Has anyone ever asked Phileosophos to release the source code to Wadauthor? Or at least release that updated version like he was going to but apparently forgot (remembering that instead, he uploaded the same version as before but with a new helpfile).

Heh.

You can add my name to a "petition" to John Williston, asking for that updated version. I'll pay him for it too.

Ditto. But I can't seem to raise him. I'll try emailing him again.

I emailed him a couple of weeks ago. He says he's still working on a new version and hopefully we'll see something soon.

I have e-mailed him 5 times but with no reply as yet :/

[EDIT]

That's very kind of you. Please do pass this along to the folks at the
Doomworld forums when your schedule permits. First, let me apologize to
everybody for raising false hopes. When I started working on the WadAuthor
code base last year--hard to believe it's been that long!--I thought I
would finally have the time to put out the next release. Unfortunately, one
of my company's clients started sucking up my time, and since then my life
has been the long death-march that is writing a dissertation.

Second, the release is not abandoned. I will provide the community with at
least one more release of the program (probably more to fix the inevitable
bugs in the new code). But I simply must get my dissertation completed so
that I can defend it. My committee chair tells me that I still seem to be
on track to defend in April or May of this year. That's only a couple of
months away. I know it's a complete pain in the ass to wait that long, but
I just don't think I can work on it until my defense is completed. We'll
see. Maybe I can grab a few minutes here and there. Right now I'm having
trouble just finding time for luxuries like sleep.

Third, I greatly appreciate all the kind words--and even the not so kind
words from some folk (grin)--as they make me believe that WadAuthor has
really been a Good Thing™ for lots of people. Keep that DOOM engine stuff
going, and remember: good things come to those who wait... er... and don't
shoot the poor shareware author.

John

Hiya.

Good enough for me. :) I'm a pretty patient guy, so another 8 months give or take is ok. :)

I'm particularily looking forward to two features: Bigger/more Zooming, and being able to see a LOT of textures at once. :) If I get those two, I'll be happier than a bucket of clams! (...and everybody knows that clams are the happiest things in the world...let along a whole *bucket* of 'em! Whoo-Hoo!)

Hopefully the new version will be able to auto-align custom textures and won't crash all the time when accidentally copy-and-pasting a free vertex. (that's what I'd like to see from it)

What I do is to select the first sidedef of those to be aligned, and assign it a DooM/2 texture with the same width as the custom texture. Then align the sidedefs in the normal way. Then re-assign the first texture to the custom one. However, I agree that it would be easier to be able to auto-align custom textures.

Yes, that can be a huge pain in the butt-hocks.
