HQDefault Posted May 31, 2023 (edited) Toxic Trouble is just a quick single-map project I decided to do more as an exercise more than anything else. I wanted some practice with the idea of "never just one problem", so I tried to make sure most of the major encounters have the player dealing with multiple problems at once. Granted, that's pretty easy to do with Doom 2's enemy roster, but the key here is this time I'm doing it on purpose. This was also the first time I designed a map specifically around the Hurt Me Plenty skill. Usually I design around Ultra-Violence and just make it easier from there, but here I decided to actually treat the "Normal" skill as the default. With all that said, the map should hopefully be reasonably difficult, but nothing ridiculous. DOWNLOAD HERE: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yq5tab0srt9qmbc/Toxic Trouble.wad?dl=0 Music is "Going Down the Fastway" from Rise of the Triad. Also uses Cage's Texture Pack because it's always great. Uses the UDMF map format, so it requires GZDoom... I think. JUMPING: No. CROUCHING: No. FREELOOK: Yes. RECOMMENDED DIFFICULTY: Hurt Me Plenty COMPATIBILITY WARNING- This map uses an integrated weapon mod that replaces the chaingun, and thus will likely break most other weapon mods. If you want to use some kind of a gameplay mod with this map, use THIS download link instead: https://www.dropbox.com/s/sbod0d1hlsgrlc8/Toxic Trouble - NoWeaponMod.wad?dl=0 Edited June 3, 2023 by HQDefault 19 Share this post Link to post
Biodegradable Posted May 31, 2023 Whoa, this map's a non-stop thrill ride from beginning to end. I utterly adore the level flow and combat, fam. This is one of those kind of maps that is quite frenetic, but never frantic. Just lots of fun, simple tricks that keep the player on their toes the entire time without feeling too exasperating. Way too much fun! 10/10! 5 Share this post Link to post
BerserkerNoir Posted June 3, 2023 Really nice! Intense with non-stop action, and the texturing is pretty good too. I wish more maps were like this, hard without going overboard with monster count. 1 Share this post Link to post

MFW I realize that Project Brutality fucks up UDMF texture transparency, meaning that it breaks every map that uses stock textures for glass windows Y u do this PB Y u gotta break things with all ur fancy effects 0 Share this post Link to post
HQDefault Posted June 3, 2023 (edited) U P D A T E T I M E -Improved telegraphing for a few secrets -Fixed a lift having a missing lower texture -Made it so the door to that lift no longer requires a blue key, instead there's just a wall that opens after you pass a certain threshold -Changed the texture on a window to use a custom texture so now hopefully it won't break with Project Brutality shader mods Edited June 4, 2023 by HQDefault 0 Share this post Link to post

That might be the reason 1 Share this post Link to post
NaliSeed Posted June 3, 2023 Toxic Trouble; sounds like a good name for a Donkey Kong Country level. 1 Share this post Link to post

rita remton Posted June 4, 2023 hi! completed this in [uv]. gorgeous vanilla aesthetics. good use of space, did not feel too spacious nor too cramped even with monsters. and the battles were really nice - not too sadistic/grindy but not too easy-going either. superbly balanced. hope you make more maps like this! thanks :) 0 Share this post Link to post

Daytime Waitress Posted June 21, 2023 As others have said, this has got a real nice flow that keeps the player on their toes without overwhelming them - the ROTT pistols were an absolutely perfect fit for it. The "long" nukage room (second screenshot of OP) with all the infighting was a bunch of fun, too. Look forward to tackling it again in UV. 0 Share this post Link to post
Qoko Posted December 3, 2023 Played this on UV after David's playthrough. Enjoyable little venture though I was partially spoiled in regards to the traps, so it was a relatively easy one shot. The shining part of the map are the secrets. It's simple to make a hard to find area and put a power up in there (looking at you, one-sided switch) but the vantage points are awesome: the first red door shortcut and ambushing a group from behind with a barrel, then the vent to peek-a-boo the enemies. 25 minutes of killing and exploring, job well done. 1 Share this post Link to post
