EduardoAndFriends Posted Friday at 06:24 AM (edited) Hey there, good people of Doom World. It's been a minute, so I'm back with a new Doom project: Deep Breath - a short mapset at the bottom of the ocean. In this project, our little green hero steps through the entryway airlock of an underwater base, the H.A.D.E.S (Hydro Atomic Deepsea Experimental Science) Facility, to find that demons are running rampant. Our mission: get to the heart of the Facility and activate the self-destruct protocol. Hopefully Doomguy can make it out alive, or at least sink down to a watery grave with all the monsters. Comp level: 9 (Boom). DOWNLOAD: Coming SOON-ish. Some time in June. Yeah, that sounds about right. < TITLEPIC of Doomguy embracing the briny deep. Featuring: yummy, crunchy brown Quake textures balanced with the disquieting blue of the ocean trench, and PLENTY of yellow and black hazard strips! music sourced from only the sexiest games and creative Doomheads! a quick pistol to give pistol-starters an extra edge! VERY quick Pinkies! numerous battles out in the freezing water, with the aid of your Scuba Gear (ta-ta, Radiation Suit)! Difficulty settings that dictate weapon, health, and ammo placement - not monsters! N.B: This WAD is a lot easier than Relic, but with its own challenges. But it's not a total ball-breaker, so I don't feel monster difficulty is of great importance here. If you play on HMP usually, you'll get to hone your skills. If you're a UV nut, this might be a nice break from overly spicy maps. Green and red lights to assist with progression for all but the most navigationally-challenged (plus it looks tasty)! Tested and playable on Woof, DSDA, and GzDoom, but I've been testing largely on GzDoom with bloom lights enabled which make the green and red lights glow beautifully ... but play however you like! And much more ... Development notes (this will be updated as things progress): Map 01 is complete after an overhaul of a fight, and the ending has been tweaked for better accessibility for non-mouselook folks. Map 02 is nearing completion and is my favourite so far. Keeps making me think of Knee-Deep In The Dead for some reason. Not sure why. Good fun, though. Map 03 is coming to a simmer. A lot of underwater navigation here (at least for now), which has a really interesting vibe to it. Not sure how many maps will be made - I'll cross that bridge when I come to it! :) Snappies: -Edz xo Edited Friday at 09:46 AM by EduardoAndFriends : Updates 65 Share this post Link to post
Cardboard Marty Posted Friday at 07:00 AM I really like the idea of an underwater base theme, the screenshots look fantastic! Excited to check this out when it releases! 1 Share this post Link to post

DreadWanderer Posted Friday at 09:29 AM Delicious screenies with wholesome aesthetics, it makes the deep blue feel much friendlier than how we usually imagine it. Love the implementation of Quake textures. Quick question: is this limit-removing, Boom-compatible, or something else? 1 Share this post Link to post

I know essel & co. managed to pull off some incredible vanilla-compatible stuff with dehacked in KDiKDiZD, but working in Boom or MBF/MBF21 seems to be more convenient. 1 Share this post Link to post

ValveMercenary Posted Friday at 01:06 PM Damn this looks really interesting, I would really like to play this once it comes out! Now... The question of the century: Is it a true Boom compatible, or a PrBoom compatible? 1 Share this post Link to post

Now... The question of the century: Is it a true Boom compatible, or a PrBoom compatible? I'm pretty sure that very few wads have been tested in the old DOS Boom EXEs from 1998 in the last 20 years, so I'm going to assume it means "Boom compatible" in the usual sense of "runs in Pr+, DSDA, Eternity, GZDoom, and other modern ports that support Boom features". 3 Share this post Link to post

This is also how I understand Boom compatibility. DSDA is now my main port and I've never had an issue with anything that is listed as "Boom compatible", "cl9", and so on. I would call GZDoom 99% Boom compatible, since I've previously had trouble with Boom wads like Arceon that simply crashed on me at key points, something which never happened in DSDA. Setting individual compatibility flags in GZ didn't help at all. Doom Wiki still lists GZ as "mostly" Boom compatible. Granted, since I've made the switch to DSDA, I haven't gone back to replaying problematic wads to see if any issues have been addressed. 1 Share this post Link to post
fuzzytrick Posted Friday at 02:43 PM I had a underwater WAD project in mind for some time. Seeing the theme and the screenshots here makes me so excited to try it out! Maybe I'll be inspired enough to actually work on mine, hah. 1 Share this post Link to post

Aquatic Wonder is a fun wad overall, but the omnipresent blue can be a bit jarring. I much prefer what you did here with Deep Breath - a more varied palette with more subdued shades of blue. 1 Share this post Link to post
