Sharessa Posted April 13, 2003 My HTML teacher pronounced it 'jiff' and I thought it was strange. 0 Share this post Link to post
Job Posted April 13, 2003 I was always hearing it as "jiff", so I do the same. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted April 13, 2003 "giff" ... since it starts with a g and all. 0 Share this post Link to post
IMJack Posted April 13, 2003 "Giff". I could name a dog that... I think I've heard one person say "jiff." Anyway, the phrase the acronym comes from is a hard 'g'. 0 Share this post Link to post
Little Faith Posted April 13, 2003 Another question that has been bugging me for some time: How is Lüt pronounced? Like "lute"? Like "lit"? Or like "lot"? 0 Share this post Link to post
RjY Posted April 13, 2003 This is from libpng.org, so you could argue against its being definitive, but nevertheless:No detail was too small for consideration in the authors' quest for a near-perfect image format; yea, verily, even the acronym and pronunciation were major topics of discussion. The reason, of course, is the GIF format; some pronounce it with a soft G like giraffe, some with a hard G like gift, and no one really knows what they're talking about. (For the record, the soft G is correct; it is how the author of the format pronounces it.) 0 Share this post Link to post

Bloodshedder Posted April 13, 2003 PNG is actually supposed to be pronounced "ping". As for words starting with a soft G, there are plenty. Gelatin, gem, gene, ginger, giraffe, gyroscope, for example. 0 Share this post Link to post
Ubik Posted April 13, 2003 I certainly don't SEE any "J" in the term "GIF." PHOENETICS UBER ALLES! 0 Share this post Link to post
Ichor Posted April 13, 2003 I call it gif (ground, give, etc.) mainly because .jif (similar to .jpg files I think) files also exist. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted April 13, 2003 "Giff". I never knew there was any other way to pronounce it. as for the png, I pronounced it "Pang", jpg was always "jay-peg". 0 Share this post Link to post
