bejiitas_wrath Posted January 31 This is using gut bacteria to arrange themselves and make an organic display of computer data. This is showing a screen running Doom. How long until we get brain cells and run Doom on an organic computer that can think for itself? has science gone too far? 3 Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted January 31 I am way too tired and possibly misreading this, but comments seem to suggest this is simulated, not legitimate. Even if this could be done, the picture quality will make you think you're trying to play an Atari 2600 after waking up from being blackout drunk and sustaining a concussion from trying to fight a lamp post. 4 Share this post Link to post
Lucius Wooding Posted January 31 Yeah but it's a tenth of the screen resolution, black and white, and takes 8 hours per frame. Also, the game code isn't being executed using the bacteria, it's being fed in using them as a screen. This has absolutely nothing to do with Doom except that it was chosen as a means of demonstrating the tech. 3 Share this post Link to post
Sneezy McGlassFace Posted January 31 I realise this is a pretty small hill to die on but calling these videos "running doom on [x]" is just insulting. Vast majority of these run Doom somewhere off to the side, and use [x] just to render the screen. Many people work really hard to get the actual code running on Atari ST or 286 or all sorts of devices, and then people come with their pregnancy testers and notepad.exe and what not, and steal the spotlight. I'm not saying it's easy to interface with bacterial cells but they're NOT running Doom. They could "run" Crysis just the same. 13 Share this post Link to post
RataUnderground Posted January 31 Same story again as with the pregnancy test. No, it is not "running Doom". It is using the bacteria to create a grid that displays a png. 0 Share this post Link to post

TheMagicMushroomMan Posted January 31 (edited) By the end of the century, sexual intercourse (look it up) will consist of using your own sperm cells to play DOOM inside your partner's ovaries while a cat's anus executes the game's code. This is nothing but a gimmicky way to get clicks from "nerds" who don't understand that the game isn't actually running on the gut bacteria/pregnancy test/fecal matter, knowing the nerds/totally knowledgeable journalists will inevitably run around spreading The Word of the Miracle in order to bring more clicks to whatever website originally posted the story (or their own). They could use the same gut bacteria to play an ultra-low resolution episode of The Sopranos, and the only difference is that the reaction you'd get from fans of The Sopranos is probably somewhere along the lines of "wow, don't these people ever get laid?". I like DOOM too but stuff like this is about as interesting to me as a hobo trying to sell a piece of toast with the Virgin Mary burned into the bread. If the gut bacteria were being used to display an image of something you (not you personally) didn't have a personal attachment to, you wouldn't care. But if it's DOOM, it's both a meme and an incredible technological milestone that must be brought up 80,000 times in the future as "proof" that DOOM can "run" on anything. This party trick has gotten really old. 11 Share this post Link to post
thiccyosh Posted January 31 Great! Another thing running (if we stretch the definition a little bit) Doom! Can't wait for every gaming news site to not shut up about it for the next two weeks! It's still impressive, it's probably a small achievement in her field and I guess if she couldn't think of a better example she might as well use Doom to demonstrate her cool experiment. So I think it's uncalled for to scold her just because "It's not creative" or "Ackschually it's not running Doom". And she even points out herself it's not actually running Doom, so blame the news sites desperately trying to get cheap clicks and not her. Some of you need to chill this is just an experiment using Doom as an example ffs :P 5 Share this post Link to post

Some of you need to chill this is just an experiment using Doom as an example ffs :P I couldn't watch the video with sound so I didn't realize that it was uploaded by the person who did this experiment. The problem isn't with her, it's the journalists who will report on it while making no distinction between running the game and displaying it. The title of her video still uses the words "running DOOM" but I won't knock her for that since this is her personal project and not a news piece. Her video also shows symptoms of another problem: she shows the pregnancy test footage when talking about DOOM being played on strange devices, which is to be expected, but she also shows "DOOM" being played on a TI-83 calculator when it's merely a game meant to resemble DOOM and has nothing in common with it otherwise. Then, if you go to another video of TI-83 DOOM, the comments are full of people who seem to be under the impression that it's an actual port of the game. 1 Share this post Link to post

Maybe when some of the subtle engineering problems are worked out your dream can become reality. A larger feline like a Puma or Leopard might have the capacity you're looking for. A lion might be a bit overkill, but should have enough space to hold all the ram you can fit for the rest of your life. Just a thought. 2 Share this post Link to post

GibFrag Posted February 4 (edited) This whole “it runs Doom” thing has been exaggerated for many years if you want to get technical about it. The vast majority of examples given are not actually running Doom, but are still impressive nonetheless. Some are just being used as a display, others are running an entirely different game that just shares graphics from Doom. Journalist aren’t going to know the difference, and even if they did, their target audience (which is not us ultra-violent doom nerds) isn’t going to care. They’ll read the headline and run with it regardless. 2 Share this post Link to post

Maybe they wanna make Wolfendoom port :v 1 Share this post Link to post

DankMetal Posted February 6 You know, it could've been cooler to see Bad Apple being displayed with those bacteria things, and it could've grabbed the same attention as if you put the name "Doom" on it, because Bad Apple has the same reputation for being playable on anything. 0 Share this post Link to post
Astar Posted February 6 Ah yes, another “Doom running on X”.... Call me when embryos in the womb can play Doom, that will be friggin' cool! 0 Share this post Link to post
DiceByte Posted February 7 Engineers have gotten Doom running on just about anything with a screen, but the real question is can you BEAT Doom on all this stuff you got Doom running on. I wanna see somebody beat Doom in a calculator. I mean, if people beat Doom on the 3do, surely they can beat it on a pregnancy test. 0 Share this post Link to post
