Bethesda's "Official" addons

Recommended Posts

So just for shit's and giggles I went ahead and downloaded all the wads that Bethesda listed as "Official" but I'm curious, are any of those wads actually official addons or did they just grab a bunch of wads and claim they are official?

For the sake of context I am referring to:

Anomaly Report

Arrival

Back To Saturn ep1

Back To Saturn ep2

Base Ganymede

Deathless

Doom 0

Double Impact

Earthless: Prelude

Harmony

No End In Sight

No Rest For The Living (Confirmed)

The Plutonia Experiment (Confirmed)

REKKR

Revolution

Scientist

Sigil (COnfirmed)

Sigil II (Confirmed)

Syringe

T.N.T: Evilution (Confirmed)

The Trooper's Playground

I know I listed five wads that are already confirmed as official I included them because they are in the "Official" list.

Yes, they were all projects from the community approved by Bethesda to be shared on the official port.

Well, but who approved Bethesda to be in the position to call something "Official?"
Money can't buy everything :-)

I was kind of wondering the same thing considering the only wads on there that are id connected are by T.N.T and Romero himself other than NRFTL.

Yes, they are official addons in that they were officially licensed from their creators so that they could be distributed through the addons system.

Is the complaint here with the terminology, or with modern wads being shown to a wider audience outside of Doomworld, or what?

There is no denying that but outside of that, what exactly makes these wads official? Do they actually expand on the (I use the term loosely) lore of the core game?

The terminology only. I'm all for spreading the DooM gospel to one and all so please don't misunderstand. I'm just curious as to whether they actually expand on the lore or not.

The addons are official because Bethesda reached to the makers of these WADs and asked them if they could be in the game. Nothing more, nothing less.

This all is non-profit and it's a cool way for people who play on consoles to play cool WADs.

Fair enough

They chose fair wads. Some good, some bad. It's sad Boom/MBF stuff isn't allowed because that's where the really fun stuff is.

I think the meaning of the term "official" in the context of a computer game is not appropriate. It's just a scam to make money.
"Official" is a judicial sentence or a cancer diagnosis, but not a bunch of bits that are supposed to be fun to play.
But I have to admit, not being a native speaker maybe I'm wrong or can't really explain what I mean.

Additionally, classic DOOM was in the nineties. Beside all the legal yadayada, the only persons that could approve anything
related to classic doom as 'official' are Romero and Carmack.
Nobody else. Ok, except maybe Donna Jackson. :-)

It's a scam to make money off of a feature that is completely unmonetized? Its official because each wad is officially endorsed and licensed by Bethesda and Id Software.

Not quite sure what exactly makes Sigil and Sigil 2 "confirmed" official, as no one has said they are canon or anything, if we're going by that definition. Romero making them does not immediately make them official, as he hasn't been at Id for decades. Its as official as any of the other wads in the add on section.

I've always saw them as a great way to show some cool WADS like Doom Zero & BTSX to console players, and to put good wads into the spotlight. The Console version was where i first discovered the aforementioned BTSX which is still one of my favorite wads.

Because John Romero is Jesus fucking Christ embodied. Any argument outside of that alone is moot lol.

Wait, I thought the wad authors were given some royalties or something maybe for having the pwad in there, were they not? If not then I thought wrong.

Surely, the fact that they're "Bethesda" add-ons is proof that they're canon now, right? Nevermind that it's really not how canon works, with the exception of Disney completely scrapping the EU when they bought Star Wars of course. Hey, let's just slap this 'seal of quality' on the cover of our wads and call it official because that definitely makes it better than all the hundreds of worthy Boom wads out there that won't be added unless Unity receives some kind of overhaul!

Not really, no. However the wad authors of the officially added-on pwads get commemorative coins for the inclusion of their wads

unless you wanna dig up jim flynn and ty haldermans's graves and get their corpses to sign a document licensing boom to bethesda, then the unity port can't use boom wads

The moderator better close this thread, before it gets too ugly.

True but it's still pretty shitty.
