princetontiger Posted February 26 (edited) Hey all, I'm trying to play Earth... but, the lighting is all messed up. There's many parts of each map that are too dark. Does anyone know how to fix this? I've toggled different gamma and brightness levels, but no dice. My guess is because the wad is old (1998), I need to do something else. https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Earth_(WAD) 0 Share this post Link to post
princetontiger Posted February 26 I'm using the latest GZDoom on macOS 0 Share this post Link to post
Andromeda Posted February 27 I think that's just how it is, that wad has a fair number of very dark areas. 2 Share this post Link to post
Hitherto Posted February 27 It is intended by design. Under earth should be dark, scary and puzzly) You can use your pistol as flashlight. 0 Share this post Link to post

Try to switch to software mode or play on Chocolate Doom if you want an authentic view of how it was first conceived at the time. Edited February 27 by Noiser 0 Share this post Link to post
Ragu Posted February 27 I would say that if you don't like bumping around aimlessly in pitch darkness with no automap, that you shouldn't be playing Roger Ritenour WADs. In fact, you probably shouldn't unless you're a real freak for experimental design, who doesn't really care if it "works" or if it's "fun". 1 Share this post Link to post
pantheon Posted February 27 Woof has a "level brightness" feature that sounds perfect for this. Essentially, when you crank it up all the way, it's like having the light amp powerup on. Of course there's intermediate levels too. It's not gamma, it won't make anything washed out. Worth a shot! 1 Share this post Link to post

Nice recommendation, unfortunately I'm on a mac... 0 Share this post Link to post

There are probably similar mods for GZDoom; DarkDoomZ lets you make maps darker, but I don't remember if it lets you reverse the effect and make levels brighter. Also, if you're using the hardware renderer, check the different sector light modes available in the hardware renderer settings. "Software" and "vanilla" are the closest the software rendering, while most of the others are significantly brighter in dark areas. 2 Share this post Link to post
