Anyone else think Doom 1's boss fight levels are underrated?

Recommended Posts

they are not exactly good boss battles.....but they do accomplish what they set out to do which is to present challenges that at first blush may well terrify you. Of course, the vets are like 'whatever' but that's what comes from playing tons and tons of custom content for a game.

2 Barons of hell, 1 giant rocket firing guy and DIS.

Sorry to burst your bubble but E2M8 is literally the ONLY decent boss level in DooM since the other two are kinda disappointing. (Props for Ep 1 for the fake out ending though).

However, Thy Flesh Consumed's final level is actually pretty fun to play through. Might not the best best map of episode 4 but at least there's a full-on level before you fight the Mastermind a second time.

The thing about the boss fights in Doom 1 is you're already given the weapons needed to defeat the bosses with ease.  By E1M8 you have the rocket launcher.  By E2M8 you have the plasma rifle.  By E3M8 you have the BFG.  And really, the spiderdemon is easy as hell if you have a BFG.  One shot can do it if you're close enough.

I really like the first two. Sure, they aren’t hard anymore, but neither is the rest of the game. E1M8 has a really tense buildup and E2M8 is a lot of fun with the bumping midi and a ton of rockets and a monster bigger than anything you’ve seen at that point.

E3M8 is very underwhelming though.

That's only true if you play continuous and save ammo for the final maps. If you're pistol starting, you're chaingunning the barons and rocketing the cyberdemon until your patience or their HP run out. Getting the monsters to infight the spiderdemon pacifist style is the best strat for E3, the BFG strat isn't even fun, it's just a wide open slam dunk to finish the episode.

As many have already said I think it’s a matter of perspective. With thousands of hours of play and countless custom WADs under our belts in 2023, all of the original boss levels seem a bit underwhelming. Back in the mid-‘90s as a keyboard-only kid though, they were all pretty memorable and awe-inspiring at the time. These days the Icon of Sin is just an overly-simplistic face on a wall, but my younger self thought it was the coolest thing ever.
