ZDoom Help Please!!!

Recommended Posts

i recently got zdoom and i think it's the greatest thing since the berserk pak (particle effects, higher res, UP AND DOWN FREELOOK, disable autoaim for crazy rocket snipage the list goes on and on....) but when i put all my wads in the zdoom folder, every time i would load doom.wad, the (ultimate) doom title screen would come up, but with the doom2 music. and when i start a new game, I would start on level 1 of doom2 but all blurry like i idclip-ed through a wall. what's wrong? i would load various wads (the ones from DooM Collectors Edition) by dragging and dropping them, is that the problem???

Also how EXACTLY do you load a wad from the console???

thank you so much, and once again, any help would be mad appreciated.

You don't.

Wads cannot be loaded from the console. You load them from the command line, like the original dos doom

Zdoom -file myfile.wad

Or from the start/run option

or you can drag and drop your PWAD onto the exe - not sure why that isn't working for you - what exactly (with file names) are you doing?

Or you can try a bunch of different front end programs to take care of WAD loading for you. It's just a matter of time before The_Experience turns up and offers you a link to his launcher, which by all accounts is very good.

Where's the King? Has he left the building?

I find it's best to make a shortcut to the ZDoom exe, and in the command line options for it I enter "zdoom.exe -iwad doom -file whatever". Then I just change the wad name to something else when I want to play something different.

Also, if your into using the console, you can use JDoom. That allows you to load wads from it's console.

sounds like your trying to drag and drop the doom.wad onto ZDoom but it keeps loadding the doom2.wad as the main one... if thats whats happening, then i donno why ZDoom dosnt see all your (Doom.wad TNT.wad) and come up asking what you want to play...

for me, i have every doom.wad, doom2.wad in dif folders and i edited the "ZDoom (my name).ini" like this on my C:\ drive... but if you just have all your Doom.wad, Doom2.wad, tnt.wad, in one folder with ZDoom then you dont have to do this

[IWADSearch.Directories]
Path=.
Path=$DOOMWADDIR
Path=$HOME
Path=$PROGDIR
Path=/Doom_ID\doom1
Path=/Doom_ID\doom2
Path=/Doom_ID\Final-Doom_TNT
Path=/Doom_ID\Final-Doom_Plutonia
Path=/Doom_ID\Heretic
Path=/Doom_ID\Hexen

now when ever i drag and drop an addon wad a lil box comes up and asks what Doom wad i want to play, and if the addon wad is for Doom2 i highlight Doom2 and click ok and it loads Doom2 and my addon just fine....

If you want to play ultimate doom, start zdoom like this: zdoom -iwad doom.wad

Sweet Prince: some of us checked off the "don't ask this again" option the first time zdoom asked us which one to use, so it doesn't do that anymore :)

yeah, i know that lil "don't ask this again" option but WHY? now its just like every other stupid port that has to have -iwad..

and i like the drag and drop (as dose the topic starter) and i can do that with wads and deh files at the same time, just highlight all the wads and deh files and drag and drop on the exe or an unmodded shortcut...

but if i make a shortcut with the -iwad doom.wad then i cant drag and drop anything, tho if i add the "-file" after any iwads and stuff (like this... zdoom.exe -iwad Doom.wad -file ) i can drag and drop wads but not deh files at the same time or at all... tho Legacy with just the -file *blank* it loads all wads and deh files... weird

so reinstall ZDoom and get that lil box back :) oh and BTW the lil box dosnt show up when you use the -iwad.. i just dont understand why ppl would get rid of it.. i have like 20 shortcuts for my PrBooms and Legacy.. but when i feel like ZDoom (most of the time) i just hit the ONE shortcut and i pick what Doom to play and im off! or i just highlight the addon wads and deh files, drag and drop them on my unmodded shortcut on my Desktop and if the addon is for Doom or Doom2, or Hexen i just hit the right one and hit ok.... couldnt be ezer

Well, you could do that, or just edit your ini and change the line that reads

queryiwad=false

to

queryiwad=true

oh cool! i thought that might be in the config but i was too lazy to check and too chicken shit to ever trun it off for fear of it never comeing back LOL

also BTW, in PrBoom you can add whatever you want to the shortcut (tho when i drag and drop it dosnt use my alt config, oh well) and then add -file_____ and drag and drop both wad and deh files.. just i guess PrBoom dosnt need a -deh com.. or ZDoom if theres no -iwad -file or -deh coms it'll load everything

Enjay, I'm so sorry !!!

I have seen this very late.

Anyway here comes what everyone is expecting:

kingdoom.tk :)

...and the ZDoom feature for the [IWADSearch.Directories] is cool, but
KDX has this since August 2002 and it works much faster, because KDX
is using a hirachical cache system where all PWAD locations will be
stored. Of course it does also a search on the harddrive if the PWAD
is not found in the cache and adds it then. You will find the
searchpath.cfg in the KDX \sys folder, also reachable if you
right-click the KDX task-bar icon -> Misc Config -> Searchpath Config

"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2_dm_0-z"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2_dm_mega"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2_dm_ports"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2_sp_0-z"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\Doom2_sp_mega"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom2_sp_ports"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\kingdoom_mega"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\ROCKET_DOOM2_DM"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\DOOM2_SP_DLW"
"doom2.wad","$appdir\pwad\DOOM2_TC"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom_dm_0-z"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom_dm_mega"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom_sp_0-Z"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\doom_sp_mega"
"doom.wad","$appdir\pwad\DOOM_SP_DLW"
"hexen.wad","$appdir\pwad\hexen"
"hexen.wad","$appdir\pwad\hexen_dm_0-z"
"hexen.wad","$appdir\pwad\hexen_dm_mega"
"hexen.wad","$appdir\pwad\hexen_sp_0-z"
"hexen.wad","$appdir\pwad\hexen_sp_mega"
"heretic.wad","$appdir\pwad\heretic"
"heretic.wad","$appdir\pwad\heretic_dm_0-z"
"heretic.wad","$appdir\pwad\heretic_dm_mega"
"heretic.wad","$appdir\pwad\heretic_sp_0-z"
"heretic.wad","$appdir\pwad\heretic_sp_mega"
"tnt.wad","$appdir\pwad\tnt"
"plutonia.wad","$appdir\pwad\plutonia"

FYI: If a PWAD is in the cache, it takes less than a second to
find it out of over 7000 WAD's (=4.5 GB) on my system which is
only 450 MHz

And for this drag'n drop thing: You can also drag'n drop files
to the KDX main screen, which means ALL ports launched with
KDX automatically become this drag'n drop feature :)

If you install the KDX "Send To" addon, you can also send any
WAD, DEH, LMP, whatever-doom-related-file with just the context
menu within Windows to KDX

KDX has also a drag'n drop workbench, all files you put in are
automatically saved as recent file list when you close the
workbench window + you can save it in the database a selection.

Last but not least all savegames in dependence of all files you
drag'n drop, send to, or load in any other way with KDX will be
stored, you don't have to worry about or copy them by hand.
in any other way

S'okay - keep 'em waiting.

Makes for a bigger entrance.

Showmanship, that's what we need. :-)
