ECWolf vanilla levels with floor/ceiling textures?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone made a vanilla map pack that adds floor and ceiling textures to the stock levels?

Just got ECWolf and beat episode 1, man I've been spoiled by Doom too much, those untextured flats are very hard to look at LOL.

Perhaps something like this is what you’re looking for? There’s one for SOD too and some additional level packs. LZWolf is a fork of ECWolf and may be required for this mod to work.

Yeah, I want _just_ floor and ceiling textures and nothing else. Thought I could save time and just play, assuming someone's already made such a thing. Insert Thanos "fine I'll do it myself", I guess. :S

Thanks for the link to the mod though - it's a good reference for how to actually do it (as I have zero experience with Wolf3D modding)

Wolfenstein 3D Cosmetic Upgrade for ECWolf gives the game an audiovisual upgrade without delving into the realm of silly 2048x2048 HD textures. It might be going a little too far for some, though?

I couldn't find anything on how to run that mod, do you know how to get it working?

I'm kind of curious about this myself. I honestly haven't dinked around with Wolfenstein 3D that much, aside from ECWolf. And I think the last few actual mods I played for it used their own .bat, or were completely separate from using Wolf files, I mean it's probably been close to 20 years since I've played any custom wolf content. So I'm running up against a wall. From the forum post, you need the most recent version of LZWolf to run it, which... the link provided is dead, and considering that post was from 2016 didn't surprise me. But I did find the most recent version, from 2020, on moddb. And I can run Wolf using the LZWolf.exe, I unzipped it in my gog Wolfenstein 3D folder, runs fine just clicking on the .exe.

I've unzipped the .pk3 files for Wolf CU, the wolfcu_20.pk3 and the wolfcu-discipline.pk3 into the same folder. When I create a shortcut to lzwolf.exe and add --file wolfcu_20.pk3 to the target line, I get a command prompt saying that an error has occurred. When I just add --wolfcu-discipline.pk3 to the target, it loads with the discipline title screen, and it starts the new map, so it's loading discipline, but it's completely black except for the light fixtures, and of course I get shot by the guards.

So yeah, I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing wrong. Well, and I've also tried it from the Windows command prompt, and I can run lzwolf just fine that way, but when I try to run it with --file wolfcu20.pk3, I get a "could not stat wolfcu20.pk3 access is denied" error in the prompt, while running as an admin. So yeah, I'm probably doing something completely wrong, and it's probably relatively simple.

But some help would be appreciated.

Drag and drop onto ecwolf.exe, exactly how you would the average GZDoom or Eternity mod.

I appreciate the suggestion, but that was actually the first thing I tried, which I guess I didn't mention. So I figured Wolfenstein might work a bit differently than say GZDoom, so that's why I started futzing around with creating a shortcut and using the command prompt. And I get the same pop-up command prompt regardless of whether it's lzwolf or ecwolf, either dragging and dropping, or modifying the target:

Please use --console or start from command prompt to see error messages.

An error has occured* (press enter to dismiss)

*this is how occurred is spelled in the message.

So yeah, I'm kind of at a loss. This is the ecwolf build from 2/2/23, and the lzwolf build from 9/16/20, both throwing up the same error message.

Well, and I just added the --console to the target out of curiosity, and this is what came up, it's kind of long so I'll spoiler it:

So yeah, if you have any idea, I would really appreciate any advice. I've tried redownloading the file from that link, but I get the same results, so I don't know if the file itself is bad or what. I assume it's on my end.

It worked just fine for me, whether I loaded up the regular CU version or the Discipline version. I'm using LZWolf 1.3.99999999, x64 build.

Odd, same build I'm using. So it must be on my end.

I have Wolfenstein on Steam, so maybe however you've got your GOG version set up could be causing it? You could try seeing if the Steam version works if you have it there as well.

Alternatively, if you want to make them their own shortcuts:

Wolfenstein 3D
"lzwolf.exe --data wl6 -file wolfcu_20.pk3 wolfcu-discipline.pk3"

Spear of Destiny

"lzwolf.exe --data sod -file wolfcu_20.pk3 wolfcu-discipline.pk3"

Try the latest LZWolf build.

LInuxwolf didn't version his builds, so you're looking for a 2/3/2023 build at the time of this writing.

Okay, yeah that did it. I got the build I had off of moddb, which I was assuming was the latest build. It's the exact same file name as the version on the LZWolf page on Wolf3D.net, which was probably causing my confusion. But yeah, I just tried the version from Wolf3D.net and dragging the .pk3('s) onto it worked like a charm, so thank you very much for figuring out my issue! I appreciate it.

Still wondering why dragging it onto the ECWolf build didn't work, but oh well. Thanks again!

Edit: Although, oddly enough, I did download the Cosmetic Upgrade from the mediafire link on this page: https://wl6.fandom.com/wiki/Wolfenstein_Cosmetic_Upgrade and that file worked. However it was also 30mb, instead of the 6.5mb file linked here: http://dhw.wolfenstein3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=7566, and the 30mb file worked with the older version of LZWolf that I was using. So yeah, kind of weird.

It did, in so far as it tried to load the mod.  However that mod uses LZWolf features not yet in ECWolf so it produced an error.

It's been over a year and it's a considerable necro, but for a good reason:

Since I'm currently also about to play ECWolf again and wanted floor/ceiling textures as well, I took the time to create a pack that actually works and does nothing else than what it's supposed to do. I've used the Cosmetic Upgrade (CU) stuff as a base, but only as far as the textures themselves are concerned. The MAPINFO files are taken from ECWolf v1.4.1 and the only thing I added were defaultfloor/defaultceiling entries. Also, all used textures have been converted back to the original Wolf3D palette (CU used a custom one).

There were no CU definitions available for Return to Danger and Ultimate Challenge, so I created some by myself, based on the following scheme:

- Ceiling textures were chosen based on the original color

- Floor textures remain the same for each episode/segment

Download #1 (lowres 64x64, PK3, 49 KB)

Download #2 (highres 128x128, PK3, 122 KB)

Games supported:

- Wolfenstein 3D (official six campaigns)

- Spear of Destiny

- SoD Mission #2: Return to Danger

- SoD Mission #3: Ultimate Challenge

I hope this is what Nash and possibly others have been looking for. Again, this was made for ECWolf v1.4.1 and I cannot guarantee it will work with earlier versions of even other ports.

Nice. I've uninstalled the game a long time ago but will keep this pack in mind

Updated both files since a couple of textures had been poorly chosen or converted.

*UPDATE Sep 11, 2024*

Uploaded all-new versions which remain a lot closer to the original colors. Less variety in texturing, but more faithful in general.
