A2Rob Posted May 12 (edited) (This thread is a continuation of the Scythe themed community project "Scythe: Re-sharpened". EPICALLL has agreed to let me re-vamp the overall rule set and general themes for the project, leaving things a bit more open ended for mappers.) Scythe turned 20 recently. Let's celebrate by making some maps in the spirit of Erik Alms' work. <<<EPISODE 1 BETA DOWNLOAD>>> --RULES AND GUIDELINES-- Target compatibility is Doom 2 in Boom format (Complevel 9) Test your maps in an appropriate source-port (DSDA-Doom, PrBoom+, or Eternity) Don't use ZDOOM. The goal of this project is to make nice, short, punchy maps. Emphasis on SHORT. Maps should only take 3 - 5 minutes to beat, 7 - 8 minutes max. I've re-purposed my map from the previous iteration of this project, which can be used as a frame of reference for how long your map should be. (download here) Or just play any level from the Scythe series. Custom midis are encouraged, just be sure to credit the composer. Maps should have difficulty settings and coop starts implemented. Maps should be designed for pistol starts. When submitting your map, use this template below... Map name Author Midi title and composer Source port used Difficulties Coop starts A short description of your map (this is optional) --RESOURCES-- We're using 32in24-15_tex_v2 as the resource pack. (courtesy of esselfortium) Custom textures used outside the resource pack are not permitted --EPISODE THEMES-- Each episode will span 10 levels each. Episode 1 || Maps 1 - 10 The Earth episode - Grungy tech bases, decaying factories, urban ghettos, sewers, dystopian societal infrastructure, stuff like that. These maps should be fairly easy. Episode 2 || Maps 11 - 20 This episode will take place in the FUTURE! - Gray space stations, futuristic metropolises, silver hallways, etc. These maps should provide a good challenge. Episode 3 || Maps 21 - 30 This episode will take place in Limbo, meaning - Abstract locations, dark voids, abandoned interdimensional temples, and so on. These maps should be HARD. Slot claims are first come, first served. With that in mind... Both Map31 and Map32 should not adhere to the themes described above. Go nuts with em'. Maps 10, 20, and 30 should serve as finales to their respective episodes. Maps 10 and 20 should also have death exits. Maps 15 and 31 will need secret level exits. Make sure you have something interesting in mind if you claim Map07. Make sure to utilize the sky transfer linedef when choosing a sky. Ensure whatever sky you decide to use for you're map fits the episode theme you're mapping for. I'll be around most evenings to playtest any maps that are posted here. If you have any questions, just ask. I'll try to help out as best I can. --DEADLINE-- November 30th, 12 PM (ET) The deadline has been extended indefinitely Happy mapping! DRON12261 Posted May 12 Oh yes, now I can already see the great leap to Community Project. I hope you get a megawad of the same quality as Machete) Maybe I'll even take part in it later. The only small point. If you want your work to be cooperative-compatible, it's not enough to just add extra player starts. You have to make sure that the player can get to the right point after respawning. I.e. if there's going to be some arena with doors closing behind the back and everything, there should definitely be a one-way extra pass to that arena so you can get to it again. Well, and additional cooperative arrangement of mobs will also be a good plus. Good luck! 4 Share this post Link to post
Bobby "J Posted May 12 This is the kind of project I've been waiting for. Mark me down for whatever slot in Episode 3. 3 Share this post Link to post
RastaManGames Posted May 12 (edited) @A2Rob I can make a map for "Earth" episode (that is number 1), but can't claim exact entry. Can I still create an entry, so you can put it in the appropriate slot then? For now let it be a MAP05, I guess. P.S.: I guess that since we have a strong episodes, changing sky is prohibited? stupid (tsocheff) Posted May 12 my original slot was map 23 in the other cp so i guess put my slot for map 23 2 Share this post Link to post
ZeMystic Posted May 12 Played through Surge Disposal to gauge the difficulty. Fun stuff! Can I take the MAP01 or MAP02 slot? which ever you prefer. 2 Share this post Link to post
Xaser Posted May 12 This is certainly a much more solid concept for a project this time 'round (a proper "Scythe the way Alm Did" is way overdue at this point :P ) but there's no reason to stick to the tired old 32-map structure for any non-vanilla projects these days; UMAPINFO has been a thing for a while now. 13 Share this post Link to post
cannonball Posted May 12 Sweet, this was a good move I think on behalf of the whole project. I think I should be able to make one entry for this, so can I take Map19 please, but obviously this can be moved depending on the difficulties of surrounding maps. 4 Share this post Link to post
spineapple tea Posted May 12 Thank you very much for starting a proper Scythe tribute project. MAP24, please. 3 Share this post Link to post
Monsieur E Posted May 12 I'd be interested to map for an e3 slot, I'll take 26. 2 Share this post Link to post
Omniarch Posted May 12 I've been itching to try making something short and flow-oriented in the vein of Scythe 2 / X for a while now, and this seems like a great opportunity to do so. May I claim the MAP18 slot? 2 Share this post Link to post
Walter confetti Posted May 12 Oh yeah, that's a good project! Not sure if I can do something, but it's a interesting one! 2 Share this post Link to post
RastaManGames Posted May 12 @A2Rob Oh... You little rascal! Why? Because you really got me with description of "Episode 1"! I started it few hours ago and still can't stop, because of you! Spoiler 1 Share this post Link to post
tonytheparrot Posted May 12 (edited) Well, it's the time to actually make that map I was supposed to do for resharpened. I will take slot 25 Edited May 12 by tonytheparrot 2 Share this post Link to post

Doomy__Doom Posted May 12 (edited) I guess I'll take map 10. If there are any specific requirements as to how Doomguy should or shouldn't be slinged (slung?) into the Future(tm), such as time machine or demonic portal, as well as death exit necessity (assuming no by default) I'm all ears. 2 Share this post Link to post

A time machine would be appropriate. Also yes, use a death exit, probably should have mentioned that in the op. 2 Share this post Link to post

Azure_Horror Posted May 12 Seeing that most of Episode 3 is already picked: Can I take slot 30? By the way, on topic on map length and episode 3: What about "Fire and Ice" homages? This one was huge! Would this Rusty Drill project avoid longer maps at all, or are some of bigger maps permitted occasionally? Places, where long maps won't feel too alien - slots 29 and 30 (homage to scythe ice sub-episode) - episode endings in general - homage to "fire and ice" length in particular. - secret maps (all weird maps traditionally go to secret slots, after all! That said, Scythe map 31 is of modest length, and map 32 is really short) 4 Share this post Link to post
DynamiteKaitorn Posted May 12 Since this is a revamp of Scythe: Resharpened, can I pwease re-take map02? :3 3 Share this post Link to post
A2Rob Posted May 12 1 hour ago, Azure_Horror said: By the way, on topic on map length and episode 3: What about "Fire and Ice" homages? This one was huge! I'd like to keep things relatively short, even for episode 3. Homages are fine (Surge Disposal is a homage to Scythe Map05), as long as they adhere to the episode theme you're mapping for. (An example would be a homage to Scythe 2 Map09, but instead of a desert, it's a barren wasteyard.) 2 Share this post Link to post
Al-Faris M Posted May 12 Sign me up for MAP20! I'd love to make futuristic space stations, and I'll make sure to add a death exit and make it a finale for Episode 2. 2 Share this post Link to post
4shockblast Posted May 12 Hmm, I guess map 28 is taken already, so I'll go for map 32. :^) 7 Share this post Link to post
