Best 2000’s fps game in terms of gameplay, story, and soundtrack

Recommended Posts

For gameplay and soundtrack I’m saying Call of duty: World at war

For story Half-Life 2

Also don’t say games are bad just because you don’t like them, I don’t want this to turn into an argument like the 90’s one did

Story: Half-Life 2, especially Episode Two

Gameplay: F.E.A.R. is unparalleled except for maybe Trepang2

Soundtrack: F.E.A.R.

I didn't take Deus Ex into account because it's more of an imsim/RPG but I agree, that's a hard one to top in regards to storytelling.

Gameplay: Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge. Fast-paced, highly aggressive World War II-style dogfighting, with a unique advanced maneuver system that I've never seen in any other air combat game since. Also, the game's unique airplanes are all very fun to fly, each with their own flight characteristics and special weapon.

Music: I'm going to give this one to Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. The Russian Mafiya's themes sound like they'd be right at home in a crime thriller set in the former Soviet Union, with their action theme almost fit for Stalingrad; while the South Korean's themes give the impression of a "David vs. Goliath" struggle against a far stronger opponent; and the Allied Nations' themes are just straight up heroic.

Story: Mass Effect, at least of the games I've played. The galaxy was very well fleshed-out, feeling like a lived-in world where the player was as much a spectator of other peoples' goings on as much as they were an active shaper of the world themselves. It really gave you the feeling of going from being just a space marine to being the savior of the entire Milky Way.

Did you edit the thread title to make my picks invalid, or is that just me?

Halo coasts largely on the title theme. The in-level music just doesn't jump out at me.

Music and Story definitely Bioshock. Though i probably wouldn't give it the gameplay award. Half-life 2 for that one I'd say.

@Murdoch Bioshock has an amazing environment and the story is pretty good, but yeah the gameplay is...rough. Gotta love it when weapon upgrades become mitigated by spongy versions of common enemies by the endgame.

No One Lives Forever 1/2 checks all the boxes imo, specifically the sequel which takes each good element of the first game and expands it even further.
a shame that this duology is still so criminally underrated tho..

I've always perfered Bioshock to HL2. I was a console gamer until around 2012, the intro to Bioshock (via the demo) was one of the coolest things ever when I first played it. The combat isn't anything great, and the enemies are spongy, but the weapons do have weight to them and I enjoyed the plasmid system and weapon upgrades, so I thought the combat was good enough. I like the game best on the hardest difficulty to be honest. The real issues that hold it back from true greatness for me is the "morality system" and the final boss/ending. I still really like Bioshock though. I thought BS2 was decent, I didn't care for Infinite at all.

I personally though that Bioshock fell short on the music and didn't use audio to its advantage, I do agree with you on the story though.

Yeah. I still adore it though. I personally find Bioshock 2's gameplay much better, with the combination of weapons and plasmids allowing for neat combinations. How can you not love a game where you can shoot dead an enemy with one hand, telekineticaly pick them up with the other, and launch their corpse at other enemies, while also still shooting them?

I love Minerva's Den story the most. The twist at the end about who the player actually is combined with a genuinely moving performance by the always awesome Carl Lumbly makes for a memorable experience.

I never got the hate for infinite, I do think it could be its own thing and not take the realism out of the original two, But other than that i loved that game.

Heh, no shockers here:

Story:
Bioshock. (I just can't bring myself to think of Deus Ex as a FPS)

Gameplay:
F.E.A.R. (Maybe the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, but again, that's another FPS with an asterisk next to it)

Muisc:
Plenty of good music here, but I can't think of anything that stands out.

"Metroid Prime" takes the cake for me.

I'm not as familiar with 2000's FPS games so my list may seem a bit small.

For sound track I HAVE to give it to Unreal Tournament 2004! Tokara Forest baybeeeeeee! :D

When it comes to gameplay I'm probably gonna give it to Postal 2. Just walking down the street and then seeing some random fat guy whip out a shotgun and blow the brains out of a police officer and then you're just there pissing in the middle of the road. Only Postal 2. XD

And finally for story as much as I hate the games, I'm voting Half-Life 2 just simply because I can't think of another 2000's FPS game with a story I like.

Gameplay-wise: Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 were very key games for me during this time, and Dario Casali made a lot of levels for both. What a guy!

Single-player wise, I can’t get me enough of them Serious Sam games either. Also big fun mention to Perfect Dark: I think I got more out of that than I did Halo CE.

Also I’ll add a few other categories

Atmosphere: Prey

Gore: idk

If you’re wondering why I’m not putting F.E.A.R in any of them it’s cuz I haven’t played it but I probably should lol

(sigh) Fine.

I still stand by my picks, but I'm not as well-versed in FPS of the 2000s.

However, if I had to pick from strictly FPS games of the era:

Soundtrack: Star Wars: Republic Commando. I actually really like the combination of the John Williams orchestral score and the Maori-inspired Mandalorian chants that they used for this one.

Gameplay: Medal of Honor: Frontline. Combination of fast-paced run'n'gun sections with more methodical stealth-oriented sections, as well as sometimes offering different paths to complete certain objectives. It also happens to still use health pickups like more old-school FPS instead of regeneration.

Story: Battlefield: Bad Company. The characters of Bravo Company are a dysfunctional bunch to put it mildly, but that's what makes Bad Company FUN, the fact that they don't take themselves seriously. It makes the whole story come off as more enjoyable than a generic military FPS plot should.

Atmosphere: Gotta go with Republic Commando again here. It's kinda nice getting a grunt's eye view of the Star Wars universe, seeing things as the common Troopers do. If only we could have something similar based around commanding a squad of Rebel Alliance soldiers around to pick apart the Galactic Empire...

Gore: I just have to give this one to Fallout 3, out of the ones I've played. I know it's a role-playing game more than an FPS; but it's got guns and a first-person perspective, so it fits. Seriously, taking "Bloody Mess" is more just to watch the splatter when one of your grenades goes off at a Super Mutant's feet rather than the meager damage bonus it gives you.
