I made this map in 1996 and it's still fun and challenging :D

That's really good for '96. Out of curiosity, about how old were you when you made it? Certainly seems like the work of an adult. Hell, that looks better than a good majority of modern everyday wads to be honest.

The map looks good today, amazing for '96. I like the scenery and the corridor with barrels was really fun! I also watched the video, you mentioned in the description that you were 14 or 15 when you made that map, now that's impressive! :)

I love when a little bit of undiscovered history pops up like this. This looks seriously good for the time, you should show us the rest from back then!

Just finished your map on GZDoom, UV.

Man, you designed it in 1996???

No kidding, I felt really moved by what I've seen. Great fun map! The choice of replacing MAP05 instead of MAP01 also made the music score very fitting. THIS is a map I'd like to have designed myself!

Congrats!

Thanks! I just turned 15 so probably 14 when I started. But in my mind I'm always busy with creating games since I was 4 orso. I should have done so much more with it in my life. I did release 'Funny Furries 2 Xmas' when I was 18 :D It can also be found on Youtube.

what editor and/or tools did you use to make the map back then?

The program on the disk is named DETH. I think I used that program. I remember the program I used in the Quake 2 era was called Worldcraft.

It was so weird to play them again. While playing I started to remember it bit by bit but more as if it was a dream you try to remember. The current map 'L5' was very clear in my memory. I think I might place the rest also at a later moment.

Fun fact: In those days you only had a top view in the editor. So you had to play to see if the textures and lighting and everything else made sense.

This thing has aged pretty well!

I watched your video. I now see the flaws that I didn't see when playing myself. some blue doors open. For example in the long hallway the door on the left opens which gives you access to the plasmagun and in the end helps you to get in all those rooms. How you skipped the bridge was funny to watch ;)

 'Funny Furries 2 Xmas' when I was 18 :D

No way! I remember this game from the Windows XP era. I used to browse Caiman.us every day back then looking for free stuff to play. I always liked Holiday themed stuff so I had a lot of the games from the Xmas and Halloween sections. I still browse the website every now and then for nostalgia, but I'm afraid of viruses due to an experience I had with a 3D Pacman clone I downloaded back when George Bush was president. Ended up with a BSOD and had to buy a new copy of Windows because I had no backup.

I love the look of one-man freeware games from the 2000's. I had internet for the first time and I thought it was so incredible that there was a website full of free games that were all unique passion projects. Even the shitty ones were fun to mess around with. Back then my PC could only handle lightweight casual games and stuff from the 90's, so it was either Caiman, Reflexive (I had a keygen that could unlock any game, stealing them was just as fun as playing them), Gamehouse, Wildtangent, or Miniclip. It's really cool to run into someone from way back then.

Haha that I'm mentioning it to you and you actually know it is unbelievable :D I know some of the sites you mention and remember it was a lot fun too.

Well that was actually surprisingly good. I was expecting some weird and wacky map but this was really good. I know it has already been said in the thread but this aged very well. Here is the video. I had no problems except for a ammo shortage at the end but like you said it's a challenging map. The thumbnail is beautiful as well haha :)

You know you've got a good map when you wake up half the doomworld lol. Nicely done!

This feels like an homage to The Inmost Dens. I'll probably finish the map a bit later and then try to formulate an opinion other than: "Yep, that's a good level"

Oh... This is really 1996? I mean... I think that this map can be out nowadays from the hands of experienced mapper, I must say!

Very good quality of overall overlay, nice little details and good usage of textures that is creating very cozy atmosphere...
I am agree with some people above that some places reminds "The Inmost Dens", but one secret place even reminded me "The Crusher".

It was very pleasant experience and thank you, Doomer-comrade, for sharing this map with this community!

I wonder why slot is №5, though...

Here is a video of my playthrough, if you don't mind:

I feel as if I ever decided to open up DEU in the day that I would need a 100-page manual, a la the average CRPG to understand how to use it. Heck, I didn't even want to attempt making maps for Duke Nukem 3D and that was definitely a more user-friendly interface (there may have been other reason too, like not being allowed to be in front of a computer for hours on end and I've just become too old and cranky to care in the meantime)!

Anyways, shockingly strong map for someone just getting used to an editor. Cool fortress, cool rockiness, and cool cells. The Arachnotron ambush near the yellow key was probably the hardest part.

Here's the video I promised. I did have some foreknowledge but not enough to make a difference. And since UV was only difficulty I also got frustrated a lot. So, before my video frustration shows, let me say a few things.

For 1996 this feels amazing.  You already had a good eye back then, I do wonder what a modern map from you would look like. I would probably add it to my list of maps to play though, since this one was pretty tough one.

Hindsight 20/20 I hated the prison cell room, but I also think it was the best built part of the map. Outside of the 8 shotgun guards in yellow key, rest of the map was enjoyable.

Pain Elemental-pinky trap turned out to be underwhelming, but at low health it was enough to keep me going. I have no idea how I beat it after multiple deaths. But nice job regardless.

Also, the video cuts off in the end because I pressed the "stop recording" too early by accident.

Edit: Most importantly, it runs on Crispy Doom, despite some slimetrails.

UVMAX run. Hope this blows 14 year old you's mind.

UVMAX MAP05 in 2:56.69

Attempts: 582 (Wanted under 3mins)

Map rating: 7/10. For the time and date it was created not a bad map, nice flow, generally decent playability, minor bugs.

UVMAX Rating: 8/10. This map was either super annoying or super smooth to play through, depending on shotgun RNG. The route (Minus the final secret) flowed nicely and the secrets added rather than detracted from the run. Most resets caused due to the first pinkie being a dick, or getting oneshot in the baron room, which does knock the score down a little. Medium RNG.

Edited by Bainshie-Doom : Original video had quality of potato for some reason.
