How Do You Name Your Game Saves?

Recommended Posts

Slot 1 is called quicksave so if I’m using a quicksave it just goes there.

Others are whatever the port automatically picks.

I have a very stupid naming system.

"Bob"

So my name saves often look like:

"Bob 1"

"Bob 2"

"Bob 3"

LOL. I mean, Doomguy doesn't have a name, so I default to "Bob" because it amuses me lol.

XXX

This is what I actually write most of the time while saving. But sometimes I write proper WAD name too.

You'll get over it, I'm sure sure sure sure sure sure.

As for my savegames, it's usually just the pwad name with the amount of typos inversely proportional to the amount of health I have remaining.

I usually identify them with curse words and the more vulgar the save name is the more dire the situation of the save

Ironically, I reckon most people would expect - out of the two of us - that I'd be the one who would do that. :^P

For context, the way I usually play is by pistol-starting and trying to UV max levels even on blind playthroughs, not allowing myself to save mid-level unless playing a long and/or very difficult map, in which case I only allow up to 2 saves which I can only use when I reach the first and second third of the kill count, making exceptions in slaughter-like maps in which I allow myself saving every 100 kills (saving mid-fight is not allowed).

With that in mind, in GZDoom, I only have one savefile per WAD, which is named after the title of the WAD itself accompanied by the map number in parentheses, which looks like this:

Ancient Aliens (15)

Valiant (12)

Hardfest (09)

Sunlust (17)

Sunder (03)

Naturally, the only savefile I can load is the one that corresponds to the WAD I'm currently playing, and this system makes it easy to choose what WAD to play next if I get bored, considering the map and the style of the WAD I see on the list

my current format:

01~
02~
...
10~

then overwrite 01~ with 11~, 02~ with 12~ ..., 10~ with 20~;
then 11~ with 21~, 12~ with 22~, and so on...

for example:

11a

12c

13b

04a

05c

06a

07c

08a

09c

10c

where ~:
= "a" for safe strategic location (cleared corners, before opening doors, before entering a new area, before pressing switches, before jumping, before picking up a suspiciously positioned item). the same save (with the same number) is repeatedly updated until a monster is encountered, then a new save with a new number is made (the new save is with a "b").
= "b" saves mid-battle with a new number, unless the battle is too near the previous battle where "a" would be overwritten. i want to save time by not restarting a battle. there can be overwrites of the same save number, or newer saves with newer numbers with a "b", based on the intensity of the battle.
= "c" after a battle which replaces the last "b". then a new save with a new number is made (the new save is with an "a").

this way, i have up to 10 saves with "before" and "after" battles. the 10 saves allow checks (eg 21~ must replace 11~, 22~ must replace 12~, 23~ must replace 13~, etc) and is usually enough for me to go back a few battles to try other battle strategies/pathways.

before pressing the exit button of a level, i would make a new save, naming it as [wad name].[map id].end ... eg: mywad.map01.end

Random numbers that don't make any sense, and sometimes letters, something like:

1

2w

1111

I usually manually save at the beginning of each map, and so just name it the name of the wad followed by "map02", "map03" or whichever map I'm playing at that point.

sometimes its: "a" "aa" "aaa" . . .

othertimes it's "a" "b" "c" . . .

occasionally It wad and map, like "Scythe 30"

sometimes when it's multiple I'll do a dash "Scythe 30-1" Scythe 30-2" . . .

sometimes it actual just keyboard spam

and one time it was "go fuck yourself" "kill me" "end this" "fucking finally" (for those curious, it was my first time playing map 29 of Sunlust)

I usually use the name of the wad, or an abbreviation and the number of saves from 1 to 4. 1 is for the beginning of the level and 2 to 4 are the saves I cycle through while playing. Sometimes I accidentally save during the middle of the level on slot 1 and I get kinda pissed, but I almost never really need save 1, so it's ok.

random words, sentances, numbers, but nothing consistent. sometimes as simple as 'save' and sometimes some nonsense like 'jwusgwheue'

These are the weird, oddly specific threads that I love seeing on community forums, hahaha! :-)

When I actually remember to save my progress, I tend to go with the WAD name and then the map name but remove all of the vowels for some reason, lol!
For instance; "Heartland's Map01 - Subway Sandwich" becomes "Hrtlnd: Sbwy Sndwch"

In situations where the save name is too long to fit, my backup is just to go the WAD name and the map number but don't bother cutting all the vowels this time.
So "Heartland's Map02 - Bruce R. & Son Construction Co." becomes "Heartland: Map02"

If I'm running two saves on the same map for whatever reason I'll just pop a roman numeral at the end of the save name (II, III IV, V, etc).

Super interesting to read all of the varied approaches for such a by-the-numbers feature of the game! The brain sure makes people come up with some pretty idiosyncratic ideas and methods!

i always name them "mklblblbl" or "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" or something along the lines of that so that i can never identify which save file corresponds to which wad/level :)

Name of the wad, followed by map number.

Sometimes difficulty, if I have a save of a Nightmare game in vanilla Doom.

If it's just a save in a dummy play-test of a wad I'm working on, then I call it appropriately, "A save" and "Another save"
