Anyone remember Minesweeper?

Recommended Posts

I remember playing that on my dad's windows xp computer back when I was a wee lad, and had no fucking idea how to play it, so I just clicked randomly.

I still play it, but I still suck at it.

That's a classic one. I used to play it a lot during PC classes in school. I still like to revisit that game for Nostalgia (it happens rarely though). The funniest part is that no matter how much I replay it, I still suck at it

There is a feature-rich Minesweeper variant created by the guy who also made PixelShips. It used to be a paid Shareware game but the author decided to change it to freeware a few years ago alongside the PixelShips sequel. It's pretty sweet.

In the Win 3.1 days, I never learned how to play Minesweeper, so I'd just play games like Rodent's Revenge and Klotski instead.

Can’t wait for you to find a 7 it’s gonna be a wild time (Yet to meet an 8 without plugging in ludicrous NUTS-level custom settings first)

Here's your mythical 8 (plus a slightly less mythical finger-slip):

Well ok, jesting aside that game looks more like Minesweeper than plays like it, although they're both mini puzzley sort of things, and I remember them both and that they tended to be a thing for a particular sort of bored mood.

Just a stray thought. Years ago, a very good Minesweeper player mentioned that you can save a lot of time by *not* marking the mines (there is no strict need to do so) - remember/recognize where they are and solve around them. This makes the game a lot harder of course, but I imagine that with some practice and a lot of built-up pattern recognition you can keep the mine locations in your head well enough. I have tried it a bit, and quickly got confused. Maybe something more to bear in mind for the "mopping up" part of solving. Edit: or on relatively easy modes, I can handle that, albeit with a lot more early bomb-outs, but quicker times when successful.

Not bothering to mark them may also be rather appealing if you play using a touch screen (rather than a mouse), as needing to do long clicks to mark mines feels annoyingly time-wasting when you are trying to solve quickly, and rushing them has a rather obvious drawback.

BTW, I found a "9" the other day. Of course, there is no number 9 that gets displayed.

Previously I beat 120 mines pretty easily but somehow 121 went off the rails and I might have gone a little insane
