I play through /idgames/levels/doom2 ...again

Recommended Posts

Back in 2009 I started playing through the /idgames/levels/doom2 directory chronologically (except /deathmatch and /Ports) based on wad date (not upload date), and after several years I made it up to wads with a 2007 date. So now I figure why not do it again from the beginning, but this time on video?

It's a one-handed keyboard / half-keyboard. I needed something smaller to use on my lap with the trackball and was pleasantly surprised these keyboards exist.

Ah, neat! I'll have to search NewEgg and see what I can find. And for the videos, I'll have to watch them when I get home. Thanks for the reply!

Tod of death, do you know what the name of the music that starts playing 1:35:40 into episode 3 is? (https://youtu.be/g1gpfDLgOaA?t=5740) I found it extremely depressing, had to skip to the end of that map after about ten minutes of it.

Good series btw. I like when there are random cyberdemons and bizarre progression.

lol I love that song, apparently it's called "Trinity Pit" from the game "Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter". The random cybers and bizarre progression are my favourite parts. Least favourite parts are when the mapper doesn't give me an effing weapon... I played multiple wads like that yesterday.

btw here's a new batch:

I'm only on episode 13, got a lot of idgames to catch up on

Something I've kinda been wondering: if/when you get to the earliest full megawads (like memento mori I guess) will you play through it the same as every other wad, or will you skip it because you've played it before?

13 is a lot, thanks for watching. Ep15 is where I get the autohotkey scripts working. The newer episodes are probably a bit better than the older ones, but I still don't have much of a personality lol. For the megawads with 15+ maps, I'm skipping them and will circle back around to them if I finish the rest (I won't).

TOD

In your episode 200 you mention how you'd like to convert midis to audio files. You can do this with reaper... but only on OSX, because OSX lets you loads its equivalent of the GM wavetable as a VST. You could do something similar on windows (including batch rendering multiple clips, which is so useful) but you'd have to use some weird free soundfont player VST, which I'm 99% wouldn't be an acceptable solution to you :/

You can also export midi as audio with FL studio, but you'd have to do the midis one at a time, and tbh the result is very slightly different to GM playback. And FL isn't free.

Congrats on getting to 200. I'm hoping to catch up (a bit) during your hiatus.

I decided against the hiatus and continued making progress on the list:

- 938 hours logged

- 292 videos in 292 days

- loaded 1858 wads (out of 3984)

- now in January 1997

Even though I "only" just made it into 1997, I'm nearly half way through the entire list. The halfway point is at the end of April 1997. Just goes to show how many vanilla wads there are in the mid 90's. This is the latest upload:
