It also makes my bad PC sound like a jet engine. 2 Share this post Link to post
