why people mostly play on ultra violence instead on nightmare?

Recommended Posts

I played Nightmare exclusively for Nightmare November:

MOST WADS ARE NOT BALANCED OR PLAYTESTED FOR NIGHTMARE.

I play Duke 3D on DIG and it has ways to keep the aliens from respawning such as gibbing, using the slimers to eat dead bodies (and live ones really), etc. In other words, there’s ways to keep the enemies from respawning. Doom doesn’t have any good way of doing this that can be utilized throughout the game.

Because the infinite respawn just changes it into a speedrunning game. I like exploring the levels, hunting for secrets etc. Nightmare only allows for one playstyle, and that's speed running.

Without the respawn, it is a great difficulty and the only one I play Doom at. Can't really remember the last time I played normal UV.

Exactly.

On a more abstract level:

Doom is essentially a mix of a "counting game" and a "running game".

On UV-Max particularly you have two counters: monsters and secrets. You have to bring both counters to zero, killing monsters and discovering secrets. (Of course, your key pressing and mouse moving skills are what determine your ability to "count", not your mathematics skills ;-) ) And for many players (including me) "exploring" and "killing", i.e. lowering these counters, is what's part of the fun.

Nightmare turns it basically in a almost pure running game. The exploring and counting aspect may remain on a very basic level (in NM100S you have to lower the secret counter) but in general the maps are not balanced in a way you really have time to enjoy your journey.

E2M6 is the single hardest map out of the first 3 episodes to beat on Nightmare. You typically want to have the plasma gun ahead of time and as many cells as possible saved up, prior entering the level, or you're going to have a miserable time.

Because most people like, you know, fun. But then some people like getting tied up and spanked so... whatever does it for you I guess.

It's been said in here already, but the difficulty spike from UV to N! is an order of magnitude sharper than between the other difficulties.  You go from HNTR to HMP to UV and all you're doing is adding more monsters and altering the amount and layout of resources.  The monsters otherwise behave exactly the same, making the changes somewhat incremental; and even if the mapper went overboard adding new baddies up to UV, the lack of behavior change means it really does just feel like you've leveled up in difficulty.

Nightmare is nothing like that.  It plays almost like a different game, and a particularly mean one that most people aren't masochistic enough to play.  The monsters, and their projectiles, are all on coke and they will never stop coming back.  Archviles, cybers, pain elementals, everything will just keep returning and will be attacking you constantly.  Chaingunners and big spiders are practically instant death because you have no grace period before they unload on you.

Difficulty spike aside, I'm also with @Captain POLAND and @idbeholdME and others that Doom is more fun when you can explore and take things a bit at your own pace, and more satisfying when you have the option of reducing even the largest opposing army of demons to stillness and silence.  Because of the fast monsters and the constant respawns, Nightmare takes both of those things away and makes the game an unrelenting grind from start to finish.

I feel like I'm overexplaining what will be a lot more obvious after you've tried playing in N! for a bit, like tl;dr it's a troll setting that they threw in because id was a bunch of cheeky fuckers back in the day
