Doom 30th Anniversary Gold Floppy

Recommended Posts

For those outside of the UK:image.png.99af9a6145d58b16fa90bd2098f26793.png(I would have taken a screenshot of the page itself, but it is formatted HORRIBLY and requires you to scroll multiple screens worth of awful HTML/CSS just to get short spurts of meaningful info. Modern web and UX design is... not in a good place. I'm actually not convinced it loaded correctly, it's probably one of those websites that thinks anything running an OS other than Windows or MacOS is a mobile device, as the page I was served was obviously designed for mobile, everything is extremely horizontally stretched which wouldn't be an issue on a squished, vertically-oriented mobile display, and it has what terminally hip UI designers like to call a "hamburger" menu.)

The problem is the OP posted the mobile link. Here is the correct one.

https://www.game.co.uk/en/doom-30th-anniversary-limited-replica-floppy-disk-2895703

It's also not the original floppies. The original was 1.1, not 1.2.

I think it's cool for what it is. They could have done something much more disgraceful to Doom's history, like a "gold replica" Doom... NES cartridge, or a web port of shareware Doom 1... that was entirely recreated from scratch in Javascript and plays awfully. Stuff of similar vein to both things I mentioned has happened in the past with other games before, where the developer/publisher of the game is somehow clueless about their own history. So I can appreciate stuff like this, because I know it could be much worse lol.

Here’s a pic of it on the display stand.

I think it’s ok for the price.

No doubt something of outrageous cost for the 30th will be announced as time goes on.

I like it. If it was being done by ID software, I'd be pretty tempted, but this is just some UK game company of some sort?

It is improbable that id are involved in any merchandising decisions whatsoever. Their corporate overloards will be calling the shots. This will be "officially licensed" in the sense that someone at MS gave the go ahead, otherwise these guys would get nuked for trademark infringement.

So it's not even a real floppy disk with Doom on it and just sits on a stand to act as a pseudo gold-plated dust collector? Kind of lame, honestly.

It honestly looks more like cardboard to me.

That doesn't look like gold or even gold-plated. If it were it wouldn't be 20 pounds. This looks like a plastic tchotchke not really worth anything.

Pounds, not euros.

I guess it is some sort of Spray with a small amount of Gold in it.

Imo it would be actually more fun if they sell working Floppies :)

No Gold, just official Floppies with Doom in it.

It's ugly, gaudy, an incomplete set, and isn't even a real floppy!

I hope it flops.

Thanks for sharing though, it's cool to see what's coming out, I just hope the rest of the 30th anniversary stuff is cooler.
