Ani Posted February 3, 2023 At around the early and mid 2010s, I became aware of the existence of ID Software thanks to AVGN's episode on bible games where he covered Super Noah's Ark 3D. The more I watched the Nerd series, more references to Doom popped up. I shrugged it aside as a kid as I was more into platformers and 3rd person open world games. What was crazy was that when I got an N64 for christmas, my first FPS game was actually GoldenEye. It was a decent game for my taste just because of the level designs alone. But again, I was into platformers. However I still acknowledged GoldenEye's place in history. Clearly at the time, I was not ready for FPS games based on my taste at the time. Fast forward to 2020, Doom Eternal's release date came around and it happened to be around the same time as Animal Crossing Horizon. The Isabelle and Doomguy memes started to pop around in my feed and the Slayer intrigued me. I found it amusing and adorable how a strong and mute man in a M rated environment interacting with a being from a polar opposite environment. I looked into the slayer's background and was reminded what he was originally from. Out of curiosity, I bought the Xbox collector's edition of Doom 3 which had the classic games. I started the classic games and had a lot fun, it really opened my eyes and gave me FPS instincts I didn't think I would have. That was when I was officially a Doom fan. I spent 2 years and a half playing the other games and my all time favorite in the series is Doom 64. I just love how it takes a darker goth like look while maintaining the style that was established earlier. I grew very supportive for games with mod support and eventually when I ran out of games to play, I got into map making. Then I got into modding. I'm happy to be a part of this community and I hope to learn and grow more on making Doom related content. I got 2 special things in the works and once I'm done, I might use this knowledge on making mods on other things I'm into, make total conversions, etc. If you have questions, feel free to hit me up! I'd love to bring things I probably missed here. 15 Share this post Link to post
Azuris Posted February 4, 2023 Maybe you haven't "seen" it yet, but Doom has much in common in its Design with Plattformers as Mario that other First Person Shooters do not. - Straight forward Action - Puzzling Levels - Secrets to discover "Oh, there is a Plattform, how can i reach it" , could be a Sentence used in Mario World or Doom ;) 1 Share this post Link to post
Nathan Silver Posted February 4, 2023 I remember having a bit of interest in the franchise when I started to pick up my phone and download the Freedoom app when I was much more younger (probably around 2020). AVGN (James Rolfe) introduced me a bit the franchise, and the free CD game Chex Quest which I also played back in 2020, but I later forgot about its existence and went to look up other things. By the end of 2021, I tried to reach out more when I got to the modding scene, starting with a silly sound project (later cancelled because it's pretty useless now), and tried out a different one, which was also canned, and it was going to be based off the Adult Swim "short", Pibby. I became a bigger fan when I discovered the other console releases and went on to actually get through Doom 64 (which when back then I got stuck in MAP02 and couldn't figure out what to do, plus I was playing on a emulator), and the PlayStation port made me feel extremely impressed for its execution of the game's atmosphere and tone. Thus, I actually became a known person in the community (better known for the Everdoom TC, which was inspired by the PSX port and Doom 64 and the high quality sound project involving tracking sources of those versions' sound effects). Doom notably made me get into the first person shooter genre more than Halo did, and introduced me Quake as a franchise and other things that Doom introduced (such as deathmatch, programming, modding, source ports, etc). About the games, I do own the classic games, which also includes the Unity ports (though I don't play them, as I have source ports in hand), and the Doom 64 2020 re-release. I'm not really a fan of the two new games (2016 and Eternal), which in my opinion, feels like another one of those modern shooters you see nowadays, despite the reception. Doom 3? Well, that's something I should try out myself, I don't think it's bad as some people say. 1 Share this post Link to post

It's a solid shooter, although it does play quite different from the classic Doom games. 2 Share this post Link to post
