Buildings in a sea of blood/lava/etc.

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I'm looking for maps that have buildings in a hazardous sea, with traversal based on teleporting from one building to another, raising catwalks, etc. I recently replayed "Gotcha" and really enjoyed this open design, which reminds me of "Limbo" but on a larger scale. Any suggestions for maps in this style from any Doom-engine game (or any other old FPS) appreciated!

Off the top of my head, Alien Vendetta Map05: Crimson Tide is excellent. It offers the ability to walk around the entire playable area to look for secrets. It's pretty fun playing around in the blood around the main building.

Doom 2 the way ID did MAP12 is surrounded by a sea of muddy waters.

Also MAP22 from the same wad have a Gotcha-like style, with a fortress of sorts in the middle of a lava lake.

E4M7 of Deathless, 'Sea of Entrails' surely counts.

I believe there is a map in Revilution that is similar too, I had a blast playtesting it way back in the day. I don't know how much it changed since, though.

This sounds a lot like one section in Arch-tek Map 02, though Map 03 should probably be counted as well. That last demonic tech structure is just amazing!

MAP04 of Three's a Crowd could be another example. A part of the hazardous sea is "walkable", but some buildings can only entered via teleports and jumps. Has a bit of Mt. Erebus feeling, but most buildings are in the lava lake, not on a big island.

Romero's Tech Gone Bad is another one, whole level is surrounded by lava and has more than a few drops into nukage.

Thanks everyone. I haven't played most of these and will check them out!
