Cardboard Marty Posted May 14, 2023 (edited) (character art by @floressas_) Hey everybody, I'm Cardboard Marty! If you haven't seen me around before or are unfamiliar with my stuff, I am an artist, voice actor, and musician who has been around the community since 2003. You've probably seen my work in a variety of projects. In this thread, I'm providing sprites for weapons, enemies, sounds, and other resources for you to use! Neat! Be sure to credit me (Cardboard Marty) and the authors listed in the credits. Q: Am I allowed to use these for my commercial projects?A: In most cases, no. However, if the resource is listed as being Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution licensed in the CREDITS.txt file, yes! Q: What is "The Works" and do the volume numbers matter? Short answer: "The Works" label and volume number don't matter.Longer answer: When I initially released my sprite edits in a collected package, I called it "The Works Volume 1", with the idea that I'd release another collection at some point. I started releasing the following material individually, so the "Works" whole package releases stopped being relevant. Now, I use the volume number as a personal catalog number to mark my progress. Don't worry about it! Q: Do you do commissions or requests? A: Not currently! My workload fluctuates, and it's difficult for me to commit to any more ongoing projects at this time. That can change in the future, though! Q: Can I edit these and re-release them?A: Yes! Leave my name in the credits (along with the original authors if applicable), and please feel free to link me to what you made! Suggestions and comments are strongly encouraged and appreciated! ENJOY! 📦 Edited September 30 by Cardboard Marty : [NEW] Red Baron and Spectre EX 39 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted May 18, 2023 (edited) It's been a while since I've released something NEW, so introducing...the JUPITER SMASHER! I created the base model by mashing up a bunch of weapon models found on DeviantArt and painting over them to make something cohesive. There really isn't anything left of the original models outside of the basic shape, and I'm really proud of how this came out! This is one of several weapons I created to get back into my groove and workflow. I didn't really have any idea what to do for additional animations or a reload, unfortunately. To compensate, I did something really fancy with the muzzle flash, but also created a more "standard" muzzle flash (could be good for an alt-fire)! I also included an alternate color version with a red muzzle flash. Cool! From now on, I'll try to include PSD files with these releases! In this one, for example, I created an extended arm sprite that I ended up cropping out of the final frames. I'm really proud of some of the stuff I've been working on lately; let me know what you think! Edited September 4 by Cardboard Marty 13 Share this post Link to post
ViolentBeetle Posted May 18, 2023 This looks great, but are all weapons in your pack angled and hang from the side of the screen (Not that there's anything wrong with that, obviously, but it won't work for me specifically, so there would be no point in browsing through if that's the case) 0 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted August 17 (edited) Google Drive Mirror Earlier this year, I commissioned @DrPyspy for some new base sprites for the player/zombie holding a pistol in a slightly more realistic pose. They've been sitting on my HDD for a couple of months, and I figured many of you would get better use out of them! Crediting me is unnecessary; credit DrPyspy if you use these as a base for anything! Edited September 4 by Cardboard Marty 11 Share this post Link to post
Lizardcommando Posted August 20 (edited) Oh, these look really nice! I may just have to use these instead of the default pistol zombiemen I have been using for the longest time for my mapset. EDIT: Were the shooting animations and death animations ever completed? Edited August 20 by Lizardcommando 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted August 22 (edited) Here is something new! This is a relatively quick sprite edit, but I've always wondered what the Hell Knight would look like with a minor tweak to its head to differentiate it from the Baron of Hell. Here is a bullet-point list of features for this guy: It uses sprites from the Doom 2 Minor Sprite Fixing Project by @Revenant100 as a base to ensure the best quality. Recolored the base Baron of Hell sprites to use a broader range of available colors from the Doom palette. New horns, originally created by @Stopsignal and expanded on by me. Included .wad file also uses offsets from the aforementioned Minor Sprite Fixing Project. Also includes an editable .PSD file, detailed below! The PSD file has an easy-to-edit layout, allowing you to easily adjust the skin color, legs, and horns/hooves! The Hell Knight and/or Baron of Hell recolor of your dreams is just a few clicks away...! The .PSD file also includes a color lookup adjustment layer that automatically adjusts the sprites to show in the Doom palette. Neato! You can also disable the layer if you don't care about your sprites being in the Doom palette and then make the off-green/purple Hell Knight and/or Baron of Hell recolor of your dreams! Lizardcommando Posted August 22 Good to know. I ended up having to do some slight edits to the pistol guy sprites' death animations that I have on hand. I just had to make that guy's head bald like the shotgun guy and your pistol guy here. 1 Share this post Link to post
Lizardcommando Posted August 27 I'm not really sure if this is the right spot to post this or not, but I tested out your pistol guy's sprites in my mod. While it looks really nice, I can't help but notice that it seems to be really tall compared to the other human enemy sprites. Maybe it's just my eyes playing tricks on me or something, I dunno. I didn't increase the sprites' scale or anything via decorate as far as I can recall. 1 Share this post Link to post
ShallowB Posted August 27 He's about two pixels taller, but I don't think that's unreasonable for his more upright posture. Still looks like he fits in with the others. 3 Share this post Link to post
Lizardcommando Posted August 28 Ah ok, I didn't realize how upright the new guy is compared to many of the other human enemies. That makes sense now. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted August 28 (edited) This electric snake staff was originally created for the Abysm 2: Pharaoh's Judgement expansion by @jazzmaster9! I drew this weapon from scratch and had a lot of fun animating all the zappy effects, which look great in motion. The version in Abysm 2 had the idle animation removed, but those frames are included with this download! I've also included a new Hexen-paletted set of frames, brightmaps, and SOUNDS! The sounds come in both a crunchy 11025k "retro" bitrate version and a "modern" version at a higher bitrate! Since I drew this one from scratch, these sprites are Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licensed, so you can use them wherever you like as long as I'm credited. IMPORTANT NOTE: The included sounds are NOT CC-licensed since they use commercial assets. As ShallowB noted above, the pistol guy is standing more upright; HOWEVER, I'll work with @DrPyspy to re-render the frames to be 1-2 pixels shorter to fit in a bit better. I probably would've caught this if I had used them right away for their intended purpose. 😔 Edited September 4 by Cardboard Marty 8 Share this post Link to post

It was so good in fact, i moved the twin Fang from a secret weapon to a normal progression weapon, just to people get to see and use it. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 1 (edited) The double-barrel shotgun from @Pieruskwurje's delightful project Insanity Edged is here! This is a remake of my nearly twenty-year-old Doom Hunt Double Barrel shotgun, featured in the Works Volume 1. I saw that permission was given for it to be used elsewhere, so I figured I'd release a cohesive package. I put a whole lot of work into this weapon, and as such, this release has a ton of content! Alternate firing frames: Single barrel firing frames! I created these for fun (mostly), with the idea that a future version of Winter's Fury/Insanity Edged could have alt-fires for weapons. Alternate color: Closer to what ended up in Insanity Edged, but not quite. I also wanted to include the frames for the Insanity Edged version of the weapon, but for whatever reason, the .PSD I have doesn't match the released version. That's a problem for future me, I suppose! Handless versions: No hands for both versions of the gun! Brightmaps: Woohoo! I created new brightmaps for the alt-fire frames for this release as well! Sounds: Completely new sounds for the weapon. They're not included in Insanity Edged (yet, more on that later). New hands: Brand new hands from scratch! Well, using my arms as a base, but still! Most of the work outside of the actual weapon probably went into these. 😅 EDIT: These new hands are now on their own sheet! A little backstory on this: I've had an idea to do a Winter's Fury weapon pack for a looooong time! My extremely old and crusty Duke Nukem shotgun edit filled me with an indescribable regretful feeling every time I saw it in-game, so as a pet project last year, I ended up remaking it from scratch. I talked to Pieruskwurje about making that weapon pack official and revamping all of the weapons. Pieruskwurje was a joy to work with, but my shortcomings as an artist, issues with my workflow (this weapon is spread across five different .PSD files for no discernible reason), and some personal issues that cropped up in real life forced me to prioritize other projects and my well-being. Working on this weapon burned me out, but I hope to eventually return to that idea with a better skill set and more efficient work methods. I'm working towards that now, and I hope to post some NEW stuff soon! Also here is a comparison between the two versions. I don't think I made any changes to the weapon this year, thus the 2023 date, but still! What a difference nearly twenty years of progress makes! Hope you guys enjoy! It's already been a year, but I think I remember slightly adjusting the colour and/or contrast of the final version in the mod during testing (to the brown parts I think? Or at least the parts that were brown in the original version.) I definitely would have done this as a quick and dirty job and didn't save anything, so I apologise for the mismatch. 4 hours ago, Cardboard Marty said: My extremely old and crusty Duke Nukem shotgun edit filled me with an indescribable regretful feeling every time I saw it in-game, so as a pet project last year, I ended up remaking it from scratch. Sometimes I still see it in my nightmares, and I have to remind myself that it's gone and can't hurt me anymore. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 1 (edited) It seems we share the same nightmare... And no worries! I actually have a raw animation export for the version used in the current release, so I probably renamed a file I shouldn't have or nuked a couple of adjustment layers. Either way, I'll reapproach it when the time comes to return to the fray! I have a bunch more files related to this shotgun that I left on the table for future Winter's Fury/Insanity Edged purposes... 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 3 (edited) THE MAGMA CANNON! Some of you (I have no idea who) might remember the old Works Vol.2 preview images had a weapon called the Magma Cannon. I've been on a centered/classic-style weapon kick lately, so I figured I'd go back and recreate it! The final result (which was drawn entirely from scratch!) doesn't really look like the 2009-era frankensprite of the same name, but I LOVE how this came out. I included the old sprite as a little bonus and some alternate flashes before I readjusted to make the animation flow better. I also added a .GIF of a suggested animation. It looks dope! Since I drew this gun from scratch, this one is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license! Woohoo! Go nuts! On another note, I'll probably be revamping the original post to include thumbnails for all of the released stuff so far. Be on the lookout! Also, I put up a website for The Cardboard Box! Nothing new you're not seeing here, but I thought I'd mention it! Edited September 4 by Cardboard Marty 14 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 5 BIG UPDATE TO THE ORIGINAL POST: I've completely revamped it and added thumbnails for all of my releases so far. I've also included a new MASTER LIST SPREADSHEET that catalogs all of these with links and fancy columns! Check it out; it took me a looong time to put it all together! UPDATES [UPDATE] All files have been moved to a different Google Drive. I checked to ensure the access links worked for everything, but please let me know if you can't access something! [UPDATE] I've reorganized all the hand sheets I've released! Nothing new, but they should be slightly easier to use now! [NEW] A blast from the past, the Obliterator, Erasus, and Leviathan (Angled) join the arsenal. These were initially teased in the original "The Works" thread on the ZDoom forum, but I never finished them and lost the source files quite a bit ago. @TiberiumSoul (RIP) had re-handed the existing frames I made and released them around 2012. I don't have any current intentions of returning to these older weapons (for the most part), so I packaged them together here! [NEW] EXTRA HANDS 03! These are brand new hands I created from scratch that were initially included in the download for the Model DHDB2 I recently released. However, I added a couple of new hands that weren't on the sheet originally and split them into their own download. Let me know what you guys think! 1 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 9 (edited) It's time to finally open the vault! The Space Pirate: Legacy Treasure Vault is a massive collection of assets from the legacy versions of TSP. This encompasses all of the weapons from the last legacy release and multiple in-development versions of TSP that never saw the light of day. I've also included a ton of new animations and sprites that my pal Sgt. Shivers created that (to my knowledge) were never posted anywhere! NOTE: Melody Crosswell's voice lines from the last legacy version of The Space Pirate are NOT included in this download, and I would prefer that you don't use them. Cardboard Marty Posted September 13 (edited) Monster Sounds EX! This is a pet project of mine over the last week or so, inspired by something I've been working on with @DrPyspy. This replaces all duplicated monster sound effects with their own unique sound effects created by me! The included .PK3 loads in ZDoom, GZDoom, and Zandronum. All sounds are at a 11025 Hz sample rate and can easily be converted to Doom Sound format for non-ZDoom ports. Note that the included unique Hell Knight sounds for their projectile/melee and the sound effect for the Cacodemon's melee attack require new actors to utilize those sounds. Grab it under the SOUNDS section in the first post and let me know what you think! 11 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 19 (edited) I did a little housecleaning and converted some sounds to 8-bit that I accidentally left at 32-bit, so I figured I'd put out an update! UPDATE - Monster Sounds EX [NEW] "BV - Monster Sounds EX (Edited Monsters).pk3" has been added! This makes use of the unique Hell Knight sounds as well as the Cacodemon melee sounds. I've included a Baron of Hell recolor that also throws red fireballs! I didn't feel like this deserved its own separate release since it's pretty simple, but hey! There he is! Also there are no gameplay changes with these, so they should be pretty close to vanilla. [NEW] Wolfenstein SS sounds! I added a fire, active, and pain sound into the mix. Honestly, I was pretty stumped on what to do for the active sound; many of the voice lines I tried sounded a bit too cult-y, and the alternatives I tried didn't make sense. I used a heartbeat sound from the original Wolf3D, but maybe I'll return to it. Who knows! [UPDATE] Converted some lingering sound files from 32-bit to 8-bit. Whoops! [UPDATE] I added an archival folder (found in sounds -> zzz - archival) with an older version of the cacodemon active sound. I've been asked about doing a DeHackEd version, so that might be the next update if I pursue that! Edited September 19 by Cardboard Marty 3 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 20 Following up on that DeHackEd version, I've created a new version for MBF21-supported ports! There's a new thread for it over in the Gameplay Mods, but you can still download it here in the first post of the thread! 2 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted September 30 (edited) Initially, I didn't feel like these guys were worth their own download, but eh, here they are! The Red Baron (with corresponding red fireballs) and Spectre EX join the fray! The Spectre EX was designed with a Doom 64-like behavior in mind, where it would fade slightly after seeing the player. They're not super crazy, but I did recolor them manually and paid close attention to detail! Anyway, grab them in the first post under ENEMIES + FRIENDS! 4 Share this post Link to post

The darker spectre colors make them harder to see as intended and the green blood with the red projectiles looks quite odd. 0 Share this post Link to post
