For what it's worth, the .plan file of the day of Romero's firing suggests one of the main reasons for his firing was hyping up a lot of features in Quake in places like IRC channels, a lot of which ended up getting removed or never being implemented due to the game's shift in genre/focus. I think there's a lot more to the story than the "he was lazy" narrative that's so widely shared.

EDIT:

It's a bit more vague than I remember it being but I am pretty sure this is referring to Romero's public relations for Quake.

I would also add someone lazy by carmacks standards is still damn pretty hardworking to the average person. Carmack had a Live and breathe work attitude and Romero had a different view of things.

Yes, this appears to be a big issue. Romero was announcing new games, features, story lines, when they really were just proposals. Then they'd get negative backlash when proposals changed. Supposedly he did this with Ion Storm, too, announcing Daikatana 2 before the first game was even finished.

Surprisingly short, I was hoping at least 2 hours of back-and-forth between them, but it lasted like 30 minutes. Still, a very charming and engaging stream, I really loved hearing the two again after so many years. Carmack in particular doesn't do much stuff related to Doom, so hearing him talk and tell stories about it again was a highlight.

Must admit I was not a fan of the moderating. Not the person himself, but I would have preferred no moderator at all and just the two of them having a casual chat.

That was great! But short :( There's still so much "we respect each other, but we'd never work together again" energy :P
